    Coming Out Late

Coming Out Late Podcast is the go-to podcast for all things coming out later in life. Which means, if you’ve ever wondered, “Am I gay?”, or, if you’ve ever laid awake in bed at night, and fantasized about being in a same sex relationship, then this podcast is for you. Whether you are in your 30’s, or even your 60’s, or anything in between, and have either “always known” you are gay but because of comphet or a strict religious upbringing, you could never do anything about it. Or maybe you are just-now “awakening”, later in life, realizing that your true calling, the true you has been wanting to explore this side of yourself that has been stuffed and buried deep below the surface of heteronormativity and internalized homophobia for years. Then this podcast is for you.
Through real, raw, and vulnerable conversations, we cover all-topics related to Coming Out Late in life from the beginning to the messy-middle to being “on the other side”. We have conversations with real women who have had their “Aha!” moments when they said to themselves, “Holy Sh!T! I’m Gay!”. We get vulnerable with couples, with married women, with their children, and sometimes even with their spouses about what do we do now; how do we co-parent, should we get a divorce, can I afford to live on my own, and dealing with the immense feelings of guilt and shame for making such an enormous life-change, upsetting and shaking-up our family units. Come take a listen. Here you will find community, support, solace and hear real stories SO similar to your own. Subscribe and like your next favorite podcast, Coming Out Late Podcast.

Coming Out to Rude Comments Jun 27, 2022

In this episode, Robin shares with us some examples of the types of comments we could possibly and most likely WILL receive as we slowly OR quickly come out to people all around us. Knowing what questions *may* be asked during your coming out process is half the battle - at least that way you can prepare for them, right? Robin also shares with us some possible retorts to these questions, and maybe a few retorts that she really wouldn’t advise you saying, but ones SHE would love to have you say in these oftentimes rude, intrusive scenarios. Sometimes ‘knowing’ what to expect when we’re navigating the coming out process IS half the battle!! Hopefully you won’t need ANY of these responses - but be prepared and decide how YOU want to respond should you be asked a personal, intrusive question.

In this episode, you will learn…

    • What are some of the common questions we ARE asked when we’re coming out to others - or even if we’re NOT coming out and we’re simply in a social setting among other not-straight women.
    • How to handle rude and inappropriate personal questions when faced with “curious” people questioning YOUR sexuality, for you.
    • Should you respond? Should you respond snidely? Should you confront their blunt rudeness? It all depends….
    • Being prepared and expecting the unexpected is usually a good tactic to take!

Divorcing, Dating & Coming Out to My Son Jun 20, 2022

In this episode, Robin reads to us from a three-part social media post, whereby the author introduces herself as a 35-year old cis woman married to a man for 13 years. Together, they have five children, (under the age of 12). She describes her STBX-husband as pretty conservative and considers the process of her coming out to him as an act of cheating on him.

In this episode, you will learn…

    • Navigating a rocky coming-out when the husband is pretty conservative and making things really difficult from the start.
    • Identifying as bi-sexual for a few years, but now questioning that label.
    • That social media and messaging IS a “thing” among women who just meet up either online, or in person at a bar, (as was the case for this firefly).
    • Recognizing that distance and differences could very well NOT be the perfect ingredient for a sustainable relationship - or is it?
    • What would it be like to have a sexual encounter with a woman? The firefly author was worried she wouldn’t feel anything or be aroused - see what she found out about that.
    • A creative way to have your significant other meet your kids and have your kids meet “Mommy’s new friend”.
    • Seeing an opening and coming out to my son.

Rainbow Labs' Queer Youth Meet Up w/Late Blooming Queer Women Jun 13, 2022

In this episode, Robin celebrates PRIDE month by showcasing a very special group of young people from a Los Angeles-based non-profit organization called RAINBOW LABS. Rainbow Labs creates a series of after-school programming (both in-person and online), seeking to mentor and support underserved Queer and Gender Non-Conforming (QGNC) youth ages 12-18. The idea of Rainbow Labs, launched in 2020, was to address the unique challenges faced by queer and gender nonconforming youth. The content of the labs are designed by QGNC youth for QGNC youth, led by a team of mentors who are trained in trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and youth development. Rainbows Labs is essentially a safe space to explore identity, life skills and empower QGNC to participate in real-world applications. The Mission of Rainbow Labs is to embolden Queer and Gender Nonconforming youth to discover, curate and experiment with the elements of a fulfilled life through community building and the lived experiences of mentors. Their Vision is a world in which all Queer and Gender Nonconforming Youth see themselves as co-creators of an equitable, and progressive society.

In this episode, you will learn…

    • The importance of youth having queer representation to meet, know and work with; as well as the importance of LGBTQIA+ just being kids, and not always having to be “on” as advocates protesting or picketing.
    • Why we, as newly queer youth and queer adults, want and need to be recognized and accepted as queer in all of our respective communities.
    • Why acceptance from our loved ones and close friends is critical to us.
    • How damaging and harmful it can be when we’re told by family members, parents, siblings, that, “it’s ok to be queer, but just don’t tell anyone, keep it to yourself.
    • The similarities and the differences that BOTH of our generations face in the challenges of coming out and living our authentic selves.
    • Queer youth coming-out to their parents; and queer moms coming-out to their (queer) children.
    • What does QGNC stand for? Queer & Gender Nonconforming.

Retreats, Gay History & Pride, Oh My! Jun 06, 2022

In this episode, Robin announces her latest collaboration with Women OUT West Tours whereby Robin will lead and facilitate in-person “Firefly” Retreats in Escalante, UT. The inaugural Firefly retreat is October 9-13, 2022. But that won’t be the last, so if you cannot make it on October 9, there will be plenty more to sign-up for. What an opportunity to be out in nature and have deep, meaning facilitated, and non-facilitated conversations with other women who ‘get you’! In this episode, Robin also touches upon a little bit of Gay History when she discusses the Stonewall Riots, the book, “Game Changers: Lesbians You Should Know About”, and her new favorite podcast, “Making Gay History”, by Eric Marcus. “Making Gay History’s” unique format, historic context and non-celebrity interviews make for an entertaining AND sobering way to learn about the mind-blowing prejudices and harassment our gay brothers and sisters endured, and oftentimes didn’t endure, before us.

In this episode, you will also learn…

    • The importance of knowing our Gay History. As a Late Bloomer herself, Robin describes how little she knew about the Stonewall Riots that took place on June 27, 1969, and decided she wanted to learn more about her gay brothers and sisters who came before her.
    • The importance of PRIDE month and little ways you can feel and show your Pride during the month of June.
    • The the Women Loving Women (Virtual) Speaker Summit is on Saturday, June 25th at 3pm EST. Sign up using this Calendly link: https://calendly.com/womenlovingwomen/women-loving-women-speaker-summit-2
    • The only way to get your hands on a copy of the book, “Game Changers: Lesbian You Should Know About” is to go to: www.lesbiangamechangers.com
    • How one lesbian, Donna Hitchens, a recent law school graduate changed the lives of hundreds, maybe even thousands, of lesbians first, by forming, (with some help from Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco), The Lesbian Rights Project, which later became the NCLR, (the National Center for Lesbian Rights).
    • How the birth of “Curve” magazine came about, thanks to the former bookstore clerk and magazine Founder, Frances “Franco” Stevens. First and foremost, “Curve” was a celebration of the women shaping our community.

Navigating Late Blooming Relationships May 30, 2022

In this episode, Robin sits down with not one, but two late-in-lifer’s. She invites recent podcast guest Lori back for a chat about “relationships” with Robin’s friend and repeat podcast guest - Samantha Fox. Samantha is a lesbian curiosity and sexuality coach and a licensed family and marriage therapist in New York who also happens to be a late bloomer herself. Today, Samantha, Lori & Robin take a deep dive into some specific relationship issues that come up for late bloomers once you’ve started dating. Take notes, there’s lots to learn in this episode about women dating women!

In this episode, you will learn…

    • The importance of knowing thyself before really diving into serious relationships - it will help you better navigate the sometimes choppy waters!
    • The importance of communication between you and your partner BEFORE you embark on a night out on the town! Understanding each other’s boundaries, what to possibly expect and WHO to possibly expect at any function you may attend together.
    • That just because we are coming out later in our lives does NOT necessarily mean that all the other late blooming gay folx have done the inner work on themselves before diving into the dating pool! Beware, not ALL queer women are created equal - nor have they been working on themselves!.
    • The Women Loving Women Speaker Summit #2 has been announced and is on Saturday, June 25th at 3pm EST. Early Bird tickets are on sale now thru midnight on June 3rd. For the link to Register, email Robin at: Comingoutlater@gmail.com. And guess who our Keynote Speaker is? Samantha Fox!!! https://calendly.com/womenlovingwomen/women-loving-women-speaker-summit-2

Coming Out 35 Years Later: The Truth DOES Set Us Free May 23, 2022

In this episode, Robin sits down with fellow firefly late bloomer, Lori, to talk about her long journey from being in the closet, to a 5-year lesbian relationship at 17 years old, (that lasted FIVE years!), to going back in the closet for 30+ more years. Lori was married to a man for 27-years and is blessed with one daughter. Along the journey, Lori manages to ‘find herself’ and walk through the open doors that people invited her to walk though. Through the conversation, Robin & Lori talk about the depth of growth we experience when we come out later, (we were both in our 50’s when we came out), the necessity of UN-learning SO many ‘things’, and how do we go about re-building our lives once we finally do come out!

In this episode, you will learn…

    • The importance of reflecting back on all our growth and milestones so far
    • The critical necessity of UN-learning SO much of what we’d been conditioned to think, feel and do!
    • Unpacking the suitcase of our lives, and getting to decide this time, what stays, what goes, and what gets donated to a worthy cause! (Lol).
    • Ask yourself, “What have I always wanted to do that I’ve never done before?”
    • The Talking Stone: let your secrets out - they will set you free!

From Depressed, Angry & Anxious to Flourishing in Life! May 16, 2022

In this episode, Robin reminds us of the significance and importance of us not only hearing other women’s coming out stories, but also telling our own. We grow, we learn and we heal every time we share or hear coming out late stories. Robin reads to us the story of one particular woman who can recall always being attracted to women for as long as she could remember - but knew she had to suppress those thoughts and feelings. (Thank you social norms and comphet!) After being married to a man, and hitting 40-years old, she made a promise to herself that the second half of her life was going to be on her terms. After that inspiring story, Robin also talks about the rate or speed at which you should proceed on your journey of coming out. And, at the end of this episode, Robin will share with us the responses from a variety of late bloomers, to this statement: “My first kiss with a woman was…”!

In this episode, you will learn…

    • How do we find ourselves and live in our truth?
    • Going from three kids and 2 marriages to men later - how one woman went from miserable, depressed, angry and anxious to flourishing in life!
    • Manifesting the things we’ve always wanted by NOT living a life that other people want and expect from us.

Coming 'Out' and Into New Relationships May 09, 2022

Robin addresses two important topics that arise from our Coming Out Late journey: first, navigating our first, or first couple-of queer relationships. After the trauma has subsided, what can we do to ensure our next relationship will be 10x better than the last? And, second, Robin shares with us some examples of responses the husbands, partners or significant others say to us when we come ‘out’ to them for the first time. Some are simply unbelievable, while others are unthinkable and unacceptable! In addition to covering these two important topics, Robin also shares with us two very meaningful quotes that we ALL need to remember and embrace!

In this episode, you will learn…

    • Some of the differences between being in a relationship with a late blooming lesbian versus a woman who has been out and lesbian her whole life. BOTH types of women are coming at it from (at least) two very distinct places in life.
    • There are certainly pros and cons to dating a late bloominglesbian and a lifelong lesbian. Somehow, we manage to make these relationships work - or not! What to look out for and how to stand your ground!
    • That the end of our first-, or first-couple of queer relationships can be gut-wrenching; but there are PLENTY of ‘things’ we can we learn from them.
    • Recognizing ‘red flags’ in relationships and what to do about them.
    • Co-Dependency: What is it? Do I have it? And what can I do about it?
    • Robin is starting a brand new Women Loving Women (paid subscription) Membership Community in Circle.so in JUNE! Happy PRIDE everyone! It promises to be chock full of inspiration, support, enlightenment, education, and FUN!
    • What to expect when we tell our significant others/partners/husbands that we’re gay? You won’t believe some of their responses!!

Ep. #31: Newly Out & Navigating Lesbian Life at 57 May 02, 2022

Robin addresses a recent post written by a woman coming out later in life - in fact - she just came out at the age of 57! Robin highlights the small-, medium- and large-hurdles that we, at ANY age are likely to face during our coming out late journey. In addition to reading and sharing this very vulnerable and relatable post, Robin also shares the compassionate and encouraging responses the author of the post received.

In this episode, you will learn…

    • This Coming Out Late stuff is TOUGH! It is NOT an easy journey. But it IS worth it - I promise!
    • In addition to the healing properties of hearing other women’s coming out late stories, SHARING our own stories can be incredibly healing as well.
    • Navigating our new identities as lesbian or queer or bi is really tough.
    • That it’s normal to feel awkward and unsure of ourselves in this process.
    • A few helpful books/resources she read that helped her.
    • What decisions need to be made once you tell your significant other that you are coming out as ‘not-straight’.
    • Am I a baby-gay or an imposter?

Robin explores the idea of change and what change means for us on our coming out journey. She talks about social conditioning as it relates to how we formed our roles in life and how we have lived our whole lives under social conditioning. • Living life as an adventure and being true to yourself, so you can thrive, not just survive.

    • Personal growth is not a matter of learning new information but of unlearning old limits.
    • Change is inevitable, but there are also opportunities for growth and progress.

Robin and Kari take a stroll down memory lane, sharing and retelling their stories of coming out later in life, as well as exploring the ‘opportunities’ that come with this journey. They discuss the ‘snow globe’ theory, facing our fears, naming and labeling ourselves, and learning from our break-ups, to name a few.

    • You are not alone. You are not the only one!
    • Don’t be afraid of the unknown. Get excited about the new opportunities.
    • The importance of support. Who am I? I just don’t know who I am!
    • Should I immediately jump into a relationship? Or should I wait, remain single, and ‘work on me’ first?
    • Feeling the feels. Feel all your feelings. Sit with them, and acknowledge them.
    • To label or not to label? It doesn’t matter because it’s up to you. There are no rules to what we call ourselves - if anything at all. Saying ‘those words’ out loud.

EP4: How To Deal With Grief When Coming Out Oct 25, 2021

    “Coming-Out-Late Grief: It’s Real”

‘Life' is full of uncertainty, discomfort and pain, as well as joy, peace and freedom. It is when we master the art of being comfortable with discomfort and uncertainty, that we have mastered the art of living life - not just surviving it.

Why should our coming out late journey be any different? It is in the discomfort, the uncertainty and the grief in which our growth can occur and our souls may soar. Grief is not only an expected part of ‘life’, but it will also be an expected and painful part of our coming out late process! This journey you are on is not easy - - but it is well worth it all, in the end. And the good news is - - everyone will survive the grieving process and your coming out late journey - - it just takes time - - a lot of time and patience!

In this episode, you will learn…

    • That your grief, sadness and pain is very real, and to be expected. That mourning and grieving during your coming-out journey is ‘normal’, and doesn’t just happen once, but does lessen over time. Give yourself plenty of love, grace and space to simply ‘be’.
    • That you are going through a metamorphosis of sorts; you will be shedding old ‘skin’ and rebirthing a new identity. With those significant changes come intense feelings; heavy, deeply-felt feelings. Feel them all. Feeling them all gives them credence and in doing so allows them to ‘pass through you’ more freely and quickly.
    • Why it’s critical that you cry - and cry often! Let your tears flow, and flow freely and flow often. Crying is not a weakness - it is a necessary and natural process in the release of toxins and emotions that simply must come out - just like you must come out.

EP3: Were There Signs of "Gayness" When I Was Young? Oct 18, 2021

“You Are Not Alone: Q’s Read from FB”

Your journey is just that - YOUR journey - no one else’s!

IF you choose to ‘come out’, (and how and when), it is 1000% completely YOUR decision! Whether you’ve always known you are gay, or just now figuring out that you may be bi-sexual, pansexual, demisexual, lesbian, or embrace no label at all, that is your business. If you are questioning your sexuality, it is only your business to explore and figure out. And there’s no rush in figuring this out either - this is not a race, in fact, it is definitely not even a sprint - our exploration and self-reflection is more of a marathon. Take it slowly and deliberately. Take your time, and reach out to other like-minded women in the Facebook group, Coming Out Late Community.

In this episode, you will learn about…

    • How hearing other women’s ‘coming out later in life’ stories can provide such relief, and realize that you are not alone - that there are so many women like ‘us’!

EP2: How Do I Know If I’m Really Gay? (And, What If I’m Wrong?) Oct 11, 2021

Some of us went a lifetime having ‘no clue’ we were attracted to women until much later in life. Others, on the other hand, always knew they ‘liked girls’, but stuffed it down, way down. Internal homophobia, deep-seeded homophobic denial, and compulsory-heteronormativity all played a huge role in delaying, and denying, our journey to discovering and embracing our true selves. One thing we late-bloomers know for sure is, if we were straight, we sure as heck wouldn’t be asking ourselves if we weren’t! But don’t take our word for it, keep listening to the Coming Out Late Podcast and hear the similarities in our stories.

In this episode, you will learn about…

How Robin figured out she’s gay, (using her unique ‘research technique’)

How many of us get to the point of: “Ok. Enough is enough already. I have to figure this out! Why am I feeling this way toward women? ”

“So this IS a ‘thing’. It isn’t just me.”

Robin’s theory on her own deep homophobic denial

    EP1: Holy Sh!t! I’m Gay! Oct 11, 2021

How does one “follow the bread crumbs” to discover and/or confirm if they are gay or not? Great question! Married to a man for nearly 30-years, Robin had her “Aha!” moment literally on her 54th birthday. (No. That’s not a typo. She came out to herself at 54-years of age!) Robin takes you on her journey from those first vague and sporadic inner stirrings she felt about women to finally figuring out “what was wrong with her”. Robin shares with us how she cracked-her-case that had been plaguing her and brewing within her for decades - yet seemingly laid dormant throughout her lifetime.

In this episode, you will learn about…

    • What you can expect from this and future episodes of the Coming Out Late Podcast
    • Robins’ coming-out story and how she eventually came out to herself
    • The events and clues that led-up to Robins’ “Aha!” moment
    • Compulsory-heteronormativity and internalized homophobia
    • How did Robin figure out she’s gay? (Cliffhanger Clue: My Secret Research Project, explained in Episode #2 of the Coming Out Late Podcast.)
