He discusses his start in coaching, influences, his pillars of coaching - attitude, prepartation, and teaching, and his passion for special teams. He also shares his keys to being able to have a successful year one as a head coach.

This was recorded at the New York State High School Football Association Clinic at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York.

Coach Toerper completed his first season as a head coach at Ithaca College. He was named as the 11th head coach of the Ithaca College football program on February 18, 2022.

In his first season as head coach in 2022, Toerper guided the Bombers to one of their most historic seasons in program history. The Bombers finished 12-1 and reached the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals. IC secured its first undefeated regular season since 1986 and claimed its first outright Liberty League title with a 31-28 win over Union. The regular season was capped off with a 34-17 win over Cortland in the 63rd Cortaca Jug Game at Yankee Stadium, which was filled by 40,232 fans. Sixteen players were named All-Liberty League, including the Offensive (A.J. Wingfield), Defensive (Matt DeSimpliciis) and Special Teams (Nicholas Bahamonde) Players of the Year.

Toerper, who is no stranger to the IC program, served as the defensive coordinator for the Bombers from 2017-19. He then departed to become the safeties coach at Division I Holy Cross for the past two seasons and contributed to turning that Crusaders defense into one of the top units in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in 2021.

Coaching Innovations - Tools to Help HS And College Coaches Win in Recruiting Jan 31, 2023
    Show notes

On today’s episode, we focus on innovations in coaching that allow for coaches on both the college and high school side to provide verifiable data and measurables through technology and AI as well as being able to analyze and better determine the fit of a prospect in a program. On both the high school and college side, technology exists to help you better understand the talent in your pipeline.

While at AFCA, Keith walked around and took a look at some of the most innovative products in the market. He identified a dozen that help make a coach more efficient, enhance player development, and ultimately add to the win column.

We sat down with representatives from Catapult, Reel Analytics, and War Room to discuss the technology they developed.

Please note that none of these companies paid to be on the podcast. This was purely Keith's research and time spent with them to learn more about what they do. Some of these you may have heard of, and some are brand new to the market, but all are innovative in their approach to helping you as a coach.

All of them were asked four questions as you will hear:

    1. How does this make me more efficient as a coach
?

    2. How does this help me develop my players
?

    3. How does this help us win
?

    4. What’s the feature that coaches like the most?

The objective is that you get a feel for these companies and what they can do for you as a coach as well as your players to help create a better game.

Reel Anayltics: Reel Analytics is Verified In_Game athleticism data powered by AI. We were joined by Cory Yates, Co-Founder and CEO of Reel Analytics. Reel Analytics’ proprietary IGA Score is a measure of in-game athleticism derived from position-specific athleticism metrics extracted by their tracking technology. To train their scoring model, they measured the in-game athleticism of over 15,000 college and NFL players for current and historical context. Each metric is weighted, contextualized by percentile rankings, and scored.

NFL scouts, NFL agents, and major college football programs integrate the IGA Score to add objectivity into their player evaluation process.

War Room: We spent time with Moose Bingham, a former kicker for BYU and former college coach. He developed a solution that handles all aspects of developing a program as well as integrates with other software you may use.

WARROOM Is the all in one software that helps to take your team to the next level. After being used by Major D1 Universities for almost a decade they are bringing our product to the High School ranks and allowing coaches to do what they love and spend more time with the players and game plans. The software includes unique features for recruiting like the trip planner and Recon which scrapes information from the internet as well as social media and through algorithms develops a player profile to better understand that player’s character and make-up.
