The Stories of the Pioneers of the Clean Energy Transition in North America with Tom Weirich #EP 115 Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

When you start something big like the clean energy transition, you have to think big and take risks. If you're an energy professional, want to become one, or want to understand how ripples turn into tsunamis, you'll enjoy today's guest, Tom Weirich. Tom is the author of "We Took the Risk," a book that chronicles the pioneers who made wind, solar, and energy storage happen in the US.

Tom Weirich is the head of Marketing & Stakeholder Relations at EDP Renewables. His book, We Took the Risk: The Stories Behind the Early Risk-Takers in the U.S. Renewable Energy Industry and the Leadership Traits That Made Them a Success, is a testament to the passion, intelligence, vision, and moxie that built the foundation for the clean energy transition.

Tom has been a facilitator in building collaboration and connecting key players in the global renewable energy industry for over 18 years, having worked with teams that have closed over 243 renewable energy transactions with a combined enterprise value of $66 billion. He was previously Vice President of Corporate Relations at the American Council On Renewable Energy (ACORE) where he worked for 12 years. He also served under the Obama Administration twice in honorary roles, advising both the Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative on renewable energy trade and manufacturing policies.

We Took the Risk dives into the personal journeys of 25 executives who, through their own combination of traits, took on the challenges of an early U.S. renewable energy industry. This book lets you view the industry's beginnings as if you were there, in lockstep with these entrepreneurial leaders as they sift through decisions that would forever impact the trajectory of renewables in the U.S.

On this episode of Clean Power Hour, Tom joins Tim to discuss this book, why he wrote the book, the executives featured in the book, and much more.

If you’re looking to get inspired in your current work in renewables or looking to launch into a career in renewables and figure out a game plan, this is the episode for you. Don’t miss it!

Helping Solar Installers Grow Exponentially with Kiya Segni, CEO of Aduu Solar Engineering #EP 114 Nov 09, 2022
    Show notes

Our guest today is Kiya Segni, the founder and CEO of Aduu Solar Engineering. Aduu solar provides exceptional solar construction permit plansets within a fast turnaround and quality workmanship.

Contact Kiya at www.aduusolar.com for a free consultation. Enter "BHON1ZA" in the "Have a coupon?" field to get 25% off your first order!

We're tripling the solar industry in the next five years, so speed is vital for the installers and EPCs that form the backbone of the solar industry. Enter Aduu Solar Engineering with their quick turnaround, white-glove concierge service that allows installers to focus on what they do best, rolling trucks and crews as fast as they can, installing gigawatts of distributed solar that is cleaning the grid one rooftop at a time.

Kiya Segni, co-founder and CEO, parlayed his career in cybersecurity at the Dept of Defense into founding and growing a small solar engineering and design firm. Aduu has carved out a customer base in residential solar by offering 24-hr turnaround, high-quality construction plansets that get his customer's projects permitted the first time, every time.

Kiya came to the US as a recent high school graduate and his years of catholic school in Ethiopia paid off. While much of his youth in rural Africa was spent chopping wood and carrying water, it was his sharp mind and passion for technology that propelled him toward a future in the United States.

When he graduated high school with honors he relocated to the US, following his father who had settled in the Washington DC area as a political refugee. Kiya was soon accepted and got a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland and shortly thereafter went to work at the DOD. But his heart was in clean energy and the energy transition would not wait.

Ten years after he moved to the US he established Aduu Solar with his friend and fellow Ethiopian, Waqgari Regassa, a software engineering graduate from George Mason University. The two had become fast friends in the DC area and shared a passion for sustainability and technology.

Kiya Segni moved to the United States aged 18 from his home country Ethiopia due to political tensions. He joined college to study Electrical engineering and that was when he got introduced to the solar industry. He got an internship in a solar company and got to work for them for some time when he learned how to do PV designs. After some time he quit his job there to start his own company, Aduu Solar and Engineering.

In this episode of the Clean Power Hour, Kiya joins Tim Montague to discuss his background, why and when he started Aduu solar, the experience of a start-up company in the solar industry, and much more.

    Key Takeaways

    1. What is Kiya’s background?
    2. How he and his partner started Aduu solar and Engineering?
    3. What the experience is of a start-up solar company.
    4. What is Aduu solar business model?
    5. How do they ensure customer satisfaction?
    6. How does Aduu solar ensure their projects adhere to state and AHJ requirements?
    7. What does the future look like for Aduu solar on the greater scale of the Clean Energy transition?

    Show notes

Our guest today is Anthony Star, the former Director of the Illinois Power Agency (IPA). The IPA is the authority that oversees renewable energy implementation in Illinois. It was established in 2007 by Public Act 95-0481. In 2017, they established the Illinois Solar program as mandated by the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA). The Illinois solar program has risen from 80 MW in 2017 to over 1.5 GW of solar installations in 2021.

In Sept 2021, the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) became the law of the land and greatly enhanced our Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and solar programs. CEJA is tasked to establish rebate and grant programs for electric vehicles and charging stations and oversee the phase-out of fossil fuel-fired electrical generation units in Illinois.
They aim to get Illinois to 100% renewable energy and achieve 46% renewable energy by 2030, including over 17,000 MW of new solar energy and 6,300 MW of new wind energy.

Anthony Star was appointed as the Director of the Illinois Power Agency in 2013. In his role there, he oversaw the procurement of electricity for Illinois default service customers and the implementation of the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard. Previously he worked as a Policy Advisor to two Chairmen of the Illinois Commerce Commission and worked for a Chicago-area non-profit on energy and sustainability.

On this episode of the Clean Power Hour, Anthony joins Tim Montague to discuss the updates made to the Illinois Solar Program and what the future for Illinois Solar looks like, and more.

    Key Takeaways
