    Episode 496 - The Thriftones Jun 19, 2013
    Show notes

They hang TV's in trees, they rehearse in a frozen attic, their tour vehicle is Townes Van Country, and they play familiar sounding music that you've never heard. They are Thriftones. With a sound driven as much by the groovy and often dark tones as it is by the lyrical content, the new self titled album captures the band at an exciting time. After forming in late 2011, the band played nearly every weekend to earn enough money to produce their debut record. The band, based in Milwaukee, has been winning fans over with eclectic set lists and high energy performances that come to life on the stage. The four piece group draws it's inspiration from an endless pool of musical genres. You might feel a funky 70's jam end and a weird sonic freak-out begin. A spastic and aggressive rocker lead into a crooning waltz. They have played the outdoor festival stage, the cozy coffeehouse, the gallery night art opening and a lot of those clubs you find yourself in after midnight.

    Episode 495 - Kevin Lee Jun 17, 2013
    Show notes

Fans of modern guitar pop/rock may recognize Kevin Lee from his days as Kevin Lee and the Lonesome City Kings. Signed to MCA in 1992, the band's first single "Standing in the Line of Fire" was chosen for an NBA All Stars Video and used in the movie "A Dangerous Woman." Several years and several records later, Lee is back with his current band, Kevin Lee and the Kings. The 10 songs on the band's upcoming album "Breakout" are well worth a listen for their big hooks, chunky guitars and sheer joy to rock out to. From "Gold Digger" with its quirky low-key verse to the catchy "Too Little Too Late," Lee's songs will stay in your head and keep you coming back for more. A native of Chicago, Lee released his first solo album "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" in 1998 on Bubblehaus Records. In 2002 Kevin releasedthe critically acclaimed CD "Loaded" on Chicago-based Big Blast Records. In 2006 Lee released "Flip the Switch" on Sigus Records. Co-producing with producer/engineer Josh Shapera brought a new modern rock edge to Lee's songs. In 2010 Lee released "Dusk Till Dawn" on Sigus Records featuring his trademark songwriting with big hooks, chunky guitars, and melodies that can't be forgotten. The song "Time Won't Stand Still" hit #1 at WMWX in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lee was voted best new artist by Fireworks Magazine UK in 2007, toured as opening act playing multiple 20,000 plus seat arenas for REO, Cheap Trick, Pearl Jam, Lou Gramm, and Matthew Sweet.

Episode 494 - Ami Saraiya and The Outcome Jun 10, 2013
    Show notes

Here's another lost but now found show by Ami Saraiya. This was such a fun night of music by this brilliant Lady. I am so glad that I found the show. Enjoy!!!There's drama when Ami Saraiya and her band, The Outcome, take the stage. It's a dark atmosphere, but it swings baby-a worldly staging of folk punk and jazz cabaret. And amongst the accordion, the violin and the guitars, it's Ami's sultry voice that recalls Piaf and Holiday which takes the spotlight. Then, there are the song-stories—often saturnine, often employing magical realism. The 7 piece, Chicago based music ensemble Ami Saraiya The Outcome is described by Jessica Hopper of the Chicago Tribune as "Creative energy with intensity. Saraiya's vintage cabaret is drama in bold relief, swinging from playful to maudlin in a single measure." Featuring Ami Saraiya on vocals, accordion, guitar, two backing vocalists, violin, upright bass, electric guitar, and drums, the ensemble plays a combination of cabaret and balkan-indy pop that will leave your head spinning. The ensemble's genre-defying original tunes have the dark flair of Tom Waits, Bjork, St. Vincent and Edith Piaf. "Ami Saraiya conjures up the kind of Old World Europhilia that any cabaret-pop songwriter worth her kazoo solo should. But the Chicago-based artist also differentiates herself with elements of fragmented indie rock and some truly wild vocal contortionism. She knows when to straighten her delivery for fuller emotional impact, too, pulling her Left Bank torch songs and Balkan accordion hop back to the here and now" (Flavorpill) Ami is a veteran of the Chicago eclectic and varied music scene—before she released her first solo album, Archeologist, Ami was a member of pop collective Radiant Darling and RB band Pelvic Delta, and has toured locally and regionally with appearances at The Hideout, The Empty Bottle, Metro and Double Door. A classically-trained pianist and a former music major at Indiana University, Ami also plays accordion and the guitar. Ami performs live with her band, The Outcome.

    Episode 488 - Bad Bad Meow May 21, 2013
    Show notes

Critics have compared Bad Bad Meow's style with the likes of Violent Femmes, The White Stripes, and The Pixies-all revolutionary artists in their own right, and an honor to be mentioned among. But where many artists fall victim to replicating their musical predecessors, Bad Bad Meow emulates only the vision and approach required of a Jack White to continue breaking boundaries. Using an array of auxiliary instruments coursing over hook after catchy hook, BBM straps the boots on once again to kick down a few more walls with their third release, EP "Run Through the Middle." Recorded at Chicago's world-renown Engine Studios (Andrew Bird, Iron Wine, Modest Mouse), this collection of tracks starts with a kick, downshifts and then kicks even harder. Bad Bad Meow has solidified its voice since bringing some Carolina twang to the Chicago scene, and it's not an inside voice.
