    Episode 407 - Davenport Ed Apr 16, 2012
    Show notes

OK, I admit it, I do get carried away sometimes and this band did it to me again. We have booked them live several times and finally got them in to record a Podcast. These guys are crazy good. as you will hear, we had a blast recording this show.Formerly known as Johnny Perona The Faque Brothers, Davenport Ed is a Chicago based band who draws its influences from a wide variety of musical genres and whiskeys. Come check out a show soon! Formed in May of 2005 as a backing band for Johnny's first solo release entitled "Downsized and Paralyzed" the band enjoyed a great sense of energy and excitement from the first 8 song performance. Since then, a record was recorded in 2008 entitled "Family Portrait" which features the core members of the group and several other talented Chicago musicians like Leslie Beukelman (Information Superhighway), Katie Wiegman (Algernon) and Jaik Willis. We have recently added Jimmy Perona as our lead guitarist, as our good friend Dave Miller has moved to NY in an effort to further his sure to be successful music career. You can purchase our 2nd record, "Time Well Spent" on any major digital distribution market.

    Episode 406 - Esh TheSinger Apr 10, 2012
    Show notes

Esh and her band came in to the studio and captivated my heart and soul. What an amazing singer backed by an equally amazing band. This show ROCKS!!!!Gaining the majority of her industry experience writing and touring with other artist as a background vocalist which eventually led to major label interest in her music career. Chicago's Alt/Rocker Esh makes a splash taking center stage. With her dynamic, emphatic delivery, Esh moves hearts and hips; with her glam/punk rock sartorial style. In 2010 Esh was blessed to make top 60 on American Idol - Season 10. Esh explains, "my own achievements bring me joy, however my true passion is helping others realize their own strength through the songs I sing. This great accomplishment has opened doors for me as a independent artist." Not to forget Esh's four piece band, packing hard-rock compositions, powerful guitar-, bass-, and drum-driven punches with just enough sauce to allow the pint size rocker the freedom to stir up a host of emotions from the affectionate to the aggressive.

Episode 405 - Ben Joseph and the Mathematics Apr 01, 2012
    Show notes

Ben Joseph and The Mathematics came into the studio and absolutely mesmerized me. I lost all track of time as I immersed myself in their beautiful music. After the success of his last release Shoot the Piano Player, Ben Joseph and (his band) The Mathematics have recently released their new album, SOLACE! This new album marks the group's most ambitious studio project to date (it better be, for what we paid for it), combining diverse, expansive instrumentation (by that we mean horns, strings and woodwinds played through guitar amps, two drumsets, the whole frickin kitchen sink) with a solid grounding of captivating songwriting (as in, we don't just, like, jam, dude!) The Mathematics can be seen around Chicago sharing stages with bands like Glittermouse, Jennifer Hall, Treehouse, and Adam Fitz (you know who those bands are, right? Of course you do. You're hip.)Delivering a polished, yet hard-hitting indie-pop sound that lies somewhere between Wilco, Dr. Dog and Elliot Smith, Ben Joseph and The Mathematics bring a soulful depth to songs you've never heard but feel like you've known your whole life.

    Episode 404 - The Staving Chain Mar 21, 2012
    Show notes

Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, The Staving Chain members Dooley Wilson, Todd Albright, John Roundcity, Cassie Morrin remain true to that traditional Delta Blues sound. The true-to-roots Delta-styled blues Quartet recently played a venue in their home base of Toledo, struggling to hear their guitar-dobro-mandolin accompaniment through an omnipresent wall of droning bass-ey feedback on the monitors. Fortuitously, the modest crowd out front was none the wiser, and the trio was warmed-up enough to handle even the direst sound-system shortcomings. "I told the guy – who's a decent promoter, actually – this band, we don't have anything that ‘plugs in'; my guy on guitar is playing a 1928 Stella… we don't have output jacks." Conceived in the living room of an estate once owned by the Purple Gang, and bearing a moniker based on a painfully obscure Afro-American folk figure, The Staving Chain drags Mississippi's 1930s Delta blues culture kicking and caterwauling into today's Great American Rustbelt. "We informally record our practice sessions sometimes," Wilson muses, "using some little device with a bottom-of-the-barrel condenser mic, and the shit sounds like an old Paramount ‘78." Wilson here references one of the greatest purveyors of 78 rpm ‘race records' of the late twenties and thirties. The Quartet features Dooley Wilson of Boogaloosa Prayer and Henry June fame providing most of the vocals and playing slide on the resophonic guitar; his long-time co-conspirator John Roundcity on harmonica, mandolin, Cassie Morrin on washboard, and Todd William Albright, a.k.a. the Little Dirty Bastard, a.k.a. Baby Jesus, on strictly-vintage guitar accompaniment http://www.dangerlimitedsound.com http://www.sonicbids.com/thestavingchain

    Episode 401 - Donna Frost 2011 Mar 10, 2012
    Show notes

Donna Frost my dear friend from Nashville came in late last summer for some live gigs and we recorded this Podcast. We decided to save it for this visit.Tonight Donna and her Chicago CAU session band will be knocking down the doors in Schiller Park at Kicker's Bar I highly recommend this show. Last night they played Phyllis' Musical Inn and they kicked ass and took no prisoners.

    Episode 400 - Swizzle Steve Mar 07, 2012
    Show notes

Last week we brought in a friend and one of the hardest working booking agents in the Chicago music scene, Swizzle Steve. While we are decades apart in age, we seem to have very similar views, especially when it comes to politics. Steve, almost single handedly has brought back the protest song with his pointedly directed jibes at our current political scene. His songs are excellent. It was a joy to have him in the studio. You will have the opportunity to see him live this Saturday at the Beat Kitchen Show starts at 10 PM and He's first up. See you there. The name swizzlesteve was given to me because of my band Swizzle Tree. We still play shows but no album release is planned for the future. My experience in Swizzle Tree gave me the tools I needed to keep booking shows, consulting artists and planning events. My main rooms for live music are Goose Island Wrigleyville, The Tonic Room, Lasalle Power Company Double Door. I have also done showcases at Lincoln Hall, The Beat Kitchen, Viper Alley Schubas. I'm interested in building a relationship with all the hardworking bands out there who are making amazing music.
