    What's Your Calling? Dec 16, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of the Creative Introvert I'm asking the question: What's Your Calling?

In my experience, there is NOTHING as powerful as knowing what your calling is for fuelling your actions.

Willpower is something we have to manage, like our energy. Like a muscle, it get’s tired out. It gets drained by making decisions, by stress, by lack of sleep, by too much sugar.

But we need willpower to stay on task. To get up every day and go to work to pay the bills to look after the kids to make our businesses thrive, to finish that painting that’s been there for months.

What if we could speed up willpower recovery, or provide ourselves with a second wind?

Well, that’s exactly what knowing our calling can do, and that's what this episode is all about.

Acamea Deadwiler on Being Single as an Introvert Dec 09, 2019
    Show notes

According to today's podcast guest, being single does not mean being broken, lonely, or desperate. And whether or not you already knew that, it can feel like society at large is sending us another message.

I rarely talk about matters of relationships on the podcast - mostly because I'm certainly no expert there - but I've been eager to broach the topic, and felt that Acamea Deadwiler, author and all round badass, would be the perfect guest to have on the show.

This podcast is also being released as we approach holiday season, a time of year I can attest is particularly difficult for those of us who are not in relationships. I hope you find Acamea's words as comforting and inspiring as I did.

    What we discussed

Why women in particular suffer from the stigma of being single

The challenges that single introverts face in dating

How to handle being single at the holidays

Pros and cons of online dating

What's Your Story? (And Yes, You Have One!) Dec 02, 2019
    Show notes

Everything we've experienced to this point plays a part in our overall story.

And they don't all have to flow together neatly into some overused Heroes Journey (though, it is overused for a reason, I'll grant you.)

The story I most often tell is how I left my job. I use this to illustrate how vital it was for me when I finally started paying attention to my introversion.

But you might not know about the time I first built an online course. Which was an abominable fail. I didn’t sell one, not a sausage.

Now, I tell this to clients and when I give talks or do workshops on building a career online, in order to illustrate how bloody important it is to do thorough testing before putting your heart & soul into something.

I also have stories I may never share: stories of unrequited love, rejection, regret, shame. These stories are for me: their purpose isn’t to remind me of the harshness of life or my wounds: they are here to remind me that I lived through them, and came out the other side, a little bruised and battered, but stronger for it. It doesn’t matter if they pale in comparison to stuff you hear about on the news or read about in memoirs. They still have their place.

In each story, I can see part of me that transformed because of that pain or challenge or disappointment. I wouldn't want to forget them, because they are part of me today. Just like you know not to fuck with the past when you’ve got a time machine: I know I wouldn't change a thing because God knows what I'd be like without those experiences.

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lauren Sapala, author, blogger, and writing coach. I’ve been following Lauren for quite some time now on the Intro-Twittersphere and have found her to be a fount of advice on writing, marketing your writing and doing it all as a highly sensitive, creative introvert. After reading her book Firefly Magic and absolutely loving it, I wanted to know more about her and how she writes.

    What we discussed

How to stop forcing ourselves into social media boxes that don't fit us

How to drop the "rational" voice in our head that says marketing needs to look a certain way

The importance of boundaries on social media

How we can take the pressure to be perfect off

How to Cure Creative Block Nov 18, 2019
    Show notes

Long before I started the Creative Introvert I had come across the term creative block. It was probably at art college I first had a taste of it.

The solution? Didn’t seem to exist. It wasn’t the kind of question I even considered asking my lecturers about.

Over the years I’ve got to know creative block even more intimately, and whilst I’m sure we’ll be meeting for many years to come, creative block does seem to linger less than it used to, and for the most part keep away.

That’s because I’ve worked damn hard at experimenting with different solutions for how to cure creative block and that’s what I hope to share with you today, in the hope that at least one tip here will come in handy, should you have an encounter with creative block.

Scott Barry Kaufmann on What Introversion Really Is... Nov 11, 2019
    Show notes

Today I have arguably the most controversial guest I’ve had on the show (don’t worry it’s no one political) and I say controversial because of his take on introversion. And it’s not just any old take on introversion: today’s guest is a lot more qualified than I am or many other professional online introverts are to talk about this stuff: Scott Barry Kaufman is is a psychologist at Columbia University exploring the depths of human potential (see research). He embraces a humanistic, integrative approach to help all kinds of minds live a creative, fulfilling, and meaningful life.

Now I don’t want to give you too many more spoilers for todays show, I just want you to dive in and listen - hopefully with an open mind - and if you’re anything like me you’ll have a LOT to think about after hearing this.

Stoicism for Creative Introverts Nov 04, 2019
    Show notes

    I’ve just completed Stoic Week!

What the heck is Stoic Week you ask? It’s an online event in which people from all over the world attempt to live like a Stoic for seven days. It’s run every year by the Modern Stoic and basically provides a framework for everyone to join in with, for free, for one week.

I have another podcast that dives much deeper into this, over on The Seeker and the Skeptic, check that out if you’re interested in learning more about Stoicism - both the good bits and the not so good bits.

So for those who aren’t totally sure what stoicism is or fancy hearing my garbled explanation, here goes:

Stoicism is a school of philosophy founded in Athens, Greece by Zeno of Citium around 300 BC. Zeno would lecture to his students from a painted porch (stoa polikile) and that’s where the word ’Stoic’ comes from.

The teachings spread far and wide, influencing the likes of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, right up to modern day stoic bros like Tim Ferriss and Ryan Holiday, which is where I first came across the philosophy.

I'll be revealing the four reasons stoicism is so useful for creative introverts today, in this week's podcast.

    Resources mentioned:

    Modern Stoic

How to be a Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci

A Guide to the Good Life by William B. Irvine

The Tao of Seneca presented by Tim Ferriss

I haven’t vetted all of these, but you can have stoic fun with this list.

7 Tips For Working From Home Oct 21, 2019
    Show notes

Today I’d like to talk to you about WFHing - ok, translation: working from home.

This is something I’ve been doing since 2013 and it’s given me an incredible amount of freedom I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I can pick when I work, for the most part, where I work: as long as I have wifi - and how I work. For many introverts, particularly those of the highly sensitive nature, being able to have this freedom over our environment is so, so important.

I’ve told my story plenty of times so I won’t go into it in depth, but just to use the example, being in an open plan office environment, having to clock in and out at certain times, commuting through a city - all of this was just phenomenally draining for me, and I’m sure for many of you.

I’m not sure of the exact stats, but more than 64 million Americans work from home now, at least part time. I think this is a good time for creative introverts and HSPs who are done with the office: employers are waking up to our individual needs and thx to the internet, there are more ways than ever to WFH.

But rather than try to convince you to work from home, I really want to focus on sharing my advice for those of you who already work from home, who are new to it and those who are considering it in the near future.
