Show notes

You may have seen the viral video of the confrontation at Arizona State University's multicultural center between some non-White students and some White students with an anti-Biden shirt and a "Police Lives Matter" laptop sticker. This video has been shared on right-wing media as an example of anti-Whiteness or reverse racism with even Marjorie Taylor Greene commenting about it. Well on this week's episode, the 3 women of color all sat down on Civic Cipher to discuss the incident in detail...foregoing opportunities to respond via other media outlets. This discussion is timely, potent, and necessary. For the full video of the incident, find @civiccipher on Instagram or search Civic Cipher on Facebook. For more from Sarra, check @sarratekola on Instagram. Editor's note: our audio was slightly compromised this week but in no way does it diminish the content of the interview.

Today's episode discusses the Oregon School District that banned BLM and LGBTQ clothing and signage a few months ago. They are now making headlines because their students were involved in a Snapchat-based mock slave auction where students discussed prices they would pay for their Black classmates. We also discuss whether or not the NFL should continue to play the Black National Anthem (Lift Every Voice and Sing) in addition to playing the National Anthem. For our Way Black History Fact, we discuss the well-documented racist history of the National Anthem, and our Ebony Excellence shout out goes to Lil Nas X! Check it out!

In today's episode, we discuss what is sometimes referred to as "the Black face of White supremacy." We discuss Larry Elder, Candace Owens, and other prominent, far-right Black personalities and their role in establishing and maintaining a narrative that allows many conservative and moderate White people to leave their prejudices unchecked. We also hold a critical examination of the murder of Kawasaki Trawick who was murdered by the NYPD in 2019. Because the footage was finally released, we can try and make sense of what happened and determine whether or not increased training has created any lasting departmental or procedural changes. For our B.A.B.A. segment, we stand in solidarity with our Native American brothers and sisters and discuss the #landback initiative.

We are 1-year old! Today we decided to look back at some of the more positive outcomes of stories we've discussed during our first year on air! Naturally, we looked at the Derek Chauvin verdict and the Biden/Harris election, but we also took time to discuss the unexpected outcomes of the Elijah McClain story from Aurora Colorado, the massive donations to HBCU institutions by Mackenzie Scott, and the New Black Wall Street in Georgia. Above all else, we appreciate all of our listeners, donors, and the programmers around the country for seeing the importance and relevance of this program and making it a part of your weekly routine! Onward to year two!

In today's episode, we conduct a critical examination of some of the myths purported to be statistics by many right-wing media outlets in this country. This includes the 13/50 rule...a falsehood that suggests that Black people are responsible for 50% of all violent crime in the U.S. We also examine the relationships that retail stores have with their Black customer base. This includes Target developing surveillance programs with local police departments that ultimately further criminalized or otherwise expelled Black and Brown individuals at a rate of 80% and Whites at a rate of 20%. Furthermore we discuss Walmart locking up only Black hair care products in its stores while leaving all other products available to shoppers to freely choose without the aid of an employee. Our BABA cites Fred Savage and his role in the new Wonder Years TV program and our Ebony Excellence discusses Dr. Dwandalyn Reece and the Smithsonian for creating the anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap that explains why Hip-Hop conquered the world.

In today's episode, we discuss cancel culture and its efficacy in our quest to create a more equitable country for all of us citizens. We spend some time telling a story about Dog the Bounty Hunter and how it's possible for some people to make mistakes, learn, grow, and become better people. We also discuss how the Feds were deliberately targeting BLM protesters to disrupt the movement of 2020. Our Way Black History Fact is about Mexico serving as a safe haven for runaway slaves in the 1800s.

In today's episode, we discuss the results of the 2020 Census and the population shift away from a majority-White America. We also discuss a shooting in San Bernadino County where an officer executed Daverion Deauntre Kinard after a suspected robbery while he was in a port-a-potty holding a lighter. Our Ebony Excellence is dedicated to Ava DuVernay for creating an opportunity for Levar Burton after he was snubbed as the replacement host for Jeopardy. Finally our B.A.B.A. goes to the woman who helped the Jamaican athlete reach his event by paying for his taxi in Japan.

In today's episode, we discuss an instance in Michigan where officers pulled guns on and subsequently handcuffed a Black realtor, homebuyer, and his son after mistaking them for trespassers. We also discuss an Ohio court that sentenced two women (one White and one Black) to very different punishments one day apart from each other for essentially the same crime. We reflect again on how policing and the criminal justice system favors White criminals over all others--especially Black people. For our Ebony Excellence, we celebrate Beyonce and Jay Z becoming the new faces of Tiffany & Co. and our B.A.B.A. segment informs about August being Black Business Month.

In today's episode, we own up to a journalistic misstep where we shared a video with our social media followers and subsequently needed to set the record straight after seeing the same incident from another perspective and in longer format. We also review an incident of an officer kicking a handcuffed woman in the face in Atlanta. Our Way Black History Fact highlights the life and legacy of the recently departed Bob Moses, and our Ebony Excellence is dedicated to the movie trailer for King Richard...a Black man from Compton, CA who motivated and nurtured two of his children into becoming Venus and Serena Williams.
