Bob Huggins out at West Virginia, SDSU flirts with Pac-12, Maryland’s new facilities & how high should Michigan be ranked? Jun 19, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde discuss the weekend’s huge college athletics news after West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins stepped down from his role after receiving a DUI arrest in Pittsburgh

Already walking on thin ice after an insensitive radio appearance this spring, Bob Huggins was arrested on Saturday night after reportedly blowing a .210 on a breathalyzer. West Virginia allowed Huggins to step down instead of an immediate firing, but the Hall of Fame coach will be leaving the Mountaineers on a low note nonetheless.

San Diego State has entered a tricky situation with their plans to leave the Mountain West Conference. The school has asked for a one-month extension to avoid a roughly $17 million increase of buyout money that would be owed to the Mountain West. SDSU’s ultimate decision still appears to hinge on who the Pac-12 partners with for their upcoming media deal.

Maryland football coach Mike Locksley spoke on the newest facilities that were completed in College Park, Maryland. Locksley stated that the athletes don’t favor elite facilities anymore and would rather take payments instead of industry-standard locker rooms and training areas.

The Michigan Wolverines have a big season ahead of them, and with valuable starters returning to the team, some are ranking them very high heading into the season. Pat and Dan discuss whether or not Michigan should be granted a top ranking in a tough Big Ten conference going into 2023.

In news of the weird, a Kentucky resident had a legendary obituary written about him, the non-NCAA championships continue to amaze & we get an update on the Jell-O shot contest taking place at the College Baseball World Series.

    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger go through the recently announced plans for the SEC’s 2024 schedule after the addition of the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners.

The SEC will still be using an 8 game schedule in 2024, but the committee was able to provide a very balanced result for every team. The show discusses which teams have the hardest schedules due to out-of-conference opponents along with top-ranked SEC matchups. Texas and Oklahoma both have interesting draws with the renewal of some very old rivalries to come.

Next, Dan sheds light on how former president Richard Nixon helped sports fans everywhere by implementing national broadcasts during sellout playoff games.

Mississippi State took social media by storm with an interesting take on their 2024 opponent announcement. The graphic posted by their social media team incorporated rival school mascots generated by an AI software, which created some disturbing anthropomorphic images.

Texas Tech has decided to induct the late Mike Leach into their hall of honor. Ross provides his thoughts on how that decision would have been received by Mike Leach.

Incoming Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua had a story about his playing days at Notre Dame, including a humbling interaction with Lou Holtz.

Ross was able to talk with Charlie Baker about whether or not he supports the direction that the IRS is headed in regards to non-profit NIL collectives.

Lastly in news of the weird, a Belgian man fakes his own death, an Ecuadorian woman comes back from the dead & the podcast discusses Father’s Day plans.

IRS clamps down on NIL donors, Big 12 targeting Memphis & what to make of Baby Gronk? Jun 12, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger get together to track the Baby Gronk saga as well as a possible rendezvous between the Big 12 and Memphis.

Late last week it was reported that Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark took a meeting surrounding adding Memphis to the Big 12. Yormark denies that he was in Memphis, yet his track record this offseason shows that he wants to add more quality programs to his conference, so the podcast calculates whether it would be a good move or not.

The IRS has stated that NIL donors will be taxed & the money that goes into a NIL collective will not be tax-exempt. Many donors are hoping that this rule only applies to donations taking place in the future and not previous sums that have been put into collectives.

Youth football player Madden San Miguel, aka Baby Gronk has taken the internet by storm recently after more details surfaced surrounding how his dad operates within social media. The show discusses the pros and cons of promoting your kid with such ferocity at only 10 years old.

A recent article has come out detailing the University of Georgia football team’s issues off the field. The guys acknowledge Kirby Smart’s lack of control over his players as more problems continue to arise for the Bulldogs.

Bishop Sycamore, the fraudulent high school in Ohio that swindled an ESPN televised game against IMG Academy will be receiving its own HBO documentary. The guys have high hopes for the show and plead their case for the documentary to portray the subject with the comedic tone the story deserves.

The future Big Ten schedule was released which gives fans an opportunity to see the logistics of how the conference will operate with USC and UCLA. The two new west coast teams appear to have drawn the short end of the stick with average travel distances eclipsing 2,000+ miles.

Lastly in news of the weird, a USF professor spent 3 months underwater, Wisconsin is hiring a cheese taster & a man had a very impressive steak accomplishment.

1:00 Is the Big 12 looking to add Memphis?

13:00 The IRS has determined that NIL donations are taxable

17:49 Baby Gronk is in the headlines

    28:40 Georgia’s off-field issues continue

33:10 Fake high school Bishop Sycamore will be getting a documentary

35:44 The Big Ten released future schedules

More NIL lobbying in DC, the Urban Meyer-led Florida Gators are getting a documentary & should players boycott EA’s new college football game? Jun 07, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and Pat Forde & SI’s Ross Dellenger discuss the latest events taking place with college athletics in DC along with the 2006-2009 Florida Gators getting a documentary.

The guardrail lobbying has started up again in the nation’s capitol with a large number of college administrators and presidents meeting to discuss the future of college athletes being paid.

Out west, the remaining Pac-12 members have verbally agreed to their grant of rights. The TV deal will determine whether or not the verbal agreement becomes concrete, but at this time the teams are optimistic about sticking together.

Clemson had a big recruiting weekend by being able to sign a couple 5-star recruits along with other top-ranked talent to play under Dabo Swinney & company.

Netflix will be coming out with a new documentary featuring the exciting Urban Meyer lead Florida Gators. The pod is skeptical about the documentary, worried if it will mainly focus on the greatness of the team & not the off-the-field actions from the players and staff.

The University of Texas has renovated their locker room once again. This time putting $7 million into the space that was recently renovated in the Tom Herman era.

New compensation information has come out for college athletes in EA Sports’ upcoming NCAA football game. Players are expected to receive $500 to be featured in the game. This news has divided the internet as it seems a lot of people are impartial to whether or not the actual players are featured.

Lastly, in news of the weird Apple has made an update favorable to college sports fans, Dan did some digging into the world of competitive book collecting & a Michigan man had an interesting apology for a bouncer.

1:00 The guardrail lobbying is taking place in DC

8:57 The remaining Pac-12 members have agreed on their grant of rights

Trent Dilfer’s new NIL twist, possible changes to the recruiting calendar & “Would you eat it?” college baseball edition Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & SI’s Ross Dellenger react to UAB head coach Trent Dilfer’s recent comments about utilizing NIL in a brand new way.

In a recent statement Trent Dilfer was honest about the competition for recruits in the NIL and transfer portal landscape. He acknowledged the gap between P5 and G5 schools and believes that both could work together for a player’s benefit. The pitch of developing players for two years so they can earn more money at a bigger program is new and the pod wonders if college football can follow the same track as college basketball with their underclassmen.

A new study revealed how much money college athletes are really getting with their NIL deals. The study highlights the difference between starters, bench players and transfer portal players.

College football coaches are at it again with a new proposal to adjust NLI dates and national signing day. The pod is very disgruntled with the state of national signing day as there are much better options to be implemented.

This year’s college baseball tournament has given us a creative trio of milkshakes stemming from the Miami super regional. The fellas play another round of “Would you eat it?” with the shakes ranging from seafood to barbecue.

Lastly another round of non-NCAA championships took place so the pod takes a look at some of those competitions.

1:00 Trent Dilfer gets honest about NIL

23:28 A new study shows how much student athletes are actually getting paid from NIL

    Show notes

Dan Wetzel, along with SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger, discuss the Colorado Buffaloes starting the season in primetime and Peacock swooping in to stream big games for the upcoming college football season.

Before the television news, the pod acknowledges a possible new game changer with the fan experience at college baseball games. Due to a mass of events in Lexington, KY, fans of the college baseball super regionals could be looking for lodging on the University of Kentucky campus. Dan loves the idea & believes that it could be a great step for the fan experience.

The Coach Prime effect seems to be taking place quickly as the Colorado Buffaloes have 3 highly televised games in their first 3 weeks of the upcoming seasons. A couple of big noon kickoffs and an ESPN broadcast will give the public plenty of opportunities to see the new team in Boulder, CO.

The streaming service Peacock has locked in a couple intriguing games for the upcoming season including Michigan State-Washington & a Michigan game. The pod debates how the fans will receive having to find their favorite team’s games outside of cable providers.

As the SEC meetings continue, the fellas examine the nature of the mixers and dinners taking place along with the future of NIL within the conference.

SEC scheduling proposals, what does Nick Saban want & which state is the laziest? May 30, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger break down all the latest developments happening right now at this year’s SEC meetings.

The SEC is facing a big proposal of adding another in-conference game to each team’s schedule, which would shift the dynamics of the conference. The newly proposed 9-team format is controversial due to the permanent games each team will have. The shifting of program strength has coaches like Nick Saban disgruntled over the strength of schedule. Additionally, the weight of another SEC game could favor a 3-loss team making the playoff in the future if the three losses are close and respectable.

Other topics discussed during the SEC meetings included new NIL sanctions, the sports gambling industry & increased payment for an additional in-conference matchup.

Next, the guys chat about more information coming out surrounding the gambling scandal stemming from a bettor placing a large wager on an Alabama-LSU baseball.

A new study has ranked the laziest states in America so the podcast places their votes for which one is top-dog. The SEC states’ high representation in the rankings is off-putting given the fans’ elevated rate of shenanigans in the offseason.

A University of Oregon golfer suffered a very strange injury during the college championships and had to be removed from the tournament after stepping on a tee.

The updated list of non-NCAA championships released and the show reacts to the winners from cornhole, forensics, ballroom dance & much more.

The Big 12 is also conducting their annual meeting this week with a feverish desire to expand. Their options are being narrowed down to a group of Pac-12 schools and a group of basketball powerhouses.

Lastly, in news of the weird, a man in India drained a dam to retrieve his phone & two Wendy’s patrons in Ohio were upset at a lack of cheese.

What’s the future of sports on TV, Pac-12's newest woes & Georgia in more hot water May 24, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger center today’s podcast around all of the different directions that live sports could splinter off into as cable and streaming networks take a bigger slice of the broadcasting pie.

To open the show, Dan gives his assessment of the new documentary Bama Rush, which covers the ins and outs of students trying to be accepted into sororities at the University of Alabama. The massively popular greek life scene in Tuscaloosa has sparked millions of clicks on social media and now, there’s an in-depth look at the process of rushing a sorority there.

The future of how to watch sports is currently in flux for fans across the country. With the boom of streaming services and many opting to cut the cord, we could soon have a very different way to watch our favorite teams. ESPN is considering a move to strictly steaming, which could create a snowball effect for the rest of the major networks to follow. The guys debate the pros and cons of making the switch to streaming and how it may not be incredibly different in the end.

The Pac-12 had a rough week with reports of the University of Colorado being courted by the Big 12. Washington State’s administration also belittled the conference for the lack of support, while also mentioning the conference’s potential financial malpractice.

The off-field trouble is continuing in Athens, GA as Bulldog wide receiver Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint was arrested for reckless driving. Rosemy-Jacksaint is the latest Georgia football player to have issues with speeding, particularly after the racing incident earlier this year with Jalen Carter. The guys are baffled that Kirby Smart & company have yet to deter the dangerous behavior from their players.

Lastly, in news of the weird, Busch Lite could be aiming for a new flavor & a Hot Pocket argument gets violent.

Players to get paid for video game likeness, a rocky Big Ten TV deal & projecting the best Week 1 matchups May 22, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger kick off today’s podcast with the news surrounding paying players for their likenesses in video games, along with the Big Ten’s messy TV contract.

To start the show, Pat notes the major spring champions that have been crowned across college athletics; sports spanning from tennis, to water polo & the highly touted meat judging.

EA Sports is in the process of creating their next college football video game after an extended hiatus from producing the popular series. A new development this time around: a payment to players featured in the game will come along with the latest release. The podcast remembers Ed O’Bannon and his lawsuit that opened up a lot of these possibilities for today’s athletes.

New Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti is having to clean up a messy TV contract that was left to him by Kevin Warren. The guys detail the odd clauses in the contract and highlight that this could have been a major factor as to why Kevin Warren opted to leave college football for an executive NFL position.

In other college football news, Shemy Schembechler is out at Michigan after his social media was scanned and offensive tweets were found from his account. Schembechler issued an official apology, though it is unlikely he will be hired by a major institution again. The son of legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler was in his role as assistant recruiting director for only three days before his subsequent resignation.

In the Pac-12, Oregon is hot on the recruiting trail after news broke that they received a verbal commitment from 5-star quarterback Michael Van Buren.

Week 1 of the college football season is getting closer, so the guys go through the schedule and pick out the most interesting matchups for college football fans.

Lastly, in news of the weird, Dan may have jinxed a dog, there is a heated bounce-house rivalry & Magnus Carlsen gets a signature shoe.

Fallout from ACC meetings, Dylan Raiola chooses Georgia & SEC rivalry at Dollar General May 18, 2023
    Show notes

Dan Wetzel and SI’s Pat Forde & Ross Dellenger kick off the podcast breaking down all of the events that transpired at the latest round of ACC meetings.

Over the offseason, a select group has been formed within the ACC which has been named, “the magnificent seven”. These seven schools have been discussing the possibility of leaving the ACC and how plausible it would be to get out of their lengthy TV contracts within the conference. The podcast covers the nature of revenue sharing in the conference, along with the pros and cons of leaving. The guys are not pleased with the pattern of college coaches and administrators playing the money card at every turn and using that as an excuse for trying to leave a conference.

The University of Tennessee is exploring options for a new entertainment district outside of their football stadium. Many colleges are beginning to develop a more corporate and luxurious environment for fans to partake in the festivities. Ross worries that these new changes could take away from the traditional college tailgating experience.

Top quarterback recruit Dylan Raiola has verbally committed to the University of Georgia, thereby breaking the hearts of Nebraska fans everywhere. In the end, the longshot Cornhuskers were no match for the back-to-back champion Bulldogs.

In news of the weird, a Dollar General fell victim to anti-Alabama fans and a man tries to use a pet to avoid a ticket.
