In 2013, Disney released Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter. Though generally considered a box office flop, is it as bad as it's made out to be??

    Mandatory Marvel & DC Ep18: Vision (2015-2016) Review Jan 13, 2021
    Show notes

Comics in Motion is proud to partner with Lenovations Press! Check out their high quality independent comics here.

It is time for episode 18 of Mandatory Marvel & DC, a show from the Comics In Motion network that looks back at the very biggest and best stories from the annals of the Big 2 - Marvel and DC!

Each episode, Max Byrne will be joined by a special guest to enjoy a chat about that episode's subject matter, talking about what we love about these top tier titles!

For this eighteenth installment, we look back at the wonderful Tom King run on Vision, from 2015 to 2016. With stunning art from Gabriel Hernandez Walta, this dark and twisted tale takes the character in a new direction that has unquestionably influenced the upcoming MCU TV show, Wandavision.

This week, Max is joined once again by the stupendously great Dave Horrocks, co-founder of the Comics In Motion network and one hell of a prolific podcaster!

If you want to get in touch with Max about comics or to suggest any future shows, please say to him on Twitter @maxybyrne. You can read his reviews of all kinds of content at www.dcworld.org.uk, www.darknightnews.com, www.fantasticuniverses.com, and www.getyourcomicon.com

    Episode 4: “Batman ‘39”- The Original Bat-Man

Today I welcome Steve J. Ray one of the hosts of Superheroes for Dummies as we explore the original Bat-Man who appeared in Detective Comics #27. This version is currently appearing in Generations: Shattered. We not only compare this original iteration of the character with the current version, but follow a few other paths that are related to Golden Age comics. There’s no shortage of laughter in this episode!

Star Wars: Comics In Canon - Ep 39: Anakin Freeing Slaves, Mace’s Saber, Padmé’s Mission & Jar Jar Binks (Age Of Republic) Jan 09, 2021
    Show notes

This week features the final 4 stories in the Age Of Republic one-shot comic series, all set around the Clone Wars; Anakin Skywalker in “The Sacrifice”, Padmé Amidala in “Bridge”, “The Weapon” with Mace Windu and “501 Plus One” with Rex and Jar Jar Binks, Mike also gives some additional info about each of the characters and recommendations for season 1 of the Clone Wars (details below).
The Age Of Republic comics Anakin Skywalker & Padmé Amidala were both written by Jody Houser, pencilled by Wilton Santos & Cory Smith, inked by Walden Wong (Marc Deering also inked Padmé) and Java Tartaglia was the colourist for both too.

In AoR Special, “The Weapon” was written by Ethan Sacks, pencilled by Paolo Villanelli and the colourist was Erick Arciniega while “501 Plus One” was written by Marc Guggenheim, pencilled by Caspar Wijngaard and the colourist was Cris Peter.

AoR Special was released in January 2019, AoR Anakin was released February 2019 and AoR Padmé was released March 2019. The AoR Heroes trade paperback was released in May 2019 while the AoR hardcover (with heroes & villains) was released February 2020.

If you want to get into the animated Clone Wars series (on Disney+), skip the movie and watch episodes 5, 9-12 and 19-22. Season 2 onwards is much better than season 1, so you can watch all CW episodes from there!

For the other Age Of Republic stories, check out episodes; 2 for Maul, 26 for Dooku, 31 for Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon and 35 for Jango Fett, Grievous & Asajj Ventress. Mike will be tackling the Age Of Rebellion comics shortly so be sure to subscribe for those!
For more comic-Anakin, check out episode 11 for the Obi-Wan & Anakin mini-series or episode 31 featuring Obi-Wan’s AoR story!

In the last episode of SWCIC (episode 38), Mike tackled the 6-part mini-series; Thrawn; adapted from the Timothy Zahn canon novel of the same name (set between Revenge Of The Sith & A New Hope), showing how he was enrolled into the Empire, his rise in the ranks, how other officers viewed him, his work with Wullf Yularen & Governor Pryce, his aide Eli Vanto and more!

Mike appeared on a recent episode of Comics On Trial, prosecuting Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker against Tony of Indie Comics Spotlight with Mike’s occasional co-host Megan as the judge (6th December): https://spoti.fi/3otJN5I

Tony and Kyle break down the brilliant book by Jonathan Case. Dear Creature.

Deep beneath the waves, a creature named Grue broods. He no longer wants to eat lusty beachgoers, no matter how their hormones call to him. A chorus of crabs urges him to reconsider. After all, people are delicious! But this monster has changed. Grue found Shakespeare's plays in cola bottles and, through them, a new heart. Now he yearns to join the world above.

When his first attempt ends... poorly, Grue searches for the person who cast the plays into the sea. What he finds is love in the arms of Giulietta—a woman trapped in her own world. When she and Grue meet, Giulietta believes her prayers are answered. But people have gone missing and Giulietta's nephew is the prime suspect. With his past catching up to him, Grue must decide if becoming a new man means ignoring the monster he was.

Rising from a brine of drive-in pulp and gentle poetry, Jonathan Case's debut graphic novel Dear Creature is the love story you never imagined!

Episode 3 Notes “Boomerang, Zoomerang” Lev Gleason’s Daredevil

In this episode I tackle the Golden Age Daredevil! This is a character you may not be familiar with at all. However, he had a 10 year run from 1940 to 1950 and was a quite popular character at the time. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode with recommended reading from Rudolph Hess to Pygmy Aboriginal Australians.
