    Civic Cipher

Civic Cipher is a weekly radio show created to foster allyship for social justice. Hosted by Ramses Ja and Q. Ward, this show is dedicated to empowering Black and Brown voices, allowing them to engage directly with diverse populations across the country. Self-determination is critical to securing a future free of oppressive systems, and Civic Cipher exists to facilitate discussions toward this end. Furthermore, Civic Cipher seeks to inform non-POC allies who may not be privy to these types of discussions and optics. Finally, Civic Cipher seeks to provide long-form conversations in spaces where there is often a lack of significant resources, potent dialogue, or the necessary engagement for facilitating a healthy and productive civil discourse.  FB/Instagram/Fanbase: @civiccipher

Naturally we make comparisons to Black and Brown people who are seldom afforded such consideration. We also take a moment to give Erin Jackson who took first place in the women’s 500m speed skating race her flowers.

In the second half of the show, we revisit a story about some recent guests (Sarra, Mimi, and Mastaani) and their current standing with ASU. We also discuss the eroding support for the BLM movement and what it means to really keep that energy. Alexandre Dumas is the person we highlight for our Way Black History Fact considering that while he is well known for his works such as The Three Musketeers, and The Count of Monte Cristo, it is a lesser known fact that he was Black.

    Show notes

    Send us a Text Message.

There is a sad and well-documented history of prejudice and anti-Black sentiment associated with the food that still finds its way into Black life today. We share some examples of this in hopes of preventing some social faux pas!

Our guest, Leezah Sun is a politician of Chinese descent who is passionate about building stronger community ties between these groups. In our discussions, we broach the subject of the Model Minority Myth, factors that contributed to the degradation of these two communities, and things we can all do regardless of race that will ultimately support and empower our AAPI brothers and sisters. Our Way Black History Fact is the story of Yuri Kochiyama, the activist that was photographed cradling the head of Malcolm X immediately after he was shot. Civic Cipher 102321 Dr. Camilla Westenberg on Critical Race Theory Oct 23, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us a Text Message.

In today's episode, we are joined by former educator Dr. Camilla Westenberg whose claim to fame is being the first person to create an accredited Hip Hop literature class at the community college level. With so much being said about Critical Race Theory being taught in schools, it felt right to have a decades-long educator with us for this deep dive into CRT. We discuss exactly what it is, the concerns surrounding it, and what difference it could make in the lives of our students.

    Civic Cipher 100921 Ramses Ja & Q Ward Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us a Text Message.

Today we discussed the oft-practiced "ready-fire-aim" approach used by police. We examine what it means to be a public servant/peace officer, and how when officers fall short of this, people sometimes pay with their lives. The example we use in today's episode is from Idaho Springs, CO where a deaf man Brady Mistic was beaten, arrested, and imprisoned by officers for not complying with orders (again, he is deaf). We also ask the question "How young should a child be before they are taught about race?' We revisit Critical Race Theory and its merits. Our Way Black History Fact is about some of the ways that prisoners were used for profit throughout the history of the United States. Our Ebony Excellence segment is dedicated to NASCAR champion Bubba Wallace.
