Several issues at the local level. Bloomington Minnesota THR4LIFE(thr4life.org) ( www.facebook.com/thr4life/)doing a great job building colitions with other tobacco retailers and keeping everyone up to date on what is happening. Bloomington is having an administrative hearing on October 10,which is sort of an invite only thing where you can only attend if you have reciveived a letter in the mail. It only goes out to tobacco retailers. www.smokelesssmoking.com/blogs/news/t…on-minnesota Actual public hearing is November 6 and at 7 pm. Keep checking on CASAA for an update. Canton Massachusetts ordinance restricts the sale of flavored tobacco and smokeless tobacco to those under the age of 21. Their BOH is only two people so the entire process is a bit chaotic. Hearing agendas, minutes and videos Canton Massachusetts (town.canton.ma.us/agendacenter) casaa.org/archived-news/canton…ectronic-cigarettes/ Potential deaths averted in USA by replacing cigarettes with e-cigarettes tobaccocontrol.bmj.com/content/early…l-2017-053759 "Compared with the Status Quo, replacement of cigarette by e-cigarette use over a 10-year period yields 6.6 million fewer premature deaths with 86.7 million fewer life years lost in the Optimistic Scenario. Under the Pessimistic Scenario, 1.6 million premature deaths are averted with 20.8 million fewer life years lost. The largest gains are among younger cohorts, with a 0.5 gain in average life expectancy projected for the age 15 years cohort in 2016." Lindenhurst New York casaa.org/news/lindenhurst-ny-…top-a-vape-shop-ban/ The village board has a goal of making a family friendly downtown and vape shops and hookah lounges do not fit their vision of that. Part of this ordinance also bans marijuana dispenseries. (Strange as Massachusetts has very relaxed laws in place see norml.org/laws/item/massachusetts-penalties-2 ) The documentary Alex discusses about Breckenridge CO (www.cnn.com/shows/high-profits) The commonalities dispenseries, tobbaco shops and vape shops now share. (States that have legalized marijuana norml.org/legal/legalization) Starkville MS indoor vaping ban casaa.org/call-to-action/stark…n-indoor-vaping-ban/ Starkville Board of Alderman hearing (FB Video) www.facebook.com/starkville.daily…c_location=group Tobacco 21 materials being updated. Federal Issues Storms have delayed the budget negotiations so we aren't expecting anything until November or even later. Memogate On it's face this memo was so poorly written that it is very suprising that Scott Gottlieb was ever even considered to be the in any postiion at the FDA. The fight for ensuring vaping continues for later generations is a very long and hard fight. Our expectations need to be kept in check. The ANTZ have directly contributed to this situation where something like the memo alleged to come from Gottlieb is taken to heart even when the evidence is not poitning to hos having written it. Don't buy into silver bullet solutions. And we advocate for direct participation by consumers to their lawmakers and this is the only sort of solution that seems viable in this situation.
