Camp Activities That Build Team Chemistry Jul 31, 2023
    Show notes

Today we kick off our new in-season format for the podcast with a focus on the beginning of camp.

Camp is that time of the year when players and coaches come together, united by their shared passion for the game and goals for their season.

There is a palpable sense of anticipation and excitement. But what sets camp apart for some teams is the focus on activities that transcend the typical drills and plays we study and prepare all year long.

The activities that our three guests talk about today are designed to reveal the unique personalities of the players and coaches by creating opportunities to perform and compete outside the realm of football. Beyond the X’s and O’s, the activities they share set the foundation that goes to the heart of team-building, trust-building, and personal growth.

    Today’s Coaches:

    • Randy Jackson: Long-time Texas high school head coach, who just finished a stint as the offensive coordinator of the Potsdam Royals in Germany

Innovating to Win – Patrick Daberkow, Head Coach, Concordia University, Nebraska Jul 19, 2023
    Show notes

Clear and concise communication is critical for today’s game day operations. And to acquire the systems that provide that communication, coaches spend tens of thousands of dollars of their budgets…until today.

Patrick Daberkow is the head coach at NAIA Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. In this episode, Coach Daberkow tells his story about creating The Headset App, which allows coaches an incredibly affordable way to have the entire staff on the headset on all the channels it needs.

The Quarterback Mathematical Equation – Robert Weiner, Co-OC/QB Coach, University of Toledo Jul 18, 2023
    Show notes

In this week’s clinic segment from Lauren’s First and Goal, Toledo Co-OC/QB Coach Robert Weiner shares insight into quarterback play as it relates to movement in the pocket. In the world of thousands of cool-looking drills on video and social media, Coach Weiner boils it down to essential movements to be taught, encompassing everything that a quarterback has to do in the pocket.

While the drills are simple, the movement patterns take time to develop. Coach Weiner explains the two umbrellas of QB movement – slides and spacing – as well as the four movements he has identified through study. He believes it is all a mathematical equation of if-then statements. While his perspective is through the lens of a QB coach, the approach to skill development is something all position coaches can learn from.

The Use of Technology for a More Efficient and Effective Self-Scout – AJ Antonescu, Offensive Line Coach, Lake Travis High School (TX) Jul 11, 2023
    Show notes

Longtime listeners of this podcast know that our host Keith Grabowski has always been interested in the use of technology to make our jobs more efficient and effective.

In this episode, AJ Antonescu, offensive line coach at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, joins Coach Grabowski to discuss the tools and workflows deployed by the Cavaliers to improve their self-scout and game planning, as well as the new technology platform they use to make it simple and accurate.

Self-scouting is an undervalued and underperformed function of a post-game review. It tells us a lot about our team, gives us insight into how an opponent views us, and allows us to put together a better plan for practice, carry it into the game plan, and in some states, into game-day decision making.

AJ Antonescu is entering his second season at Lake Travis, a six-time Texas state champion. The program is currently led by head coach Hank Carter. Since Coach Carter took over as head coach in 2010, the Cavaliers have won three state championships with a record of 155-26 over that time.
