    Show notes

Very blunt warning on the coronavirus from the nation's top doctor. Surgeon General Jerome Adams says this week, most Americans will face "the hardest and saddest" time of their lives. Across the nation, more than 337,000 cases of coronavirus are reported, but the real toll is likely much higher. More than 9,600 Americans have died. President Trump wants Americans to take an existing drug to fight the coronavirus, contradicting Dr. Anthony Fauci and other top scientists who say we don’t know if it’s the right medicine. Conditions appear to be improving in the two hardest his European countries, Italy and Spain. Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in a hospital for tests this morning because he’s had persistent coronavirus symptoms for more than a week. A new U.S. government report finds hospitals face a combination of problems -- slow testing, equipment shortages, and staff burnout -- that make it much harder to deal with the coronavirus. And one more problem: many of these hospitals are suddenly losing revenue.

Hundreds of passengers from two Holland America cruise ships with confirmed coronavirus cases are flying home without being quarantined in the U.S. — they do not have symptoms. The latest unemployment numbers show just how hard the coronavirus is hitting the economy.

The billionaire philanthropist talks with "CBS This Morning" co-host Anthony Mason about why we currently need “strong isolation measures on a countrywide basis,” how it could be “years” before the U.S. economy gets back to where it was before and why he thinks “for the next one, we will be far more ready than we were for this one.” Gates adds, “everybody who's lived through this will view this as a dramatic, scary part of their life. And it will affect their concerns and how they look at things for the rest of time.”

4/1: White House warns Americans about grim reality still to come. Health care workers struggle without critical supplies. Apr 01, 2020

The story of one family in Utah sums up the devastating impact of the coronavirus. President Trump says he may announce new social distancing guidelines today. At a briefing yesterday, he downplayed the needs of states hit hardest by the virus, claiming testing is no longer an issue, and blaming medical workers for the shortage of supplies. New York City's Police Department, the largest in the country, is being ravaged by the coronavirus as more than 900 NYPD employees, including more than 800 officers, have tested positive.
