What is Creativity, Anyway? Feb 24, 2020
    Show notes

What is creativity anyway? What does it mean to create, to be creative? Is it something we all have? Can we all do it? Can we all be it?

And if so, can we become more creative? Is there some kind of definitive measuring stick for creativity?

Now that’s the INTJ in me speaking, but really I think it’s a great starting point for a juicy episode of the creative introvert, and on today's show I’m hoping to go down some paths that don’t just stick in the realm of abstract ideas about creativity, nor do I want to strip creativity from its magic, the kind of stuff that attracts us to the creativity in the first place.

Why You Can't Get What You Want (Ever) Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

Today I want to talk to you about wanting things, all the things - and why we simply can’t get what we want. Ever. Sorry to burst your bubble. I promise there will be something redeeming and positive in today’s message: I want to prove to you that it can actually be a GOOD thing - it might just take a while for us to get to it. It’s worth it though.

The Daimon and Creativity Jan 27, 2020
    Show notes

This maybe the podcast I’ve done most research for in the history of the Creative Introvert, and not just book research. It’s a topic that’s been brewing somewhere in my mind, whether it’s consciously or otherwise, and I finally have my ideas in a place where I’m ready to share and fairly confident in my ability to give you something that’s genuinely useful, especially if you’re interested in tapping into your source of greatest creative potential, getting into that flow state, and living from a place that feels true for you.

    • The number one question you should ask at networking events (and how to avoid ‘what do you do?)
    • A defence of small talk!

Why Those Productivity Tips Don’t Work For You Jan 13, 2020
    Show notes

This is something that’s taken me quite a few years and many, many chats with various creative introverts to discover: not all tips to be productive work for me or you or anyone for that matter.

Yeah, I know. Mind = blown.

Maybe you already knew that. But maybe you didn’t and you were like me, wondering why the fuck the advice of this hyper-productive guru just didn’t work when you tried to apply it in your own life.

The truth is, we’re not all identical beings. Nor are we totally unique either. We’re this annoyingly intricate, yet beautifully nuanced jumble of similarities and differences. Which… makes giving advice on things like productivity and getting stuff done… rather tricky.

And I’ll be the first to admit I’ve tried to do this. I’ve tried to speak to you, and thousands of other Creative Introverts over the years, and tried to cover all cases, but I’m always going to fall short. I’m always going to miss the edge cases, the rebels, the square pegs, and that irritates the heck out of me.

The truth is: only YOU know you. Yes, someone else can be very helpful, maybe even necessary, for shining a light on parts of ourselves we didn’t know were there, but it’s really up to us to see what’s being illuminated, accept it, and learn from it.

Then we can take action that fits us like a snug glove. That’s what today’s podcast is all about. I’m going to guide you through three different tools you can use to figure out what productivity tips to ignore and which will actually work for you.

Phyllis Brasenell on Relationship-Based Marketing Jan 06, 2020
    Show notes

Today’s podcast guest is a business and marketing consultant and strategist - and one who has a refreshingly different take on those things that as creative introverts we tend to want to avoid - namely that sales, marketing and general putting-self-out-there piece. We have a super fun conversation talking about:

    • Why it's okay (and even preferable) to start small and grow slow
    • Understanding the 5-steps of your client's journey from no idea who you are to part of your tribe
    • Why you don't need social media to start your business and how you can dig deep into real relationships instead

    12 Lessons From Being a Digital Nomad in 2019 Dec 31, 2019
    Show notes

If you remember back to 2018, my theme for that year was FUN. I attempted my year of fun, trying one new fun thing a week, and I learned a lot in the process about what I call fun.

This year I decided to focus on… adventure. I’m still not sure what I mean by adventure, but this is what the dictionary says:

: an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks

It’s safe to say I had a year of adventure then. The difference between fun and adventure for me, is that fun is light. Breezy. Joyful. Relaxing. Adventure, on the other hand… might involve peril. Struggle. Challenge. Overcoming fear. Employing courage, embracing the unexpected, encountering the unknown.

So in January 2019, I left my home by the sea in Hove, gave up my flat, gave up a bunch of my possessions all in order to do the digital nomad thing for one year.

I travelled in 3 continents, visited 10 countries and made dozens of new friends.

Now rather than just telling you about my travel stories which I’m sure are only interesting to me, I thought I’d wrap this year up with 12 lessons (one for each month) that I learned from being a digital nomad (I kind of cringe at that label) and what I’m going to do to embody those lessons in 2020.

I don’t know if this will resonate with you, but I hope it does. If you’ve been listening for a while, we’ve probably got a lot in common, even beyond our creative introverted-ness, and I’d like to think there’s one takeaway in this episode that you can take into 2020 too. Maybe we can keep each other accountable in the new year too.

Andy Mort on Gentleness as an Act of Rebellion Dec 23, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s guest is someone who I’ve been meaning to have on the podcast since… before it even existed.

Andy Mort is the host of the Gentle Rebel Podcast, a musician, an undertaker and someone who is very much on my wave length (fellow INTJ too!)

    We talk about:

    • The challenges introvert musicians face

    • The stigma attached to sensitivity in our society

    • The problem with desensitising ourselves

    • How to encourage sensitivity as an act of gentle rebellion

    • What Andy would tell his younger self ... And much more!
