Details: Las Vegas International Pipe Show - The Premiere Show for Pipe Enthusiasts (vegaspipeshow.com) Pipe Question: (From Taylor) Love the show and love the Squire for all of its amazing blends. I'm a big Tolkien nerd, so when I first saw you guys had a Middle Earth series I lost my mind. I mention the ME series because I have started doing some home blending myself to create Southern Star, the third and mostly forgotten of the pipeweed of the South Farthing. My question is, do you have any good tips for a home blender? I note down everything I taste in a notebook, but if you have any other advice I would love to hear it. Warm regards, Taylor Freet Quick Fire Questions: John Coatney Confirmed Pipe SMokers of Fiction & Literature Edition Sherlock Holmes or Gandalf Haunted Bookshop (the book) or Billy Budd (the book) Trumpkin the dwarf or Puddleglum the Marshwiggle (Chronicles of Narnia) Listener Feedback: (From Davey J) hey fellas, hope you both had a good recharge in FL. sounds like you boys needed some much needed bro time. really hope you found it, take care and peace be with you both. (From Dragon Faerie) Super excited to try Rivendell and Second breakfast for the first time! As a female piper, I can't help but feel like I'm in Victorian times!

Pipe Smoking 101: Getting Started with $1K... wait what!? Jul 13, 2022
    Show notes

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people, and two of them are hosting this podcast! Thankfully if there is one thing they know better than most it’s best practices for new pipe smokers. Here we do our best to set you up on your pipe journey right with the spirit of mentorship and community that the Country Squire is renowned for. This week: Getting Started with $1,000!? Pipe Question: (From Joshua) Hey John David. Was wondering if you already haven’t if you could explain semois pipe tobacco. Yeah have seen it several times and am intrigued. Joshua Warwick - Twin Falls, Idaho QFQ: (From Pastor Joda) So, my brothers, I present to you “Will it Pipe Tobacco?” The concept is simple, I present a list of flavor profiles and you debate whether or not it would fly as a tobacco blend. It’s not necessarily you dump proposed flavor on the tobacco, though that may be the “case(ing)”. But if there is a way to deliver the flavor with some other form of Tobacco Alchemy, then that is acceptable as well. I realize you may find this idea quite lame and place it directly in the trash folder, if so, no problemo. Will it pipe tobacco? • Maple and applewood smoked bacon • Fireball Candy • Juniper forward Gin • Muscadine • Basil • Peanut butter and jelly Listener Feedback: (From David) Greetings and Salutations JD and Beau! I am a relatively new listener, having discovered your podcast barely a month ago, while searching the google for information on corn cob pipe customization. I have been devouring your podcast episodes exclusively during my workday, It wasn’t until listening to an episode from just prior to New Years Eve, and you mentioned the new year being 2017 that I realized that I was listening to a 5+ year old episodes…(facepalm). I now listen to the most current episode that’s been released and then go back and continue catching up. I love the way you two interact with other and avoid “current events in the news”. It’s also refreshing that your podcast is not scrubbed of any reference of religion or being religious. It’s OK to love Jesus. I just listened to the episode discussing the history of the pipe cleaner. The nerd in me enjoyed it much more than I should have. I’ll check out the “How It’s Made” you mentioned being on YouTube this evening. I look forward to being able to support the show financially, but until then I’ll continue to enjoy it like those free pipe cleaners in your shop!

Half Bowl Histories: Calico Jack Jul 06, 2022
    Show notes

You might know him by the names John Rackham, Jack Rackham, or simply Calico Jack, a pipe smoking pirate of history that I present to you as the world's first Millennial Pirate. Let me explain... Country Squire Radio's 'Half Bowl Histories' series takes a look into the history, lore, and legacy of individuals, places, and events of interest that helped shape the world we know today for good and for ill. Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we’ve covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. Pipe Question - (From E) Hi! I love listening to your podcast, discovered it recently and it has been great. I had a question about blends like Early Morning pipe. I like this blend, but ultimately feel it would be better without the latakia. I don't mind a bit here and there, but I'm not a massive fan of latakia. I read somewhere that the blend used to be done without the latakia...by Dunhill, sometime a while ago. I don't know why they changed it, but it's left me craving the nice sweet, smooth flavors without that bit of smokiness. Would you be able to point me in the direction of something like E.M.P without L? Or failing that, if I was to try and mix it myself, what type of Virginia would I need with oriental leaf? Keep up the amazing work, love this resource. E Listener Feedback - (From Scott McCrate) I loved the Jacques Cousteau episode, I was really hooked on his television show as a kid. I have to say you missed one of the best jokes and clues in The Life Aquatic, Cousteau's vessel was the Calypso, in Life Aquatic it was the Belafonte. Harry Belafonte was a famous Calypso singer! I love The Life Aquatic! (From Watson) Beau and Jon David, I want you to know how much I enjoy the show and your dynamic as co-hosts. I think you two could talk about almost anything and it would be listenable based solely on your personalities. As a heavily accented southerner, I also appreciate listening to kindred voices speaking with so much knowledge on a subject. The reason I am contacting you is to recommend someone for the segment formerly known as "Hero of the Bowl." One of the biggest champions of the briar for me has always been Aldo Leopold. He is considered the father of wildlife ecology and was an accomplished writer. He was often photographed with a pipe and they were a constant companion of his while working in the field. Among his many accomplishments is the conceptualization of a "land ethic" which calls for ethical and sustainable use of natural resources. His most popular book, A Sand County Almanac, is a classic and among the first texts those of us studying Wildlife and Conservation read in college. It is certainly worth spending some time reading this book outdoors with a nice billiard early in the morning...quite possibly the very situation in which it was written. I recommend it as a text that many of your listeners may find interesting and I think they would appreciate learning more about Aldo Leopold himself. Thank you for so many great hours of content. You two (and Brian over at Pipes Magazine Radio Show) have unknowingly spent many hours on the road with me as I commute. My car's interior has assumed the scent of your Cherokee blend. Keep up the solid work on all fronts.... - Cheers, Watson

From The Library: The Miracle of Mindfulness Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

The Library or Study has long been the haven of the contemplative pipe smoker. In our ‘From The Library’ series, we take a look into the musings, writings, poetry, and more that pique our interest and consider the mind of the author and how we can, or perhaps can’t, relate from our own experience. This week: “The Miracle of Mindfulness” by Thich Nhat Hanh Pipe Question: (From MarkVV) Captain Jorvik and Jon David, Ahoy, fellas! I have a query for both of you! So often Beau is left high and dry on this so I wanted to ask something of him to be inclusive! Jon David. Do different types of tobacco leaf, for instance, bright leaf and red Virginias, age differently or faster than others? Or is it purely a question of sugar content in the leaf? Or both? Or something else? And Beau. If you really were Captain Jorvik of the Seven Seas, what tobacco would you envision your pirate-self smoking? It can be period appropriate or modern, like Country Squire Treasure Island. As always, I hope you both are well, as well as your dear families. Hope to cross paths soon. Your friend, Mark VV Listener Feedback: (From Chables) Beau! Jon David! Hope yall are well! Hope to get to see yall at some point soon what with covid dying down and such. I wanted to say how tickled i was to hear my name in the St Ives drawing. Not gonna lie, i was having a rough end to a rough year, but that really made my day that day and put a smile on my face like yall do so often.

Tobacco Talk: Amphora Original and 4th Generation Morning Blend Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

What would a pipe tobacco podcast be without a good deal of pipe tobacco reviews? Loose leaf, tin, and even the hard to find stuff will all find their way into our pipes and into our heads as we review the entirety of each pipe tobacco from the packaging, marketing, tin note, texture, flavor, and smoke. This week it's time for Mac Baren's Amphora Original Blend & Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation Morning Blend Pipe Question - (From J.A.Grff) Hey Beau and JD! Being a fan of both pipes and cigars I've been following the stillwell star line of cigars that are premium cigars blended with pipe tobacco that is a colab between Steve Saka and Jeremy Reeves(Cornell and diel). Wondering if you guys have any experience with these cigars, im real curious about them because of the collaboration with Cornell and Diehl. QFQ - Just one question: Aquaman Controls Fishlife, The Purpleman Speaks and anyone will do what he says. Let’s combine these powers: (Surprise Question for JD eobardces) Listener Feedback - (From Aaron) Hey Guys, Just wanted to say that I really enjoy listening to your Podcast. I am a sales rep for a liquor and wine distribution company and I drive a lot and stumbled upon your podcast a few years ago and it didn’t take me long to catch up on all of the episodes. I don’t smoke my pipe(s) very often but have a very respectable pipe stand with an array of pipes of different shapes and I try to sit down with a pipe a couple times a month (weather permitting) Anyways, I just wanted to reach out and say hello from Northern Minnesota. I am really looking forward to your new episodes in 2022, especially all of your new series that you will be adding. Keep up the great work guys and feel free to reach out any time to talk pipes, tobacco, life or good quality liquor (our company represents Punchers Chance whiskey and I laughed the entire episode you guys reviewed it)

Father To Father: Legacy Jun 08, 2022
    Show notes

Step into the Country Squire Tobacconist on any given day and you’re likely to find a group of diverse men of all ages sharing their lives, triumphs, and troubles, over a bowl of quality pipe tobacco. In our Father To Father series, we try to capture the realness of conversation you find at your local pipe shop as we share our experience navigating fatherhood as two dads of young kids. Pipe Question - (From Kirk) Hey guys I'm a long time listener. Been pipe smoking for roughly 13 years and I started listening I think on your 3rd or 4th episode years ago. My question is, is there a certain temp where pipes should be stored? I have a large rack in my living room that is full and I'm looking at getting a couple more to store the pipes I don't smoke as often and will have to keep it in my basement, which is unfinished and cold in the winter and muggy in the summer. Just curious if anything would happen to my pipes that are stored there. Always enjoy your show. Kirk QFQ - (From Pastor Joda) So here’s a twist for you. I’m thinking of the way you have relaunched some things this year, what about a deep thoughts version of QFQ? What advice would you give to your 23 year old self? Listener Feedback - (From Caleb of the OFF podcast) Hey Beau! The most recent Father to Father episode came out on my daughter's 10th birthday. Waking up this morning and reflecting on the day I became a father was only enhanced by hearing your memories as well. I feel like I shared a special day with you guys! (From John) Gentlemen, I am, in fact, one of the listeners you've mentioned recently - I've been working to catch up on older episodes (selectively), and only in the last few days been listening to the most recent episodes as well. I want to thank you for the work you're doing, as I've been enjoying it immensely. The recent Father to Father episode was outstanding. Thank you for being willing to put yourselves out there. I know that it encouraged and edified me, and I can't be the only one. As a 40 year-old father of four young boys (7, 6, 4, and 2), I relate to much of what you discussed. Please, please keep it up. I'll try not to go overlong in telling about how I got into pipe smoking (and by all means, use what you like, if any, and cut what you like), but I bought my first pipe (a Szabo) in Budapest, Hungary, when I was on temporary duty as a Soldier and Officer in the U.S. Army (Veterinary Corps). I was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, and began collecting pipes at that time (in 2007). However, over time the pipes ended up in a box in the closet, and when we moved to Ethiopia in 2019 as members of Christian Veterinary Mission, the pipes stayed in storage here in the States. However, when we'd been in Ethiopia for about a month, I was invited into a theological social media group in which most of the guys smoked pipes, and I deeply regretted not bringing any pipes or tobacco with me. Then, in 2020, we had to leave Ethiopia due to COVID, and have been unable to return due to a subsequent civil war. I've taken a temporary research position at a veterinary school here in the States, and have been able to appreciate smoking a pipe again. Needless to say, if and when we're able to return to Ethiopia in the near future (God willing), I'll be taking as much pipe smoking materiel as my wife allows. One final note - a couple weeks back I was doing a much needed tobacco inventory, and I realized that, after Cornell & Diehl and Ken Byron Ventures, I have significantly more Country Squire tobacco than any other blender. You guys have great stuff across the board, but Cowboy Coffee is my go to smoke. My order of Whale Song is arriving today, and I can't wait. Once again: Keep up the great work! Peace,

    Top 3 Virginia Tobaccos May 25, 2022
    Show notes

Our take on the internet's most overused clickbait tool. Each episode of the Top 3 series, we will count down our Top 3 favorite… well… just about anything. So far we have covered Tin Art, Pipe Carvers To Watch, Breakfast Blends, and more! Don’t be surprised if Coffees, Whiskeys, and a few other beloved items find their way into this series as well. This week: Top 3 Virginia Tobaccos Pipe Question: Mr JD, I’ve been looking at a Missouri Meerschaum General. Since it has a deeper bowl, can I just stuff more tobacco in and smoke longer, or does the depth and larger amount of tobacco cause the bottom leaf to soak up more moisture, become soggier and counterproductive to a long smoke? Do you have any thoughts on straight vs bent for a longer, dryer smoke? On average, with my Peterson straight Bulldog, I’ll smoke Country Squire Seersucker (delicious by the way) about 45min till it goes out. Also, I live in West Texas and the wind regularly sustains 20+mph, gusting into 40+, and I work outside. Is that expecting too much of a windcap to be effective or you think it’ll work? Seriously, thanks for being my virtual tobacconist since there’s NO pipe shop within 6 hours to me. Really excited for the new shows! Here’s to another year of pipe smoking! - Derek J. QFQ - Collectables Edition Did/do you collect cards, if so what kind? Did/do you collect toys, if so what kind? Did/do you collect comics, if so what kind? Did/do you collect movies/records/etc, if so what kind? If you answered no to all of these, is there anything besides pipes that you collect? Listener Feedback: (From Joel) Allo boys! Wanted to let you know how much your show has contributed to my enjoyment of smoking my pipes! The two biggest take-aways - the two things that have completely changed my enjoyment of pipes and pipe tobacco for the better are: 1) Tamp dat ash! - I always had trouble either keeping my pipe lit OR packing it too tightly. Now, because of your show, I have a Czech tool as part of my EDC - I can tamp and pick as needed to get the proper burn at all times! Thank you! 2)Pipe cleaner after every bowl - this has been a game changer! I used to have to deep-clean my pipes after just a few bowls - bristled pipe cleaners and whisky to really scrub the gunk out! Even had to do the salt method a couple of times! This had the effect of me not wanting to smoke, because I didn’t want to clean! …….Now, again - because of your show, I run a pipe cleaner through the stem and around the inside of the bowl after every smoke, and I just gotta say - this has made ALL the difference in the world!!! Armed with my tamp and pipe cleaner, I fear no pipe nor tobacco! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Fantastic show - as ever!
