Tobacoo Talk: Crumble Kake Barrel Aged No. 4 & C&D- Morning Light Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

What would a pipe tobacco podcast be without a good deal of pipe tobacco reviews? Loose leaf, tin, and even the hard to find stuff will all find their way into our pipes and into our heads as we review the entirety of each pipe tobacco from the packaging, marketing, tin note, texture, flavor, and smoke. This week: Crumble Kake Barrel Aged No. 4 & C&D- Morning Light Pipe Question: (From Frank) Got a show question for you. If you could turn back time… if you could find a way…. What episode/topic would you ‘take back’. That is to say, is there any episode you wish you could revisit due to feeling that you either didn’t do the topic justice or were just plain wrong about something? Maybe nothing! Afterall you guys are the best! But if you could…. What would it be? - Frank Quick Fire Questions: N/A Listener Feedback: (From the other pipe smoking Steve) Hello JD and Bo, I found the country squire store/and podcast about 6 months ago. I am slowly working my way through the country squire blends and have enjoyed them all. The 50th anniversary blend being my favorite so far. I have really enjoyed and learned A LOT from the podcast. Its interesting that my pipe journey sounds a lot like others I've heard on the show. I bought my first basket pipe about twenty years ago and have put it down and picked it back up several times over the years. It was my NEED to slow my mind down during meditation and prayer that brought me back to the pipe this last time. It was during a frustrating evening trying to connect with God on my back porch that the idea of 'the pipe' miraculously popped into my mind. I dont even know why because up to that point everytime I tried smoking it, it just ended in searing tung burn that lasted days. I give God the credit for turning me back to the pipe and slowing my mind down so I could start having some real conversations with him or sit in meditation and try to hear what he is trying to tell me. Also during this time I have of course been catching up on country squire radio. I started with the 2015 episodes and just now on 4-29-22 got caught up to the current one in Miami. You guys feel like family. It sounds like you are intentionally trying to keep that vibe while introducing new ideas for shows, after all one must change in order to grow. Excellent idea I hope you can do it...so far I love all of the ideas yall are putting on air. Be careful you dont let the show grow too big, you will never be able to downsize it. It will just start to implode on itself if you do lose the small town Jackson feel. FYI...I live in Nashville now but I am from just down the interstate from you guys, West Monroe Louisiana. There is nothing wrong with small town USA. A lot of days I wish I could be back there. Anyway I have a problem I need help with. For the past six months I've been listening to about a show a day, sometimes two. Mostly on the drive home in the evenings I can listen to a whole show and it makes me forget about the long drive. So I'm gonna need yall to crank out 1 show everyday now. As far as I know this is the only podcast in existence and it checks all the boxes for me! LOL!!! Just kidding of course but it will be difficult waiting a week to hear from you guys again. Thanks for what you do, love yall. I will hopefully be able to make the pilgrimage one day soon. God bless, - The other pipe smoking Steve

Squire Select: Boodles Rhubarb Strawberry Gin Sep 21, 2022
    Show notes

We are mixing it up again this week! In the classic style of Squire Select we are pairing a spirit (Boodles Rhubarb Strawberry Gin) with some quality pipe tobacco, but wait, as they say...there's more! We then use that same spirit to create a cocktail and see how it changes the pairing selection. Pipe Question: (from Alex) About Nicotine Content: I always loved aromatics many because My girlfriend and kids love the smell but i've always wanted to smoke something stronger I dabbled into some darker Periques and BURLEYS but found the nicotine kick was too strong Other blends like Old Joe Krantz Old Dark Fired and Irish Flake i heard are very strong too What can i mix with them to lower the nicotine as i want to smoke them I love my Carter Hall Would that tone them down a bit. Quick Fire Questions: You’ve got 1 magical hour. 1 magical hour to be anywhere in the world with 1 hours worth of music, 1 hours worth of pipe tobacco, 1 beverage and 1 pipe. Listener Feedback: (From Jeremy) Just got a chance to listen to latest episode on Calico Jack. Loved it. Listened to it on my way home from a job site and Friday nights are family movie nights in the Dukes household. The boys chose a Netflix animated movie called The Sea Beast. It’s a lot of swashbuckling fun in the vein of Moby Dick, and I couldn’t help but think about you and your love for all things pirates. . Not sure what your kids are into but it’s worth the watch. Hope all is well!

Pipe Smoking 101: Is It Necessary to Have a Dedicated Pipe? Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people, and two of them are hosting this podcast! Thankfully if there is one thing they know better than most it’s best practices for new pipe smokers. Here we do our best to set you up on your pipe journey right with the spirit of mentorship and community that the Country Squire is renowned for. This week: Is It Necessary to Have a Dedicated Pipe? Pipe Question: (From Charles Nygaard) Vauen 9mm filters are blue on one end. Does it matter which way you put them in your pipe? Are they directional? I have not been able to find any info anywhere. But I have found no difference either way.Keep up the great work Quick Fire Questions: From Joda * Media Edition * Cassette or Vinyl * Vinyl or CD * CD or Digital Songs(iTunes, MP3, WAV, AAC, etc) * Digital or Streaming (Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, etc) * Podcast or radio Listener Feedback: (From John Coatney) I wanted to encourage you guys regarding the several new series you’ve recently started - especially the Father to Father series. As a father of four young boys (ages 7, 6, 4, and 2), I thought that in the most recent episode you guys provided an edifying, thought-provoking, and (most appreciated) vulnerable conversation that went beyond anything I’ve heard on CSR to date - and, given that you guys have provided a consistently high quality product, that’s saying something. I’m really looking forward to future Father to Father episodes. God bless you guys. Keep up the great work! Peace, John

Formerly ‘Heroes of the Bowl’, The Half Bowl Histories series takes a look into the history, lore, and legacy of individuals, places, and events of interest that helped shape the world we know today for good and for ill. Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we’ve covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. This week: Merian C. Cooper Quick Fire Questions: From Jeremy 9)Short (ie bulldog), or Medium (ie Bings/Von Erck) or Long (ie churchwarden or semi-warden) 10)Thick shank or pencil shank 11)Shank garnish (ie brass, silver, gold, bamboo, acrylic) or plain. 13)Nomenclature proudly displayed or cleverly hidden Listener Feedback: (From dsharader87) Hey I’m a fan of the podcast. I listen to it weekly. With Jon David & Beau’s Legends of the pipe series or whatever name they change it to I have a candidate they may be interested in. Shelby Foote is a renowned author who I think is from Mississippi. He wrote the popular civil war a narrative and was on ken burns the civil war documentary form the 90s’s. He was always smoking a pipe. (From James) I would like to suggest Charles nelson Reilly for a pipe smoker episode. He was an actor/comedian and was on Match Game for many years and was often smoking his pipe during the show. (From David LaMontaine) I’m really enjoying your podcast on pirates. Maybe think about doing one on legendary marine general and pipe smoke Lewis “Chesty” Puller.

I’m enjoying the new things you’ve been doing. You always keep it interesting. Regarding Squire Select. Or Tobacco reviews Not sure where this idea would fall. I’m sure many here, also enjoy cigars. So John David. After that wonderful early Sunday dinner. You sit down with a bowl full of your favorite Virginia. Or whatever for example. Maybe it’s a Latakia. A few hours later, your ready for your favorite brown water and a cigar. You still remember that wonderful Virginia from earlier. So what cigar should you follow it with? Or vice versa. With pipe tobacco to follow that afternoon cigar? Quick Fire Questions: (From Jeremy) Hey Beau and Jon David, For me, there’s nothing quite like finding that “perfect” new pipe. Whether it’s the 1st, 4th, or 40th, I deliberate and choose each one specifically for one reason or another. Imagine yourself standing before a massive never ending wall of pipes. Each section moves and changes based on your preferences. (Matrix style) How do you choose? Here are some quick fire pipe questions that I go through each time I’m looking for that new pipe: 1) Artisan or manufactured 2) Name brand or “I’m feelin’ lucky!” 3)Smooth or rusticated/blasted 4)Dark color finish or light color finis Listener Feedback: (From Alex Mirzoeff) Jon David & Beau Its my pleasure to be a part of Country Squire Radio pipecast as a Patreon Club Pipesz Member on the Pilgrim Level. From The Library: Second Wave Tweed Aug 10, 2022

The Library or Study has long been the haven of the contemplative pipe smoker. In our ‘From The Library’ series, we take a look into the musings, writings, poetry, and more that pique our interest and consider the mind of the author and how we can, or perhaps can’t, relate from our own experience. This week:" Second Wave Tweed" From The Lamp Join us in Vegas for our CSR Live From LVG! - Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 21 – 23, 2022 | 5:00 pm to 7:oo pm Country Squire Radio – Jon David Cole & Beau York - Saturday, October 22nd! Details: Las Vegas International Pipe Show - The Premiere Show for Pipe Enthusiasts (vegaspipeshow.com) Pipe Question: (From Jack Roady) Howdy, Beau and Jon David! I need your recommendations, please. Thanks to the magic of DNA testing, I recently learned that I am 51% Scot -- which came as a complete suprise. I now find myself wanting to fully explore my heritage, and the journey will of course require an appropriate pipe and tobacco of Scottish descent. Would you be so kind as to steer me in the right direction? I'm looking for both pipe recommendations (I currently enjoy the Bing's Favorite and any bent bulldog design) and tobacco recommendations (preferably non-aromatics). Thanks so much for your help -- looking forward to discovering new favorites! Quick Fire Questions: From Jeremy 5)Straight or bent 6)Acrylic or vulcanite/ebonite stem 7)Large bowl or small bowl 8)Symmetrical or Asymmetrical design Listener Feedback: (From Nick Valdez) Hey fellas! I hope everyone is well. Listening to the recent “Miami Mailbag” episode & I wanted to point out something: you guys had this feeling that your being in Miami is more of a detour; however, Miami (aka North Cuba) might be (have been) a great place for you all to involve some topics relating to cigars - particularly Cuban cigars. As ambassadors of the tobacco leaf, you both are in a position to bring these types topics to the table, especially in a city like Miami. Cubaño people have a rich history & culture relating to the tobacco leaf industry. I feel you may have missed an opportunity to visit/explore some of those references. Regardless, your show is always great. You guys are amazing & please keep up the excellent work/product. - Nick

Pipe Question: (From Dave Allen) Greetings Beau and Jon David, I have been out of the tobacco buying game for a while, and while reviewing my cellar I have found that more than half of my stock is of the discontinued variety. While I have a few favorites that I can still restock, I am in need of some new favorites. Can you guys recommend some good blends for the hobbyist who hasn't had the means to buy tobacco for a while now? Thanks for the help and the shows that help get me through the work day. Had to contact you. I love learning art history from Beau! It was fun! Actually, turns out that Monet was a foodie, too! His lunches were well known and attended. Only downer was that everyone had to leave after lunch at a specified time so they didn’t interfere with his work! Good episode! Thanks, Randy Westbrook (From Charlie Young) Hey ya’ll, Enjoying the show! Regarding JD’s story about Magic cards I just wanted to pile on… When I was about 12 years old I somehow talked my dad into buying me a starter deck of Magic cards. Upon getting home my mom wanted to take a look at them and long story short she ended up making me cut each of them in half and throw them in the trash. Icing on the cake was that saga was the basis for her Sunday school lesson the following Sunday I’ll never think of Magic cards without that memory -Charlie Young, North Carolina

Details: Las Vegas International Pipe Show - The Premiere Show for Pipe Enthusiasts (vegaspipeshow.com) Pipe Question: (From Jeremy Dukes) Hey Beau and Jon David, Erin and I went out to do a trip in the Bourbon Trail last week for my birthday. I’d never been and I cannot praise it enough. All the tours we took were exquisite and informational. Plus, the tastings were amazing. Buffalo Trace (and more specifically Eagle Rare) is my favorite distiller and blend, and we were fortunate enough to tour their facilities. If you’ve never been, you must put it on your bucket list. Worth every hour of my trip many times over. My question though is this: during the tastings they gave us a small piece of chocolate for a palate cleanser, but our guide actually got us to take a bite of the chocolate and then a swig of Buffalo Trace. It was like I’d never tasted Buffalo Trace before! It enhanced so many flavors of the whiskey that I’d never recognized prior. So…the question…..would a tobacco blend with notes of chocolate (let’s say Polar Express) have a like affect on my palate when I drink a glass of whiskey? Hope you both are well and enjoying your “Lunting America Tour”. Best wishes from my family to yours. -jeremy Quick Fire Questions: John Coatney Confirmed Pipe SMokers of Fiction & Literature Edition Henry Mitchell (the dad) or George Wilson (the neighbor) (Dennis the Menace) The Wind in the Willows or Curious George Tony Stark or Professor X Meriadoc Brandybuck or Peregrin Took Listener Feedback: (From Eric Karloski in GR) Beau?
