:44 NYC counsil on health. 1:31 Convienence store owners were there in fill force. They feel unfairly targeted by the ordinaince meant to reduce the number of tobacco retailer licences. 2:21 Tobacco retailers who chose to sell e cigarettes will have to obtain a seperate license. 2:44 This hurts the dedicated e cigarette retail establishments. 3:29 Council member Peter Koo has been vocal about opposition of these bills. He and some other members are opposed because of legitimate concerns about the ever expanding black market. 5:48 Spike Babain raised the point that the FDA has recently aknowledged issue of THR and differing regulatiory process. 7:24 Two bills addressing the licensing caps on tobacco and e cigarette retailers. 9:20 Having your buisness devalued hurts far more than the original bills intend to. Sadly there is still a cap so there will be no new vape shops. 10:30 Unclear about when this goes to the full counsil (The answer to that is today) 11:50 Amending the bills language is very hard when stakeholders are turned away and denied meetings with the bills sponsors it is hard to participate in the legislative process. 14:00 Efforts to contact a lawmaker "We can't talk to those people" in refrence to industory stakeholders. 16:30 Are regular stakeholders ie the consumer also being turned away? 17:77 In Ny state legislature the testimony against a bill is something that is up to the discression of the bills sponsor. 19:19 These are the deep, deep cracks that the all tobacco is bad narritive are exposing in our legislators and the legislative process. If you ever needed proof of broken government this is it. 21:00 Everybody happy about the FDA's comments on THR last week? 21:09 Well don't be because this is what we see this week https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm570501.htm?utm_source=CTPPartnerTwitter&utm_medium=social&utm_term=gov&utm_content=pressrelease&utm_campaign=ctp-trc-ends The real cost campaign 24:36 On the dangers of the misappropriation of the language of Anti-Smoking activists. 26:16 Words matter. https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm568923.htm 32:51 SAMMEC http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/flu-deaths-reality-check-1.1127442 35:51 Dog whistle words meant to appease. 42:42 The idea that nicotine alone is responsible for harm in it's use when it is in essence part of a whole. 44:11 Taking two steps foward and two steps back. 44:56 Why the vapor shop is so important. 47:00 More on concerns regarding the FDA's Real Cost Campagin.

:33 FDA commissioner Gotlieb made an announcement regarding tobacco and nicotine regulation. 1:20 Proposed new deadline for submission of newly deemed tobacco products. A more than 4 year entension. 2:02 Revisiting the PMTA and MRTP process. 2:30 The application and approval process as it stands is really not clear to anyone. 4:00 This extension is not going to affect any other rules as written. (IE warning labels and ingredient listings, those are as is origanllly written) 4:24 This is all proposed and rules will need to be promulgated. 4:44 A rule regarding products standard for e liquid this includes the agency looking at flavors. 5:21 This is interesting as we should have a discussion about the role flavors play in allowing smokers to switch to a low risk tobacco product. 5:25 It's nice to see someone at FDA willing to onvestigate the issue and not weighed down by decades of ideology. 6:04 The other anticipated rules or gudance we believe will include battery safety. 6:39 Very low nicotine cigarettes. http://reason.com/blog/2017/08/02/a-cap-on-nicotine-in-cigarettes-would-be 7:33 Merit denicotined cigarette https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2726800/ 9:00 This proposal has been around for awhile, most recently it got a shot in the arm by NIH giving 100 million for studying the issue. It raises all sorts of ethical questions about the efficacy of doing this as we discovered with low tar and light cigarettes smokers inhaled the smoke deepr into the lung causing issues in the deeper lung tissues. 10:00 The press has run with the idea that the FDA will lower the nicotine content but the idea that harm reduction needs the heavy hand of regulation instead of truthful information is troubling. 12:48 There is nothing to stop the FDA from also mandating the nicotine content in smokeless tobacco and in vapor products as well. http://casaa.org/news/fdas-new-approach-to-nicotine-regulation-whats-in-and-whats-out/ 17:00 Any sort of FDA or legislative relief could cause opponents to fire back harder than ever. 17:28 This could lead to states and municipalities pushing regulations much harder as they think the Federal Government has dropped the ball. 17:40 Dr Jerome Adams confirmation hearing. https://www.help.senate.gov/hearings/nomination-hearing5 18:18 Extending PMTA rules is just one facet of the regulation process. The government still has all of the same regulatory powers as before and none of the other regulations have changed. 19:47 https://patch.com/new-york/whiteplains/e-cig-dangers-discussed-roundtable 25:25 New Jersey Tobacco 21,Maine Tobacco 21,Expecting Oregon to approve Tobacco 21 any day now. 27:42 Heath http://www.recorder.com/With-no-stores-Heath-eyes-tobacco-sales-regs-11546318 29:19 Banning menthol 31:10 On Australia 37:07 Hearing personal sucess stories and the effect on lawmakers. 37:47 You may not see it but our members and people who have participated in things like the Njoy citizens petition and the Calls to action to contact legislators are swaying hearts and minds. 39:58 CASAA has worked for years to ensire the consumers view is represented not just with legislators but wiith trade groups and the like.

:54 Nicopure Right to be Smokefree lawsuit update. Judge has ruled in favor of the FDA. 2:24 Next steps in the hands of the legal professionals. 3:11 This outcome was not unexpected but this is why we are using multiple strategies on many fronts. 4:16 CEI VS DOT regulation preventing vaping on airplanes. We were co-plantiffs with the CEI on this lawsuit attempting to address regulatory overreach. The court ruled in favor of the DOT. All of the documentation is at this link and you can even hear some of the oral arguments in this case --> here https://cei.org/litigation/cei-v-dot 7:27 This ruling by the court validates that vaping and smoking are the same. This also takes the power away from the airlines to allow them to adapt and perhaps someday choose to offer the ability to vape to passengers if they so choose to. 12:47 Because this comes from DOT it also stops private planes from allowing people to vape on those flights. 14:37 Govenor Chris Christie from New Jersey signed a tobacco 21 bill into law. This was something that seemed to come from out of left field. 19:02 What makes this shocking to someone living in New Jersey is that Chris Christie has done so well with attempting to remove some shame and stigma from people who might need to seek help for drug rehabilitation. His and the state's willful ignorance of harm reduction for smokers is espically shocking and painful since he had done so much good work on harm reduction in the past. 22:10 The need to make a distinction between antismoking activists and real public health professionals. 22:30 Harm reduction deniers. 24:21 Isolation as a tool to seperate smokers and vapers from society at large. 27:08 This is the third state to pass statewide Tobacco 21 legislation. Hawaii California and now New Jersey have passed these laws. 27:40 Mionnesota seems to be rolling right along with the same program. 28:14 Deleware 5 cents per ml tax passed. On paper this looks like a loss, but this is not as bad as it really could have been. 29:47 VTA confrence update. 33:31 Ohio VTA members doing an amazing job. 35:08 Hill Day. A bit on speaking with your legislators at home and in D.C.

1:25 Today is the deadline for submitting comments to the FDA regarding the NNN content of smokeless tobacco. http://cqrcengage.com/casaa/app/act-on-a-regulation?0&engagementId=373393 2:03 CASAA submitted their comment in no small part due to the efforts of Julie Woessner,Brian Carter and Alex Clark with an assist from Amelia Howard. 2:30 FDA promulgated a rule January 23 to restrict the level of NNN (N'-Nitrosonornicotine.) Brad Rodu and Carl Phillips break this down and show this is based on faulty math. http://rodutobaccotruth.blogspot.com/search?q=NNN https://antithrlies.com/2017/07/09/sunday-science-lesson-toxicology-and-the-chains-in-american-football/ 5:29 This isn't a chemical that is added to any tobacco product, this is a naturally occuring substance. 8:04 Our comment http://casaa.org/news/casaa-submits-comment-on-fdas-smokeless-tobacco-standards-rule/ 8:32 This rule was rushed at the very end of the Obama administrations tenure. 9:30 A point made by Brian Fotik from the Reason Foundation which should not be overlooked in this mess is that within hours of the rule being published there were comments from the AAP,ACSCAN,AHA,ALA,CFTFK and Truth Initiative. 12:47 What the public thinks it knows about smokeless tobacco is not the entire truth of the subject at all. What we know is based on data that is not exclusive to smokeless moist snuff. 16:14 The same misinformation campagin used against smokeless tobacco is the one being used against vaping as well. 17:30 With a very heavy asist from Atakan Befrits board member http://INNCO.org and NNA Sweden,CASAA submitted a letter in support of the Swedish government to update evidence about the benefits of Swedish Snus. To add to this the NNN has been added to a court case in the European Court of Justice https://nnalliance.org/blog/165-update-on-the-challenge-to-the-ban-on-snus-next-step-the-european-court-of-justice challenging the snus ban in Europe. 22:16 A brief history of smokeless tobacco's ban in Europe appears in this book https://www.amazon.com/Art-Suppression-Pleasure-Panic-Prohibition/dp/0956226531 24:00 Sting Free Snus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDo4bbIzdv4 28:28 Alex Clark and Jule Wessoner will be in Washington DC at VTA Vape and The FDA confrence on July 18 and 19. :58 Massachusetts Take action to oppose two bills that would make access to smoke-free tobacco and nicotine products needlessly more expensive. S 1576 S 1497 These bills are scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 1:00 PM Joint Revenue Committee Hearing Room A-2 Massachusetts State House 24 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02133 Please attend this hearing if you are able to. If you can't then please take action now to oppose these bills by sending a message to committee members urging them to vote no on S 1576 and amend S 1497 to remove section 3! Take action today! http://casaa.org/call-to-action/de-stop-governor-carney-from-taxing-vapor-products 4:10 California Flavor Bans Much of what has started this is an urge to ban menthol. Anti tobacco activists want to ban it as it seems to be unfairly targeted to vulnerable communities and although it arises out of an urge to protect people it also unfairly targets all tobacco products including low risk products that many people use to reduce or stop their smoking entirely. http://sanfrancisco.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=44&clip_id=28096#.WULE3BYvKkc.facebook A more ethical way of handling this flavor ban is to share truthful and accurate information with current vulnerable populations which allows them to make a better informed choice. 11:24 The ordinance was passed out of committee so it goes onto a debate in the full council. The recording of the full hearing is available here http://sanfrancisco.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php... It's very important to point out that from May 27 until June 24 is Ramadan. This is a religious observation and a time of fasting, this fasting generally includes not drinking or eating anything for almost the entire day. 28:45 It's important to point out that many stakeholders most affected by these proposed ordinances are Muslim. By scheduling these ordinance hearings during this time it has a negative effect on allowing free participation in the process by all stakeholders. 30:40 It is an example of how anti-tobacco activists are sort of in their own little bubble this would be it.
