Episode 106 - Best Police, Miliary & Protection Dogs with Steve Stoops Jan 20, 2023

Show notes

Talking about some of the strongest and toughest dogs in the world, these dogs are man stoppers. Dogs that are bred tough, train tough and help police and military do their jobs. Who trains these dogs? What does it take to be one of these elite dogs? I s it down for another great conversation with Steve "Zane" Stoops and talk about it. From the top personal protection dogs to the toughest most elite military dogs, Stoops' experience is unmatched.

We talk about how sport training like Schutzhund / IPO / IGP / Ring Sport / KNPV and more affect how these dogs are raised and turn out. The sociability factor in these dogs and the safety vs. liability of sport dogs in general.

Episode 105 - Service Dogs, The Real Ones, the Fake Ones and Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty Dec 09, 2022

Show notes

What is a service dog and why are there so many people faking it? What can be done about it? There's nothing good about fake service dogs and I get to the bottom of it in this podcast with two experts from IACP.

Michele Khol and Kristi Smith are service dog trainers and representatives from the IACP they were really straight forward with their opinions on what a REAL SERVICE DOG is and the issues that plague us. Both have trained many service dogs and are working with IACP, International Association of Canine Professionals to create standards in training and more.

Episode 103 - The Future of Dog Training with Nino Drowaert Nov 03, 2022

Show notes

Nino and I met at the IACP Conference in Sept 2022. We had several really great conversations and I thought sharing these with you would open your eyes about the similarities that dog trainers share and the passion that drives us.

So much of what you see on the Social media is trainers critiquing each other and tearing other trainers down. Nothing could be further from the truth when you get two passionate, professional dog trainers / dog lovers together. This conversation is a short glimpse into the chats we shared in Florida and I think it will be a breath of fresh air to all the crap you are so used to seeing online.

In this chat we talk about so many important topics, but the theme that runs throughout is "where is dog training and where is it heading?" We talk about the mindset, the personalities of dogs as well as dog trainers and the use of rewards and aversive in training. What has been the fallout thought the countries that ban the use of balanced training tools is also a huge topic we address about 1/2 way though the video.

Thanks Nino for a great chat, I look forward to the next one.

Episode 102 - Breeding the Best German Shepherds with Johannes Grewe and Avi Cohen Aug 29, 2022

Show notes

If you want to know about German Shepherds, you want to talk to an expert. In Germany this is called a Körmeister. This person is an authority on breeding. Johannes Grewe is a Körmeister and Avi and I ask some tough questions on the topic of showline and working line German Shepherds.

The questions of what makes for a good German Shepherd and what dogs should we be breeding is always at the top of everyone's list. Talking with Johannes is talking to one of the foremost experts on the breed. Johannes has bred, trained, judged and lived with German Shepherds for most of his life.

Avi and I get down to the serious issues. It's a long podcast but we cover a lot of topics including the evolution of the angulated German Shepherd, the sports of IPO, IGP, Schutzhund... and so much more.

Episode 101 - Catching Child Predators with Digi Dogs - Shannon Krieger Aug 19, 2022

Show notes

Shannon Krieger is an American Hero. From his work in the US Military SOCOMM to his current passion, working with HSI catching child predators he never ceases to amaze me.

If you missed Episode 99 talking about Shannon's work starting the CAD (combat assault dog) program, be sure to watch it.

In this episode we talk about where Shannon's work has taken him and that is investigating child predators online. The future of his work is something we hint at in this interview. We talk about the "Digi Dogs" concept and I think that is something that is really exciting.

Episode 100 - Reflections on My First 99 Episodes Aug 09, 2022

Show notes

In this episode I take a look back at the first 99 podcasts I've done, the people I've talked to, met and learned from. My new friends, the people that changed the way I see things and the hard conversations that I've had... often times with myself.

I think you'll enjoy this short retrospect whether you've listened to all of my podcasts or none. Enjoy and here's to the next 100!

Episode 99 - U.S. Special Operations K9 - Shannon Krieger Jul 14, 2022

Show notes

Shannon Krieger has done it all. He is the guy that legends are made of and movies are about. He's fought in war, been part of the upper echelon of the US Military. He was one of the 3 people who started the use of assault dogs in the military. He survived a helicopter crash and there's more.

My chat with Shannon was epic. The stories he shares are breathtaking, funny, motivational and they will make you feel like you were actually there with him. Whether missions in the Middle East during the most turbulent times or training dogs to do amazing things here in the US, you won't find more amazing stories or a better conversation.

Thanks to Zane Stoops for introducing us.

Episode 97 - Malinois Genetics with Tasha Mesina Mar 14, 2022

Show notes

The Belgian Malinois is becoming every more popular and with that popularity comes problems. People are breeding malinois in their backyards and selling them quick and cheap. This will be a disaster for people and for the breed. I decided to sit down with a very knowledgeable breeder and good friend of mine Tasha Mesina, who has been breeding Malinois for may years. With countless successful litters, sport dogs as well as herding and show dogs, Tasha loves and appreciates the breed and knows her stuff.

This podcast will enlighten you to this wonderful breed, it will educate you on the basic genetics of the breed and hopefully help you make a good decision if you're looking to get a Malinois.
