    In today’s episode, I will discuss and share a piece that Mark Ford wrote that I found very insightful and valuable. I have found Mark Ford's advice and insights on personal finance, business, real estate, investing and building wealth in general extremely interesting. I subscribe to his Palm Beach Letter, a monthly financial newsletter publication that provides fantastic information on building wealth.     • You can’t truly trust anybody but yourself with your money.
    • The harder someone tries to convince you to trust him, the less you should.
    • However good a track record someone has, never believe that he/she can’t suddenly start losing your money. In fact, if you are like me, the moment you invest will be the moment his/her track record starts falling apart.
    • All markets rise and fall. Don’t ever believe anyone who assures you that they can predict the future.
    • If you don’t learn to spend less than you make, you will never have peace of mind.
    • Most of what you buy when your income is above $100,000 is discretionary. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you need a big house or a fancy car.
    • In making financial projections for yourself or a business, always create three scenarios: one that shows what things will look like if everything goes as hoped; one that shows what will happen if things are mediocre; and one that shows what will happen if things fall apart.
    • Know that the third scenario is optimistic.

    014: M.C. Laubscher: Wisdom Wednesday! Understanding Parkinson's Law May 25, 2016
    Show notes

    In today’s episode, I discuss Parkinson's Law. Norcote Parkinson wrote a book called Parkinson’s Law where he isolates some limitations of us all and particularly focuses in on the behavior of individuals within a group. In Parkinson’s Law he writes, “Work expands to meet the time envelope allowed.” Meaning if we have 5 days to complete a task, it will take us 5 days to complete the task. If we were allowed 30 days to complete the same task, we would take 30 days to complete the task. Parkinson’s law also states that, “a luxury, once enjoyed, becomes a necessity” and “expenses rise equal to income” In a financial context, we can define Parkinson’s Law as: the more you earn, the more you spend. When our income increases, our expenses rise to meet or exceed that increase. We are always working against Parkinson’s Law. Self_Journal Bestselfco., Make Success a Habit!     • We can combat Parkinson’s Law is by establishing an wealth infrastructure and system to beat it within your wealth plan.
    • You can set up a separate account in which you can make weekly or monthly deposits. These deposits can be set as a fixed amount or a percentage of the money you earn. This will ensure that a percentage of very dollar that comes into your personal economy is automatically captured in a separate account.
    • You can automate this infrastructure so it removes the “human element” from it
    • How your “wealth capture account”, is a great vehicle to build liquid savings reserves that can be accessed for emergencies, as well as for capitalizing on investment opportunities.

He literally went from having zero, squatting in bank-owned property to owning more than 300 units of property across several states.     In today’s episode, I try to answer a listener’s question of what factors to consider before we invest in something. If we take control back of our own money and take personal responsibility and accountability for our own wealth, what factors should we consider before investing in anything? This is extremely important. The first thing we should invest in, is our own financial education. We should never invest a single cent into something that we do not understand. I will discuss other factors I put together in a checklist for us. Self_Journal Bestselfco., Make Success a Habit! Use the Self Journal to organize and align tactical day to day tasks with larger life goals. Key Take Aways:

    • Invest in your financial education first
    • Do not invest in anything that you do not know and understand
    • Learn the difference between assets and liabilities
    • Is the investment aligned with your principles and values?
    • How is the investment providing value for others?
    • How many people is this investment providing benefit for?
    • Is this for the benefit of a few or are you providing value to your community and society?
    • Is the investment aligned with your strengths and skill set, your human life value?
    • Are you providing time, knowledge, money or credit to the investment?
    • Will the investment return your capital and how quickly?
    • How liquid is the investment?
    • How Economic Efficient is it with regards to taxes, limiting and reducing fees and other factors?
    • Do you have control over the investment, can you improve the performance and limit the downside?
    • Does it provide cashflow?
    • What is the return on investment and cash-on-cash return?
    • What is the exposure to market risk, does it provide a return in all markets?
    • What is the exit strategy for the investment?
