Peace Corp with Yael Abouhalkah and Beci Bosley Mar 03, 2020

It’s a new season of Coastless and a bit of a disclaimer before we begin. You might have noticed our hiatus. It’s been quite a few months as we’ve tried to put together this season. Since Boyce and Melissa are at least pretending to be responsible adults with full-time jobs, these pods will be a bit more sporadic in the future.

We start this week talking about our travel plans as well as Melissa’s experience on the oldest currently sailing cruise ship, the Astoria.

Then, we’re joined by Yael Abouhalkah and Beci Bosley who just returned from spending two years serving in the Peace Corp in Namibia. We discuss their experience as teachers in the African country as well as what it was like to be part of the Peace Corp. They tell us more about their project building libraries in the schools where they served as well as what it was like to come back home.

Jimmy Hayes, Minaal Jun 04, 2019

Boyce and Melissa have returned from their respective Memorial Day vacations. Boyce talks about his adventures through Spain and Portugal, while Melissa discusses her experience in Fiji. Boyce then gives his rebuttal to the Disney Pod before they talk about their strategies for packing.

They then welcome Jimmy Hayes, co-founder of Minaal. Minaal makes high-end carry-on bags for people on the move. Jimmy joins Coastless from Tokyo where the company is working to grow its business.

Jimmy tells us how he was packing before he and his co-founder, Doug, decided to launch Minaal. He talks about the challenges of holding a kickstarter to launch a company as well as some of the feedback they received after they launched their product.

He also discusses what he thinks makes a quality bag and how a bag is priced. He makes the argument about why it might be cheaper in the long run to splurge on some quality luggage.

THE DISNEY POD May 21, 2019

Melissa has threatened to do this… and now, while Boyce is away traveling through Spain and Portugal, she’s doing a special pod about Disney. Melissa has invited Carly Duvall to sit in the co-host chair as they interview Scott Craven who covers Disney for the Travel Section of The Arizona Republic.

Scott tells us about some of the new happenings around Disneyland including the new land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. (The land opens at Disneyland in California first, and then in Florida in August.) He tells us what attractions you’ll find there and what’s fresh for Disney.

Carly asks Scott about his tips for bringing kids to Disney. Scott gives some strategies for making sure your whole family has a great time and also tells us his least favorite ride at Disney.

Finally, we talk about the new rules for strollers, what you can bring into the park and what you should leave at home.

Ashley Z. Hand, Cityfi May 07, 2019

This week on the pod we’re talking about the future of public transit. Melissa and Boyce discuss some of the characteristics of their favorite public transit systems. They then welcome Ashley Z. Hand, the co-founder of Cityfi and former first Chief Innovation Officer for the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

Ashley explains Cityfi’s mission to facilitate sustainable change for people and the environment. Next, there is a discussion about how new technologies like self-driving cars might affect cities in the future, as well as how we can change transportation habits, particularly in places like Kansas City where people love their cars.

Finally, we discuss one of the major holes in Kansas City’s transit system: transit between downtown and the airport.

This week on the pod, Melissa and Boyce talk about how they choose restaurants when traveling abroad. From Yelp to following great food journalists online, there are lots of opportunities to connect with the culture you are visiting through food.

They then welcome Ryan Maybee from J. Rieger & Co. He talks about how he chooses restaurants when traveling and also mentions the airline lounge where you’ll find Rieger whiskey. Maybee then discusses how he thinks being a Midwesterner has impacted his success in business. He talks about the Rieger’s role in promoting Kansas City nationwide.

Maybee gives some of his tips for his favorite wine regions of the world. Finally, he shares a crazy story about his experience mountain climbing in South America.

Boyce and Melissa kick off this week’s pod by discussing their favorite and least favorite airports, as well as their favorite airport amenties. They then welcome Geoff Stricker, the Managing Director of Edgemoor Infrastructure and Real Estate, the company that won the bid to construct the new terminal.

They ask Geoff about the bidding process, the company’s work to incorporate minority and women-owned businesses into the construction plan, and the process of learning from Kansas Citians what they want in the new terminal. He tells us the feature they added thanks to input from the public, as well as some of the other design features he hopes will help the terminal reflect the spirit of Kansas City.

What is your travel style? That’s the question we’re answering this week on the pod. Melissa and Boyce welcome Jaqui McCarthy, the CEO and co-founder of WiGo Trips.

WiGo is an app to assist you in finding and leading trips based on your travel style. Jaqui discusses how the app works as well as the different travel profiles — from early risers to avid partiers. She discusses the types of trips you’ll find on the app as well as how you can lead a trip of your own.

Jaqui was born in Honduras and moved to Kansas City as a child. She talks about how that framed her world view, as well as her perspective on travel.

This week on the pod, Boyce and Melissa discuss the recent groundbreaking for the new terminal at Kansas City International Airport. Boyce shares his impression of the atmosphere at the groundbreaking ceremony, and both Melissa and Boyce discuss some of their earliest memories of the airport.

They then welcome Michael Raucheisen, the North American Communications Manager for Icelandair. He discusses how Icelandair made its decision to enter the market in Kansas City, as well as some of the tourist highlights of Iceland. On a more serious note, he discusses how the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 has affected Icelandair’s fleet. He also talks about what Kansas City will have to show the airline before it would make its service available year-round.

This week on the pod we discuss plane etiquette. Should you take your shoes off? Can you save seats on Southwest? We delve into these hot topics before getting input from Kansas City-based flight attendant Jillian Muir.

Muir works for a major U.S. airline and talks to us about what it is like to have a fuselage be your office. She tells us the unique way she commutes to work as well as tips about the small things you can do to make your cabin crew happy.

We also get into some deeper topics like how she and her colleagues deal with unruly passengers and sexual harassment on a plane. Finally, she reveals what flight attendants know about you on flights and why you might want to be a little nicer to the gate agent or it could follow you for the rest of your flight.
