TV & Movie Reviews: X-Men First Class (2011)

One of the best X-Men movies - First Class. Does it still feel as fresh as it initially was? A great cameo from Logan.

    Plot Summary:

Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN.

Indie Comics Spotlight: The Boys Part II May 20, 2021
    Show notes

This week, the show is so epic that Tony needed two guests to cover it.

First, back from his triumphant appearance when we covered Preacher is Brad Filicky of DC Comics News and the DC comics news podcast network.

Also, a man whose middle name might legally be changed to podcaster, Dave Horrocks.Co-Founder of the Comics in Motion network.

Brad, Dave and Tony do a DEEP DEEP dive into Dynamite comics fever dream, super hero bashing, norm shattering series. The Boys.

The Boys is an American comic book series, written by Garth Ennis and co-created, designed, and illustrated by Darick Robertson. It was originally published by Wildstorm (DC Comics) before moving to Dynamite Entertainment.

The series is set between 2006–2008 in a world where superheroes exist. However, most of the superheroes in the series’ universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. The story follows a small clandestine CIA squad, informally known as “The Boys“, led by Butcher and also consisting of Mother’s Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and new addition “Wee” Hughie Campbell, who are charged with monitoring the superhero community, often leading to gruesome confrontations and dreadful results; in parallel, a key subplot follows Annie “Starlight” January, a young and naive superhero who joins the Seven, the most prestigious – and corrupted – superhero group in the world and The Boys‘ most powerful enemies.

    Genres: Drama, Horror, Mature, Superhero

    Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment

    Writer: Garth Ennis

    Artist: Darick Robertson

    Publication date: October 2006 – November 2012

Comics in Motion is now a Humble Bundle Partner.

Here is a link to the Teen Titans comic that Tony mistook for a Green Lantern Comic.

Seasons Greetings to The Nevers S1E1 - Pilot May 19, 2021
    Show notes

We've been Binging Buffy, but now it's time to take a look at something contemporary and current. So, where better to start than with a show you could elevator pitch as Victorian Buffy meets X-Men? That's what we thought.

Join JAC as he breaks down each episode and considers whether it's a show worth your time in this era of episodic abundance or whether you should never.

Each episode he is joined by a special guest so they can provide their unique perspective. For episode 1. Pilot, JAC is joined by co-creator of the Comics in Motion network, Dave Horrocks, for a deep dive into the always tricky first episode of a new show to discuss whether it successfully establishes it's world, characters and parameters.

Full spoilers throughout for the episode.

If you want to get in touch with JAC about this episode or any other area of fandom he can be found on twitter under the handle @iamjacsmusings. His thoughts on TV, films and comics can be read at iamjacsmusings.wordpress.com.

See you in a week's time for episode 2. Exposure.

Comics in Motion is now a Humble Bundle Partner.

This week, Tony is starting his new show HIDDEN GEMS where he spends 20-30 minutes doing a spoiler free look at a comic that didn’t do very well, but that he thinks should get some love.

In 1977, NASA inexplicably sent four hamsters into space to investigate a strange mass of radioactive gelatin that was hovering over the Earth.
Due to exposure from the radioactive mass, the four hamsters quickly changed, evolving into something NEW.
    Something ADOLESCENT.
    Something RADIOACTIVE.
Crash landing in the Himalayas, the Hamsters were found by a hidden monastery of monks who nursed them back to health, training the group in the martial arts.
