    Show notes

Greetings, congregation! This week, John and Jed discuss the finer points in life, namely doing a super-deep dive on Breaking Bad stemming from John's recent re-viewing. Is it the greatest show ever? Probably. Then in a very special interview, Jed talks to Russell Holbrook- formerly of mid-90s Tooth & Nail band Joe Christmas, about his most recent book/memoir- "Heroin is the Answer: A Memoir of What I Can Remember". Russell takes us through the early days in the band, the dissolution, and what that did to his life. Russell began a years-long journey through heroin addiction and alcoholism, and came out clean on the other side. churchandotherdrugs@gmail.com patreon.com/churchandotherdrugs https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44232045-heroin-is-the-answer

John and Jed start the show off by talking about the uber creepy, uber real Chinese social scoring system..revealing the perks and penalties of things like cheating on online video games. They also discuss what an addict's paradise would look like...and it's pretty similar to a Circle K. Then, Dan Smotz comes on (AGAIN...geez) to talk about his new crowd-funded documentary- The Moon, The Myth, The Legend. What's it all about? Well, none other than one of the granddaddies of all conspiracy theories-- was the moon landing faked? The answer may suprise you. 112 - Live from Dallas with David Hamilton from RYFO and AJ Mestre! Feb 18, 2019
    Show notes

Greetings, Congregation! This week is a fun episode recorded LIVE (except it wasn't aired live..so..) from Dallas, TX! Jed was in town for a conference, and just happened to stay at the same airBnB as David Hamilton..the operations manager of RYFO..and organization looking to bridge the gap between musicians and christianity. David talks about what it's like to work as a full-time missionary, how he fell into that role, and what RYFO is all about. AJ Maestre also joins the group, and we end up talking about our favorite horror movies. Oh yeah, and Ryan Davis says hello as well. Be sure and check out RYFO on the interwebs and support this awesome cause! ryfo.org churchandotherdrugs@gmail.com patreon.com/churchandotherdrugs RYFO began as a college-dorm-room dream in January 2004, and was made a reality in January 2009 with the launch of our first website. Since January 2009, the missionaries involved in RYFO’s missions agency ‘RYFO Network‘, have served the needs of thousands of touring musicians with practical assistance, free meals, beds to sleep in, care-packs, prayer, and friendship. The original vision to serve touring musicians was birthed from seeing Christ-following loved ones struggle through the unique pressures, temptations, and realities that come with life on the road. Today, though we still hold a significant desire to see Christ-following musicians on the road cared for, God has also deepened our desire to see the Good News of Jesus’ love shown and shared with all musicians (local and touring) that do not have a personal relationship with him, and those that may have been disenfranchised from the Church for one reason or another. We long to be a part of the Father’s reconciliation plan, while continuing to see the needs of Christ-following musicians supported as well. Our heart is to see musicians discipled and to see God’s glory reflected through their lives.

110 - Lowell Macgregor and the Taylor Made Retreat Feb 04, 2019
    Show notes

Greetings, congregation! John joins the show after a long break to talk about the super bowl and whether or not humanity is on the brink of destruction. They also discuss our brother podcast Dopey being on a recent episode of This American Life and how it reminds Jed of what's going on in his personal life. Then, Jed talks to Lowell Macgregor from the Taylor Made Retreat. Lowell tells his story of debauchery to sobriety, how he moved from setting fires as a 14 year old to running a spiritual retreat with 29 years sober. Lowell hit some low points in his sobriety as well, and the two have a sobering discussion about that. taylormaderetreat.org churchandotherdrugs@gmail.com patreon.com/churchandotherdrugs

    Show notes

Greetings, congregation! Thanks for joining us on another week, and excuse my absence from last week! I had to recharge. This week, Dan Smotz from The System Is Down podcast joins Jed for a little back-and-forth, where they discuss recent news and "the Great Molasses Flood"...it's some much needed history. Then, Jed gets a chance to talk to Jesse Harvey, the founder of The Church Of Safe Injection. Jesse's organization seeks to end stigmas against addicts and provide safe, evidence based treatment and support to those currently addicted. Jesse believes "no one deserves to die because they use drugs", and I wholeheartedly agree. Jesse started operating a needle exchange from his vehicle, and the organization has grown to 22 chapters around the country. 107 - Booka Nile from Make Them Suffer talks mental health and the music world! Jan 07, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to 2019 Congregation! Thanks for sticking with us all this time. On today's episode, Besh and Jed hash out the finer points of life-- namely Oregon considering legalization of mushrooms and whether or not that means we can now take them (hint: no). We also talk about the resurgence of the R. Kelly controversy and how Besh hated "Bandersnatch" but loved "Bird Box". Ugh. Then on a VERY special interview, Jed talks to Booka Nile- keyboardist/vocalist from the metal band Make Them Suffer. Booka began her career working in the field of mental health; she started with people with disabilities and brain trauma, and moved on to manage a mental health hostel. Booka talks about how she practices self-care, burnout, and how her life changed when she joined a world-famous touring metal band. Mum wasn't thrilled at first. Booka has recently started a mental health vlog, and we highly recommend it. You can also catch her on tour feb/mar with Born of Osiris and Chelsea Grin!
