Divining how Golden State will respond to Boston's Game 1 win with Tommy Call III Jun 04, 2022
    Show notes

Given the number of outliers we saw from both the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors in alternating quarters of Game 1 of their 2022 NBA Finals series on Thursday, we can assume that however the two teams approach Game 2, the outcome will not resemble the previous contest's.

The Celtics role players will likely shoot worse, and Jayson Tatum better; Draymond Green and the Dubs will defend Boston better, and Stephen Curry will probably not put up the bulk of his offense in just one quarter. But how will the Celtics get their All-NBA forward going, and how will the Warriors adapt? Will we see more Payton Pritchard and less Grant Williams? Can we expect to say Golden State's Gary Payton II in Game 2?

To get to the bottom of what might be coming down the pike for Boston in the next installment of the NBA Playoffs, the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast got together with the editor of our sister site Warriors Wire, Tommy Call III.

On this episode of the Lab, Call and our usual hosts Justin Quinn and Cameron Tabatabaie dive into what adjustments we might see come Sunday evening -- and how what we saw changed our opinions on how who might win it all.

Previewing Celtics-Dubs and the evolution of space in the NBA with Mike Prada Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

In many ways, the 2022 NBA Finals series between the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors has been a series a long time in coming. From the golden age of the 1960s pitting Bill Russell against Wilt Chamberlain up to the present 3-point revolution sparked in large part because of the Dubs and the defense the Celtics have built to slow, the way these two teams have played one another serves as a tangible history of the league's evolution.

It just so happens that The Athletic's Mike Prada recently finished a book that traces the path of that evolution. In "Spaced Out: How the NBA's Three-Point Revolution Changed Everything You Thought You Knew About Basketball," the two teams currently facing off in the finals play a key role, making Prada an ideal interlocutor to break down how this series might play out.

On this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, Prada joins your usual hosts Alex Goldberg and Justin Quinn to talk about his new book, how it is entangled with the basketball we are about to see unfold, and what we ought to expect from this Celtics-Dubs battle.

If you want a deeper understanding of how the game has changed over time without having to take intensive courses on NBA tactics, or just want to know who we all think will win the 2022 title, this is the pod for you.

The Heat beaten, a look back on the path to the finals ahead of a Warriors showdown May 31, 2022
    Show notes

Even though it very much looked like it might not have happened in the waning seconds of the Boston Celtics' Game 7 win over the Miami Heat in the 2022 Eastern Conference semifinals as Jimmy Butler's last-second 3-pointer followed its arc on the way to the front of the rim, the Celtics are in fact headed to the 2022 NBA Finals starting next Thursday.

Their first trip back there since 2010 and the first trip ever for every member of the current team's roster, it felt right to take a last look back at the series with the Heat, Jayson Tatum's new (literally) hardware, and the season more generally before getting our minds ready for the fight for Banner 18 against the Golden State Warriors.

On this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, we take stock of the team's path to the finals and even take a peek at the series ahead of a full preview later this week.

Join your usual hosts of Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn as we pay tribute to the journey Boston has completed so far while getting ready for the final, hardest steps ahead.

Diving into whether Boston can close out their East Finals series vs. the Miami Heat in Game 6 with Gary Gulman May 26, 2022
    Show notes

The Boston Celtics are a win away from the 2022 NBA Finals with a 3-2 series lead over the Miami Heat in the 2022 NBA Eastern Conference finals with the opportunity to close out the Heat on their home court of TD Garden.

Do the Celtics have the horses after having injured starters Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III play through swelling and discomfort? Can Miami dig deep and find a way to beat Boston on the road to force a decisive Game 7 in Florida? And how to sort through things sports-related in a week that quite understandably has our minds elsewhere?

In this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, comedian, noted Celtics fan, and friend of the pod Gary Gulman dives into the post-Game 5 aftermath to see what we can prognosticate about the rest of the East finals.

Join your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn as we talk all things Eastern Conference finals and beyond.

Are there any adjustments left? Exploring the Boston-Miami Heat East finals with Kyle Russell May 24, 2022
    Show notes

The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat appear to be trading haymakers in their Eastern Conference finals series as each team adjusts to how the other played in the game prior, and bodies are turning up with the sort of damage one might expect in a match between two heavyweights, both teams looking at playing Game 5 without key players being available.

After a 102-82 blowout of the Heat at TD Garden on Monday, the series shifts back to Florida -- have the Celtics found the right way to play in order to put the Heat in their proverbial rearview mirror? Or can we expect Miami to unlock another gear despite all their dings and bruises? Are there any adjustments left for either team beyond simply playing better?

This episode, we are joined by Kyle Russell of the Off The Glass podcast "Heaters Gonna Heat" to get as unbiased a view as we could for what we ought to expect from both teams in Game 5 and beyond.

Join your usual hosts Justin Quinn, Alex Goldberg, and Cameron Tabatabaie as we dive deep into Game 5 futures ahead of Wednesday's big game.

Assessing the East finals vs. Miami 3 games in with Jeff Zillgitt May 22, 2022
    Show notes

The Boston Celtics are seeing a familiar pattern develop in their Eastern Conference finals series with the Miami Heat that in some ways resembles what unfolded in the last round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs with the Milwaukee Bucks, each team trading wins in the earlier part of the series.

But unlike the Bucks, the margins of victory in this series are substantial, and so far injuries -- and players playing through them -- have been an important factor as well. The health of Celtics like Robert Williams III and Marcus Smart, as well as Heat players like Jimmy Butler, PJ Tucker, and Kyle Lowry will be critical to winning Game 4 and beyond.

To make sense of the series so far and get a handle on what might be coming in the rest of the East Finals, host of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast Justin Quinn is joined by USA TODAY's Jeff Zillgitt to talk all things Eastern Conference finals.

In this episode, we broke down what went into the Heat's Game 3 win, how both teams might adjust, the importance of health, as well as a look across to the Western Conference finals series between the Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies.

How can Boston respond to getting smacked by the Miami Heat in Game 2? May 19, 2022
    Show notes

The Boston Celtics started off their Eastern Conference finals series against the Miami Heat with an excellent first half, only to get punched hard in the mouth in the game's third quarter by the Heat's increased physicality.

The team crumpled like a wet cardboard box until they found their legs too late in the fourth quarter to mount a successful comeback, squandering an opportunity to steal a win on the road with Miami point guard Kyle Lowry unavailable. What can the Celtics do in Game 2 to adjust, if anything? How is the health of Marcus Smart, Al Horford, and Robert Williams III? Could a COVID outbreak do more damage to the team's roster at nearly the worst possible time?

In this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, hosts Cameron Tabatabaie and Justin Quinn try and predict what might be coming down the pike in this series in terms of both health and potential adjustments.

The Celtics get a shot at redemption on Friday with a potential return to action for Smart to boot -- but does this team have enough to win in Miami? Listen to hear our perspective on what we expect to see.

Can Boston beat the Miami Heat banged up? May 17, 2022
    Show notes

Any NBA postseason series is about matchups and adjustments, and in the case of the Boston Celtics' 2022 Eastern Conference semifinals series with the No. 1 seeded Miami Heat, they will likely prove critical elements to the team that finds a way to advance to the finals. The Celtics own the best defense in the league in the 2021-22 regular season, but the Heat are not far behind at No. 4 in that department, and both teams have an adaptable style of play and solid coaching staff to guide their respective teams on both ends.

We also knew coming into the series that health was going to be a factor with each team's lead point guard dealing with injuries sustained earlier in the postseason -- Marcus Smart with a sprained foot he hurt in Game 7 against the Brooklyn Nets in the East semis, and Kyle Lowry with lingering hamstring issues.

We did not, however, know that veteran big man Al Horford was going to end up back in the NBA's health and safety protocols, or that center Robert Williams III is reportedly likely and able to play significant minutes against Miami.

On this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, your hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn do their best to predict the East finals matchup between Boston and Miami, even as they learn about Boston's injury woes mid-recording.

Buckle up, this is going to be a rough ride for the Celtics.

Recapping an epic Game 6 vs. Bucks, looking ahead to Game 7 for the Celtics with Jack Simone May 14, 2022
    Show notes

The Boston Celtics defied the odds and forced a Game 7 at TD Garden on Sunday with a 109-95 win over star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, evening up the Eastern Conference semifinals series at 3 games each.

What went right for the Celtics to make it happen? What went wrong for the Bucks to keep Boston's 2021-22 season alive? Who deserves the flowers for the guys in green, and what did Milwaukee get wrong? Much more importantly, what implications did the Game 6 victory have for the looming, decisive Game 7 for the Celtics? Do either teams have any adjustments left up their sleeves to find a way to advance to the 2022 Eastern Conference finals?

This episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, we are joined by Celtics Blog's Jack Simone as we break down the highs and lows of Game 6, and doing our best to get a bead on how the most important game of the Celtics season might go.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear Simone and regular hosts Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn's perspectives on what is shaping up to be an all-time classic series between the two East juggernauts.

Sorting out the Milwaukee-Boston East semis heading into Game 5 with Avenue May 11, 2022
    Show notes

For much of the Game 4 matchup between the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks, it looked like the Celtics' season might be on the ropes, with star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks pummeling Boston almost as hard as the unfriendly whistle was.

But then, in the second half, after the Greek Freak made another of his typically flashy flushes, Giannis made the mistake of taunting veteran Boston big man Al Horford, kicking his already-excellent play into a career night for the Florida product and elevating the Celtics to a key series win to hand Boston homecourt advantage.

What did we see from Game 4 the team can build on? How will the Bucks respond? To dive into the state of the Eastern Conference semifinals series heading into Game 5, we linked up with the man behind the voice in the Celtics' East semis hype video, Boston's own Avenue.

In this episode of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, we cover everything from Avenue's hip hop career, how he ended up making that Celtics connection, and what we expect out of the team now that they look like they've turned a corner in the series to the officiating issues driving NBA fans around the league up the wall.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear your usual hosts Cameron Tabatabaie, Alex Goldberg, and Justin Quinn as they make some sense about what might come next as the series heads back to TD Garden.
