    JENNIFER ROBERTS Nov 06, 2020
    Show notes

Host Celeste Rains-Turk speaks with Jennifer Roberts, wife, mother, full-time school district principal, and lifetime athlete who just turned pro at North Americans! Celeste begins by asking Jennifer what rituals she has immediately before her heel hits the stage. Jennifer says she gives herself reminders of what she's been working on with her posing and she gives herself a physical cue to help ground her and keep her arm relaxed. She used to remind herself to "Own the stage". This year she has focused on transforming nervous energy by saying "It's showtime." Jennifer worked hard on the energy she brings to the stage. Because she got to a point with her posing this year where she moved beyond making corrections, she could focus on doing the things that make her stand out. Eight days before the show, her cousin passed away. Jennifer explained how she wanted to honor him some way during the show and how she thought about her grandfather calling her a ray of sunshine that lights up the room. Celeste talks about not posing as someone else, but as you. Ask yourself, what energy do you bring to the stage? Celeste asks Jennifer about the unconventional set up of this year's North Americans and competing in a tent. Jennifer says she enjoyed it even without an audience, because it allowed her to focus on the judges. She had no problems with the stage and the organizers did a great job. Jennifer started in natural shows in Canada, though the IFBB was always in her mind. She did local shows to keep fit and competed back in 2000, before bikini was a division. She came second in her first competition but realized she was doing it because of deep-seated insecurities. This led her down a personal development path, away from fitness. This contributed to who she is today. Jennifer talks about when she first met her husband, he asked her if she ever read any books for fun instead of all serious, non-fiction books. She tells the story about how he helped her see her beauty, and that was her pivotal movement. Celeste relates by explaining if you aren't willing to look in the mirror and change something, nothing will change. You have to do the hard thing. Currently, Jennifer has a much healthier body image, even though she says it's not perfect. She does shows to stay healthy and because she loves them, instead of trying to attain a certain body. She still has moments, but she doesn't go to a dark place anymore. Recognizing our growth shows us that we can continue to heal. Celeste asks Jennifer what she would say to people who think they are too old to reach certain goals. Jennifer says it's never too late to work on yourself or do a show. She talks about her young family and demanding job, and how you have to recognize your priorities to reach your goals. Jennifer wakes at 5 am to stretch and practice posing. Then she completes her workout and is done just after 7 am when her family is waking up. Jennifer says she does sometimes feel overwhelmed but acknowledges that you just have to fit in things where you can. At one point, she thought she had a good family balance, but her husband explained how she isn't always mentally present for her family. Jennifer says she didn't realize how much it was affecting the family and focused on creating quality time for her family this year. In order to do this, Jennifer preps her food for weeks at a time. When her family gets home, she stops what she's doing and is present for them. Celeste asks about Jennifer's demanding job as a principal. Jennifer explains how she has to travel quite a bit for her job and that she never cheats on her prep. Being super organized allows her to maintain her schedule. She just makes it work. Even on a trip to France last summer, she stayed on track 100 percent. There's nothing you can't do if you want it badly enough. During an improvement season, Jennifer still works hard but is less rigid with her schedule to let her relax. This allows her to go full out during prep. When choosing shows, Jennifer used to consider location, but as she improved and moved up, she realized the IFBB was something she could reach. She started to focus on shows that would allow her to qualify for the Vancouver Pro/Am and then North Americans. She took a long improvement season after the 2019 North Americans to focus on 2020 North Americans and earning her Pro Card. Jennifer talks about how COVID changes her prep with the uncertainty of it the show would even happen. Jennifer took many virtual workshops to improve her posing and started to focus on flexibility to help her achieve proper poses. Once she got in the daily habit of stretching and posing, she had a mindset shift of thinking it was hard for her to pose. Celeste asks Jennifer to speak to what keeps her going through this difficult prep. Jennifer thrives on prep and loves knowing what she has to do and just doing it. She wouldn't want to have regrets if she strayed from her plan and then missed bringing her best to the show. Jennifer focused on her upper body and her glutes based on feedback from the judges. Jennifer loves mountain biking but saves it for improvement season and then switches to road cycling and hiking for prep. Jennifer sees bodybuilding as lifetime fitness. Even when she's done competing, she will keep working out. She does her second workout with her son and wants to be a role model and stay healthy. She wants to keep healthy and stay active for life. She had the goal of getting her pro card before she turned 50, and she did it! Jennifer's husband is a bug support for her. They check in with each other regarding their workouts, keeping communication open to make sure everyone's needs are being met. They work as a great team, even tackling meal prep together. Everyone in the family will eat the same foods. While eating the same foods, each family member still has autonomy in their food choices. Her husband and son don't weigh their food like she does, but they still make conscious food choices. Jennifer's son is also very supportive of her. He helps keep her on track and even critiques her posing. Jennifer loves that her son is involved and they both treat bodybuilding as a sport that requires hard work. Celeste asks Jennifer about a special tradition she has with her family post show. They share wine and charcuterie to honor their family Friday nights. Another tradition they honor daily is sitting together and talking about their day with no distractions. Jennifer talks about the shift that started to happen before she was even a pro. Because she was visualizing being a pro and creating positive energy around her goal, she felt like a pro before she even was one. She believes this focus and mindset helped her achieve her goal. Soon she will start visualizing her next goal. She also sets goals with her family and sets them on a vision board to help keep track of them. Celeste asks Jennifer to offer advice for new competitors and aspiring pros. Jennifer advises aspiring pros to look at the energy they are bringing to their routine. Always practice with your best energy. To new competitors, Jennifer urges them to go to a show and see what it's like as well as evaluate their motives as to why they want to do a show. Trust the process. To both, she encourages family time. Lauren shares what she learned in terms of what the judges were looking for on the pro level, how that differed from the amateurs, and what training and nutrition changes she made to fit those criteria. After talking about the critiques and feedback she received, Lauren emphasizes the importance of competitors creating a relationship with the judges, especially if one wishes to be a true student of the sport. Celeste then goes over the transformations that Lauren made with her physique, overall look, and presentation based on the feedback she received from the judges. Lauren then talks about her feelings associated with the critiques she received about her physique being too big or too muscular for the bikini division after working so hard to bring a new and improved package to the stage. Celeste then asks Lauren about her coaching switch, what inspired the change, and the new approach they took with her training and nutrition to bring the look the judges were looking for. By mentioning the changes in her training, Celeste and Lauren go on to discuss the various coaching methods and approaches to cardio during prep. Next, Celeste touches on Lauren's approach to her nutrition and asks Laure if she prefers to track macros or take an intuitive approach. Circling back to a topic Lauren wanted to elaborate on, the women discuss all things judging, specifically the differences between what is being rewarded at the amateur level and then what is expected for the pros. Lauren touches on how as much as she loved training heavy, she didn't need to go quite as "beast mode" as she did for so long and how the judges do not always reward the girl that shows up the most lean or "shredded." Lauren also shares that at the pro level, the judges tend to focus more on the minor details including posing and overall presentation. The two women discuss more in detail the importance of posing itself and Lauren shares what she felt has made the biggest impact on the improvements she's made on her posing routine. After discussing judging criteria, Celeste asks Lauren about her feelings around getting sick and asks Lauren to share if she felt any grief while watching her physique change because of the inability to train due to being sick. Lauren reflects on the feelings and emotional waves she has experienced during this time and what she will be focused on moving forward. As a result of this reflection, Celeste asks if Lauren has had any breakthroughs, whether about herself or about life, during this time. During this discussion, Celeste and Lauren talk about expectations athletes set for themselves and also the healthy, real and raw feelings or reactions they experience around competing and placings, both positive and negative. Next, Lauren and Celeste both reflect on how they feel this year has been a blessing in the sense of learning to trust life's timing when striving to achieve personal goals. They also touch on how this relates in the competition space and how girls tend to have a scarcity mindset around sticking to the timeline they set for themselves when it comes to achieving specific competition goals. Celeste opens up and shares valuable insight about the importance of the journey, self growth, and personal lessons that one learns through a competition prep. Both women also share the importance of competing for the love of the sport and the desire to truly better oneself instead of competing for the external validation they receive from others. After sharing some valuable insights Celeste switches subjects and asks Lauren about the friendships she's made backstage and the difference in the dynamic amongst competitors between the NPC and IFBB levels. Lauren then opens up and shares if there was anything she wishes she would have known before competing in her first pro show and season. Lastly, to conclude the episode Lauren shares how others can reach out and connect with her. Celeste gets Elysa to share what things athletes can do to make tanners' lives easier and make a better show day experience. Show notes

In this "comeback episode" Celeste sits down and talks with the "Brownie Boss" herself, creator of Bambody Nutrition, Stefanie Antorcha! Celeste and Stefanie waste no time and kick off the episode addressing the recent allegations that were made against Bambody by other individuals in the industry. Stefanie opens up and shares more about what actually happened, how the situation arose, and how she herself found out about these allegations and accusations. She starts from the beginning and shares the challenges she and her business were already facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and where she was when she initially found out what had been happening on social media. Celeste then asks Stefanie about her initial feelings and reactions to the accusations that were being made against Bambody and their products. While explaining the situation, Stefanie shares her passion for her business and its customers, and how she feels they have become a family. She expresses the gratitude she felt for deciding to sit down with her team and finding the most professional manner to address the situation instead of immediately firing back to accusations via social media. Stefanie expresses that she wanted to really connect with and squash doubts from customers and people who truly care and support the company instead of giving attention to the internet trolls. Next, Celeste asks Stefanie if there are any details she wishes customers could have known about the complexities of the situation that attributed to why she couldn't address the situation right away. Stefanie shares sympathy for her customers initial feelings, then explains in detail how they went about finding the lab and started the process of getting samples tested to have their own facts and results. She explains the mix up with the postal service, the delay in delivering the packages containing their samples, and the toll that took on getting the lab results in a timely and efficient manner. Then, Stefanie explains that even upon obtaining the lab results she could not immediately share the results with customers. She goes on to explain the intricacies and details of the results and how one would go about deciphering the numbers and percentages reflected, and why that took so much time for her to be able to properly interpret and communicate with customers. She also emphasizes the importance of being fully transparent with Bambody customers and her passion to always handle things the right way, comparing that to her feelings and values being a product consumer herself. Celeste highlights Stefanie's passion and dedication she has for always providing customers with the best product and the most information possible, without even being required to. Celeste also touches on how her and other loyal customers questioned the claims against Bambody as they have been able to incorporate the treats into their daily nutrition plans and still achieve their goals. Celeste also asks Stefanie to touch on the macro content and nutrition labels Bambody does provide customers and how it varies from the typical baked good or treat you find on grocery store shelves. Transitioning from the process of and how Stefanie addressed the issue of the allegations made against Bambody, her and Celeste talk about the expanding product line and the changes Stefanie is making moving forward. Stefanie then breaks down the differences between the new lines; the Elite line, Guiltless Pleasure line, and the Indulgent line. Next, Celeste and Stefanie talk about the new exciting holiday treats that will be releasing soon as the fall season is in full swing. After talking fun holiday releases Celeste asks if Stefanie ever gets creative at home and creates Bam treats outside of her official "Bambody kitchen." Celeste also asks Stefanie if there are any Bambody treats that her friends and family love, yet she isn't over the moon about. Stefanie shares a brief history of the evolution of Bambody and how she first started experimenting with macro friendly treats as she wanted something that would satisfy her sweet tooth yet keep her on track for her fitness goals. She talks about how she got into bodybuilding when the typical competition diet was the "chicken, broccoli, and rice" and how she wanted to add variety in a fun and tasty way. Celeste also shares her personal experiences in finding Bambody products and how she felt it helped her mend her relationship with food and allow herself freedom and flexibility in her diet, as well as allow herself to have an indulgent sweet treat on a regular basis yet that also supports her and her goals. Next, Celeste asks Stefanie about personal goals Stefanie has and she shares that she started working with a coach again and that she loves the idea of one day returning to the stage. Then, the two women talk about Stefanie's circle of friends and customers. Celeste asks Stefanie about the circle of love she has and maintains at all times and how she has developed such a strong support circle. Concluding the episode Stefanie shares how listeners can further connect with and talk with her through her personal and business channels on social media. [6:50] Celeste asks Stefanie about her initial feelings and reactions to the accusations being made against her company. [9:50] Stefanie shares how she decided the best way to first address the situation as a business owner as opposed to letting emotions fuel her response, even on social media. [12:20] Celeste asks Stefanie to walk customers through the complexities of the situation when it came to immediately addressing concerns and doubts that arose about Bambody products. [16:20] Stefanie explains why the lab results were not immediately posted after receiving them and how they are difficult to understand by the "average consumer." [19:45] Celeste asks Stefanie if the lab was able to share the results of the previous tests, product quantity, etc. with Stefanie. [23:00] Stefanie talks about the nutrition labels on Bambody products and how they differ from other treats made in mass quantities and produced in factories. Show notes

In episode two of the Returning Guest series, host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down for a second time with Crisis Counselor, Master student of gerontology, Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Personal Trainer, Kate Abate to dig deeper into Kate's life outside of competing. She shares about the Autoimmune diet she has been following and it's impact on her overall gut health and colitis. Beyond that, Kate discusses her own hypermobility and the levels it can work at outside of simply "being flexible". She shares how the hypermobility works its way down to her internal organs and joints and the correlation that exists between her hypermobility and her physical and mental health. Kate studies gerontology which is the study of the aging process. Kate talks about the aging process as growth and development. She talks about how even though the body no longer grows taller, it grows and develops in many other fascinating ways. Because she is receiving this new degree, Kate talks about how she wants to expand her business once she receives her diploma. Just like getting this degree is allowing her to "pivot" in her own life, Kate wants to be able to reach those who have also reached a pivot point in their life, whether it be in fitness, lifestyle, wellbeing or even a financial pivot. Even through all of this future planning, Kate shares how she is able to bring herself back to the present moment and enjoy every day. As the episode progresses, Kate talks about how she began her career in crisis counseling, stemming from trauma she experienced in her own childhood and in her 20s. She talks about how she was able to heal from this trauma and how she used a difficult time in her life to launch her into the world that is crisis counseling. Kate shares some of the best things that have come to her personally from crisis counseling and how to speak out when feeling the shame that is accompanied by the violence of a sexual assault.
