    Catch my Killer

At any given time in the world, there are thousands of unsolved murders. Most of them will never be solved. The first 48 hours of a homicide are the most crucial to an investigation. Eventually, leads dry up, witnesses become less cooperative, and cases go cold (unsolved). Meanwhile, detectives continue receiving new homicide cases which push older ones to the back. After a case goes cold, it quickly becomes yesterday’s news. The public and the media will forget about the crime and move onto the next crime story.

But do you know who won’t forget about a cold case? The victim’s family and friends. They won’t forget because their case is more than a case file or news story. The victims were sons, fathers, mothers, daughters, or friends. Catch my Killer is a podcast that focuses on the victim’s surviving family and friends who give a voice to those who no longer have one. If you are listening and can help bring a killer to justice, please call in your tips. Even the smallest clue could be large enough to break a case wide open.

Episode 71: Candace "Candi" Hiltz Feb 21, 2021
    Show notes

For this week’s unsolved homicide, we have to go back to August 15, 2006 when a 17-year-old Colorado mother named Candace “aka Candi” Hiltz was brutally murdered at the home she shared with her mother Dolores.
Candi was a young mother caring for her daughter Paige. She was close to her family and sister-in-law Heather Hiltz. For Candi, a series of events would lead to her homicide. Her story begins when an officer arrived at her home looking for her brother James Hiltz. The officer began questioning his mother Dolores Hiltz about James. The officer became angry and raised his voice at Dolores. Candi stepped in and told the officer to stop disrespecting her mother. The officer told her to be quiet or he would arrest her.
Candi held out her arms and told the officer to arrest her. But if he did, she would report him to his superiors for taking money from a prominent drug dealer.
Shortly after, Candi’s dog disappeared. Someone had lured the dog from the property, tied it to a tree, then killed it. Within a few weeks of the family dog being killed, intruders had unknowingly entered Candy’s home and waited for her.
Candi was shot through the chest and in the head. The killers then wrapped her body in a blanket and left her body near her baby, who was in a basinet.
Sometime later, a man purchased the remnants of a storage shed. When he entered it, he found the bloody blanket used to cover Candi’s body, an axe, rope, other items and a police uniform belonging to detective Robert Dodd. It was also learned that Detective Dodd had disposed of other police evidence at a local dump.
The Hiltz family and the community wondered why this evidence secured in a police evidence room?
For this episode of the Catch my Killer podcast, Candi’s sister Heather Hiltz and private investigator Rich Prater tell Candi’s story. If you know anything please reach out to Heather through The Candace Hiltz investigation fund page on FB or you can contact Rich Prater at 469-954-5457 or email him at Rich.Prater.rjp@gmail.com. Anything you share with Rich, he will forward to Heather.

    Episode 70: Tatyana Sims Feb 14, 2021
    Show notes

This week’s story involves a young Indianapolis mother named Tatyana Sims. She was a 20 year old mother who was viciously murdered while at home with her daughter. It was around 3am on September 3, 2019 when The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 3300 block of Hovey Street in Indianapolis.
Police entered a bullet ridden home and found Tatyana Sims and her young daughter suffering from gunshot wounds. Although Tatyana’s daughter survived, she died in the hospital. The police found over 40 shell casings at the home. Amanda Davis, who is Tatyana’s mother, told me that the baby slept on a couch that evening. And this is what saved her life.
For this episode, I spoke to Amanda Davis, who is the mother of Tatyana Sims. She told me she has an idea of who killed her daughter and a possible motive. Before Tatyana died, she told her mom she had received a death threat from a man who terrified her. Amanda said her daughter knew this man was going to kill her.
Amanda has said there are people who know what happened to her daughter. But they won’t speak to the police because they are terrified of reprisal. Do you know what happened to this young mother? Her family is grieving over the loss of the daughter. She was only 20. If you you know anything about the death of Tatyana Sims, please contact the Indianapolis PD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS. You can even leave an anonymous tip.

Episode 68: The unsolved murder of Sgt. Patrick Rust Jan 31, 2021
    Show notes

Sgt. Patrick Rust was on leave. He had been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. He was getting some down time before his transfer from Fort Drum, New York to Fort Lewis in Washington state. On March 15, 2007, Patrick was last seen in a gay bar speaking to a friend from high school. It's believed Patrick left the bar around 1 a.m.
He was never seen alive again. It was a cold New York winter. The temperature was in the 20s. Patrick didn't own a car so where did he go? His roommate called his superiors the next day to report that Patrick wouldn't be showing up for work. The roommate claimed he didn't know where Patrick was. If he didn't know where he was, then how would he know that Patrick wouldn't show up for work? And why would he call Patrick's supervisors?
On September 16, 2007, a farmer found a human skeleton in his field. The skeleton was identified as Patrick Rust. He was located five miles away from the bar where he was last seen. Judy Rust hired a retired detective to investigate the case. What he found was disturbing.
Judy Rust continues fighting to get justice for her youngest son Patrick. Was Patrick killed by his own fellow soldiers or was he the victim of a hate crime because someone thought he was gay?
Today, no one has been arrested. If you have any information about this cold case, please contact the Jefferson County, NY Sheriff’s Office at (315) 786-2676.

Episode 67: The Janette Roberson cold case Jan 24, 2021
    Show notes

Janette Roberson, her husband and their two children had moved to the small town of Reed City, Michigan about eight months before her death. She worked in the pet department in the basement of a local store called Gambles. It was in that basement where another employee found Janette’s bruised and battered body on the afternoon of January 19, 1983. Police believe she had to have been killed sometime between 1 and 4 p.m. that afternoon.
Although there had been other employees and customers walking around upstairs, no one reportedly heard anything.
Janette, severely beaten with several different blunt objects, had also been sexually assaulted. “This was a brutal -- very brutal --killing,” Janette’s sister Lana said. “I don’t know how someone can do that to another person.”
At the time, Reed City was home to offices for three law enforcement agencies: the Reed City Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department. Each department participated in the investigation, according to local newspaper reports at the time.
January 19, 2021 marked the 38th anniversary of this brutal murder.
Today, no one has been arrested. If you have any information about this cold case, please contact the Michigan State Police at (989) 773-5951.

Episode 66: The disappearance of Timothy Guy Jan 17, 2021
    Show notes

Timothy Guy disappeared in February 1987. His family believes he never left his place of employment alive. When Timothy disappeared, he was 18 years old. He lived with his parents in Snellville, Georgia. He had left home to take a job working at a now defunct ranch called the Sleepy Fox Farm located in Forsyth County Georgia.
The ranch was roughly 25 miles away from Tim’s home. Not only did he work at the farm, he also lived there. Tim worked as a farm hand for a man named Phillip Klinger who is now deceased. Tim cleaned stalls and did other manual labor.
He was last seen on February 6, 1987. Allegedly, he left the farm with a friend who drove a 1970 something Chevy Impala. And this is where this case gets strange. If you look up Timothy Guy on the internet, there are many articles and theories about his fate.
Warren Guy is Tim’s father. He has been searching for his son for over 30 years. Over the years, he has heard many rumors about his son. One of the more horrific ones is that Tim never left the Sleepy Fox Farm alive.
For this week's episode, I spoke to a true crime blogger named Anthony (Shurlock Holmes) who is Warren's friend. I also spoke to Dawn Klinger, who is the daughter of Timothy's late employer. It's been alleged he was involved with Tim's disappearance. Dawn has defended her father and said he had nothing to do with Tim's disappearance.

Episode 65: The suspicious death of U.S. Navy veteran Brandon Embry Jan 10, 2021
    Show notes

On Sept. 12, 2019, officers responded to an apartment in Asheboro, North Carolina around 3:20 p.m. They entered the apartment and found a 33-year-old man named Brandon Embry nude and unresponsive. Brandon was covered in bruises and cuts. There was also blood on the walls. The entire apartment was destroyed. The commode was ripped out and the entire apartment looked as if it had been ransacked. Embry was taken to the hospital for medical care. Unfortunately, he died from his wounds at the Moses Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
The final ruling was that Brandon died from pneumonia and sustained several self inflicted injuries.
However, Sarah Lee, who is Brandon’s mother is angry about the ruling. She believes that someone murdered her son and his injuries are the result of her son fighting for his life. Sarah has also spoken to a nurse who cared for Brandon before he died. She told Sarah that she thought it impossible for Brandon to have beaten himself to death. She said his injuries resembled those of someone who was in a car wreck.
Sarah later found out that a neighbor had witnessed an unknown dark haired man arguing with Brandon shortly before he died. Sarah also mentioned that Brandon had a female friend who seemed to have information about Brandon’s death that wasn’t publicly released.
Sarah has shared Brandon’s story in hopes that her son’s case will be reopened and Brandon’s death will be investigated as a homicide. The police have closed Brandon's case. If you have any tips or information about his death, please contact Sarah Lee through Brandon's FB page titled Brandon's voice (https://www.facebook.com/brandonwembry/).

Episode 64: Who murdered Danny Stowe? Jan 03, 2021
    Show notes

This week’s unsolved homicide goes back to February 26, 1982 in Atlanta, Georgia. The 39 year anniversary of Danny Stowe’s murder will be coming up in February and his family has no answers. For this story, I spoke to Lou Anne Carmichael, who was married to Danny. The couple had two sons together. Although Lou Anne has since remarried, she continues seeking justice for Danny.
Danny Stowe’s story goes back to a strip club called the Purple Onion that was once in Atlanta. He was playing pool with his brothers as he often did. On occasion, Danny would work the door and collect entrance fee money from patrons. On the night of February 26, 1982, Danny was spending time with his brothers. The man scheduled to work the door called off. Danny was asked to work the door, which he did.
During the evening, an unknown black man entered the Purple Onion and began ordering drinks. He asked if he could run a tab. He became angry after being denied. He was then asked to leave. The man left the bar and retrieved a gun. He fired into the club and fatally shot 28-year-old Danny Stowe. The killer then fled in a pristine Orange Nova with a black top. The Atlanta police secured the glass the man was drinking from. It had his fingerprints on it. They also retrieved the bullet used to kill Danny.
Unfortunately, the glass and bullet have disappeared.
Someone out there knows who killed Danny. Do you know who killed him? If you are listening to this story and know something, I urge you to call in a tip and help the Stowe family get justice.
If you have any information about this case, please contact Atlanta Crime Stoppers at

Episode 63: The murder of Lance Corporal Ronald Valentin Dec 27, 2020
    Show notes

This week’s story is about Lance Cpl. Ronald “Macho” Valentin who grew up in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Like millions of other young men and women in America, Ronald joined the Marines.
Although his mother Gloria didn’t want him to join, she still supported her first born son’s dream. Ronald kept in touch with his mom. The two spoke regularly. Ronnie would eventually be sent to Okinawa, Japan.
Gloria last spoke to her son on August 31, 2018. For five days she went without hearing from her son. She found it strange and had a feeling something was wrong. Her son wouldn’t go so long without contacting her. He knew she worried about him. Gloria would learn that her son went missing for five days before he was reported missing.
On September 5, 2018, the Marines contacted Gloria and asked if she knew where her son was. She said he was at his duty assignment at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, Japan. She was shocked and upset that they were asking where her son was. Weren’t they keeping tabs on their soldiers?
A day later on the 6th, Gloria learned that her son Ronald was no longer missing. He was found in a drainage ditch 200 feet from where he was last seen. He had suffered blunt force trauma to the back of the head. Someone had murdered the 21 year old Marine.
After two years, Gloria hasn’t received any answers from NCIS or anyone else about her son’s homicide. She remains in the dark and has no answers. She wants to know who killed Ronald and why? She has told me she will never stop pursuing answers until she finds out who killed her son.
If you know anything about the death of this young man, please contact NCIS at 1-800-543-6289 or visit their website at https://www.ncis.navy.mil/. You can leave your tips anonymously if you so choose. You can also reach Gloria Curry through her FB page titled Justice for Ronny. She will forward any tips to NCIS.

Episode 62: The unsolved murder of Victor Duenas Jr. Dec 20, 2020
    Show notes

This week’s story is about a 25-year-old man named Victor Duenas Jr. who lived in Los Angeles. Everyone who knew Victor loved him. He didn’t have any issues with anyone and wasn’t involved with criminal activity. For this episode I spoke to Candy Villa, who is Victor’s mother. They truly had a special bond. Candy gave birth to Victor when she was only 15. So they grew up together and became best friends.
On December 7, 2016 just before 8pm, Victor was at his mother’s home. He was standing outside on the porch when someone approached him and fired shots at him. After hearing the sounds of gunfire, Candy ran to the front door to find Victor mortally wounded. He had staggered into the house and then collapsed. In his final moments, he asked his mom to help him. She began administering to CPR. Unfortunately, she couldn’t save him. He died in her arms.
Four years have passed since Victor’s death. The police have nothing. It’s unsure if the killer walked up to Victor or if the killer drove by in a car. There are no witnesses and if there, no one is talking. Victor’s parents are on an endless search for justice. Neither will give up on finding their son’s killer. Now on with the story of Vitor Duenas Jr. as told by his mother Candy Villa.
Do you know what happened to this young man? His family needs your help. Not only has the family lost a son, but Victor’s son will never grow up to know his own father.
