EP035: Intentional Leader Development at the Company Level Oct 10, 2017

This week on the Leaders Huddle we are joined by CPT Doug Meyer from the leader development social media feed: Hay in the Barn Leader. Wrapping up his second command at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Doug shares his insights on creating and operationalizing leader development at the unit level that incorporates not only developing leaders, but the technical and tactical aspects of leadership that support the unit’s mission. Doug emphasizes leader development as a process, not a program. The process needs to be nested with the organization’s goals and the process needs to include all leaders in the organization. Doug’s strategy to creating a successful and effective leader development process begins with vision casting and starting with the end in mind. His goal is to create values-based leaders focused on standards. As leaders, developing leaders is our responsibility. We must be intentional about how we grow leaders in our Army in order to accomplish the unit’s mission and solve complex problems. The Army’s Multi-Source Assessment and Feedback (MSAF) is a powerful tool that is arguably underutilized. It is designed to enhance leader development for Army and Civilian leaders by providing them candid feedback on their performance and behavior from subordinates, superiors, and peers. MSAF can also provide resources for coaching to assist the leader’s developmental growth. Today on the Leaders Huddle we discuss the potentials and shortcomings of the MSAF with COL Kevin McAninch, who’s recent article in the Military Review: How the Army’s Multi-Source Feedback Program Could Become a Catalyst for Leader Development, discussed the current program’s “unpopularity, misuse, and ineffectiveness…then describes ways to improve its efficacy”. Non-commissioned officers are the backbone of the Army. They serve as primary trainers, advisors, and enforcers. The relationship between the officer and their NCO counterpart is critical to empowering subordinates, building cohesion, and creating effective teams. Our discussion today is with Sergeant Major Stanley Hood. SGM Hood has served the Army for over 28 years. His most recent command level assignment was with the 555^th Engineer Brigade, “triple nickle”, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. As the first non-commissioned officer on the Leaders Huddle, we ask SGM Hood to share his views on effective officer-NCO relationships. EP010: Developing a First Class Physical Readiness Training Program Sep 20, 2016

If you’ve spent more than a week in the Army, you know we “train as [we] will fight.” What is often overlooked in this training philosophy is physical fitness. Our guest today on the Leaders Huddle podcast, Captain Tony Soika, holds a B.S and M.S in exercise science and is an instructor in the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy, West Point. CPT Soika is the perfect advocate for Army Physical Readiness Training (PRT), and wants leaders to move away from “how things used to be.” Having helped develop FM 7-22 (Army Physical Readiness Training), CPT Soika explains the importance of customizing a physical training program that meets the needs of the individuals and mission requirements. We’ll also discuss how PRT is designed to prevent injuries and how to facilitate recovery for special populations, and how to conduct PRT with in limited environments.

If you want your unit to perform at its max physical potential, prepared to execute its assigned mission, this is the episode to get you started.

EP009: Mentoring Relationships as a Tool for Leader Development Sep 06, 2016

This week the Leaders Huddle interviews Lieutenant Colonel Raymond Kimball, Director of West Point’s Center for the Advancement of Leader Development and Organizational Learning. LTC Kimball holds an EdD in Learning Technologies from Pepperdine University and his research on online communities of practice and Army mentoring formed the basis for his book, The Army Officer’s Guide to Mentoring. LTC Kimball walks us through the importance of mentoring, and the obligation we have as leaders to develop members of the profession. We discuss the differences between mentoring, coaching, and counselling, and why developing others must be a greater priority for future leaders. Finally, revisiting a topic from our last podcast, we ask LTC Kimball about his thoughts on the benefits and potential challenges related to e-mentoring.

This week’s topic you can’t afford to miss! We talk to CPT Michael Eisenlohr and returning guest CPT Kyle Stilwell, who together have over 3 years’ experience managing over $150 million worth of equipment, about the importance of establishing an effective Command Supply Discipline Program in your unit. Any veteran commander will agree that regardless of how perfectly planned and executed a training event can be, it will quickly become over shadowed by a lost piece of equipment. The discipline that facilitates proper supply accountability starts during change of command inventories and is continued through deliberate practice. CPT Eisenlohr and CPT Stilwell share experience-tested insights to establish a CSDP program that can help you as a leader avoid a dreaded financial liability investigation.

Tips for building an effective Command Supply Discipline Program:

Do your homework.
Set the standard for your unit and establish a culture of property stewardship during change of command inventories.
Develop a battle rhythm for routine CSDP events and put them on your training calendar.
Get comfortable with essential property jargon, information, and responsibilities.
Figure out what property TTPs work for you, and stick with them.
Know the pitfalls that trip up commanders and how to avoid them by making CSDP a priority in your unit.

#4) Use Microsoft Word or another word processor to write your initial draft of the support form, then upload it into EES.
