    Common Sense Ohio

We’re taking a common sense approach to the news events in Ohio. And why Ohio?
Well, because it’s right from the middle. It’s the heart of it all. It’s the place where you can test almost all Americanized theories. It’s a jumping-off point to having greater discussions about politics and news. And what’s going on not only in the state of Ohio, but the country –and maybe even the rest of the world.

Your Common Sense hosts are: Stephen Palmer is the Managing Partner for the law firm, Palmer Legal Defense. Norm Murdock is an automobile racing driver and owner of a high-performance and restoration car parts company. Brett Johnson is an award-winning podcast consultant and small business owner for nearly 10 years, leaving a long career in radio.

Border Security Sparks A Battle Between State and Federal Government Jan 26, 2024
    Show notes

Hey there, Common Sense Ohio listeners! It's Norm, Steve, and Brett, back at it again with another episode of our show. We've got a lot to cover today, so grab a cup of coffee in your Harper Plus Accounting coffee mug, and let's dive in.

We kicked off the show with a hot topic - misconduct in sports. We dished out our thoughts on the differences between a coach's misconduct (looking at you, Jim Harbaugh) and player cheating. We didn't hold back on the Ohio State scandal and its aftermath, digging deep into the leaders’ responsibilities and deniability in such situations. Plus, we couldn't resist comparing it to the Penn State scandal and the lack of proper action. We touch on NCAA violations, the impacts of the new name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules on college sports, and the repercussions for individuals and universities.

You know we couldn't resist dipping our toes into political waters. We discussed Governor Abbott’s actions at the border and his invocation of the 10th Amendment. It got pretty intense, with mentions of historical conflicts between state and federal governments, and even a Supreme Court case from the pre-Civil War era.

From there, we dived into immigration laws, border security, and the potential need for the US Supreme Court to intervene. Of course, we didn’t shy away from expressing our frustration with federal laws not being enforced. We even delved into the economic and social impacts of large-scale immigration.

But hey, it's not all politics and serious stuff! We also geeked out about historical events like World War II's Battle of Stalingrad and delved into an interesting movie recommendation, "Enemy at the Gates."

So, grab that coffee mug, settle in, and get ready for an episode packed with common sense discussions. Don’t forget to engage with us on social media – we love hearing from our fellow Common Sense Ohio enthusiasts. We're always aiming for common sense!

Paying Kindergarteners To Go To School, That'll Learn 'em Jan 19, 2024
    Show notes

Hey there, Common Sense Ohio fans! It's your favorite trio - Norm, Steve, and Brett - here with all the latest and greatest discussion from our latest podcast episode. We covered a lot of ground in our tantalizing chat, so let's dive right in.

First up, we delved into the potential decision by the US Supreme Court regarding Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense. Needless to say, we didn't hold back on our disappointment with what we think will be the outcome. We made sure to weigh in on the implications and the impact it could have on administrative agencies' rulemaking power.

We also expressed our concerns about the power of administrative agencies, with our good old comparison to "brown shirts" drawing some laughs and nods of agreement.

Of course, we couldn't resist getting into the nitty-gritty of regulatory issues affecting industries. From oil to shrimp to lobsters, we had a lot to say about the impact on prices and consumers. And don't get us started on Congress and the Republican Party - we had some choice words for their priorities and actions.

We couldn't help but chuckle and shake our heads at the Ohio legislature's proposal to require an ID for online pornography viewing. As parents ourselves, we understand the importance of safeguarding what our kids are exposed to, but we also raised some valid doubts about the effectiveness of such a requirement. Oh, and our subterfuge discussion? It's a doozy!

Now, if you're a Jordan Peterson fan, you'll be glad to know we discussed his recent comments and the controversies he sparked. We didn't hold back from diving deep into societal norms, historical perspectives, and the impact on democracy and free speech. And don't even get us started on the mismanagement at the White House!

Overall, it was an episode packed with thought-provoking discussion and a healthy dose of humor. We encourage you to listen and share your thoughts with us. After all, our podcast is all about common sense and open dialogue, and we love hearing from our listeners.

Till next time, stay curious and keep your common sense radar on high alert!

Greetings, Common Sense Ohio community! We hope you're tucked in with a cup of something warm and festive as you join us for another deep dive into the every day topics that make up our lives. We explore everything from heartwarming Christmas movies to historical events that shape the world we live in.

First off, we couldn't resist indulging in some holiday movie talk. We chat about classics like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street," but we also delve into modern favorites like "Elf" and "Die Hard"! Oh yes, the debate was real - is "Die Hard" a Christmas movie or not? Steve Palmer certainly thinks so! We reflect on the joy these movies bring, especially during the festive season.

But it wasn't all tinsel and mistletoe – we address some weighty issues too. We discussed the crucial importance of reconciliation, touching upon the Confederacy and the complexities of judging historical figures and events. The challenges of Reconstruction after the Civil War and the ongoing debates around Confederate memorials provided food for thought. It's a reminder that understanding our history is essential for shaping our future.

Switching gears, we tackle a few legal matters. Our discussion about libel and its potential consequences in civil cases is eye-opening. The intricate details behind the laws surrounding libel and the potential impact of large civil awards on defendants kept us captivated.

Then, we can't resist diving into significant historical events – especially ones that occurred around this time of year. The Battle of the Bulge during World War II had a pivotal role in shaping history. We marveled at the resolve and courage displayed by the soldiers during those freezing December days.

To close, we emphasize the importance of kindness, love, and family unity during the Christmas season. Focus on the true meaning of Christmas, stay safe, and celebrate responsibly.

So there you have it, folks! A rich tapestry of discussions and reflections that capture the essence of the holiday season. We look forward to hearing your feedback – and remember, don't forget to spread some extra cheer this season! Happy holidays to all, and until next time, this is Common Sense Ohio, signing off.

Understanding the New Ohio House Bills 161 and 187 Dec 01, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode of Common Sense Ohio, hosts Norm Murdock, Steve Palmer, and Brett Johnson delve into a wide range of topics, guided by their common sense perspective.

Ohio House Bill 187. What is the impact on property values, particularly for individuals on fixed incomes? They discuss how inflation, added taxes and constructive eviction further exacerbate the challenges faced by the elderly. The conversation exposes the effects of real estate investors offering life tenancies.

Ohio House Bill 161. Revised Code to eliminate the spousal exceptions for the offenses of rape, sexual battery, unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, gross sexual imposition, sexual imposition, and importuning and to permit a person to testify against the person's spouse in a prosecution for any of those offenses. What effect might this have on divorce settlements?

SAT and ACT's are continuing to be downplayed by a number of Ohio universities. They look at the evolving landscape of college admissions without standardized testing requirements.

Censorship by social media platforms and the potential erosion of constitutional rights. They draw parallels to George Orwell's "1984," and express concerns about the incremental erosion of freedoms and the dangers of political self-interest when granting power.
