    Show notes

Manis this week we're back with Bobby Herrera.

Bobby believes that everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed and is an unwavering champion for the underdog. He’s cofounder and CEO of Populus Group—one of the fastest-growing HR services companies in the United States with annual revenue of $500 million and many Fortune 100 customers. As one of thirteen children in a migrant family he learned the value of hard work, rising early and putting in long hours in the fields. After high school, boot camp became his ticket of opportunity. He serves on national community organization boards and is a regular speaker at corporations and service groups. He is a proud Army veteran. Bobby is most proud of his family—his wife Roslyn and their three children Santino, Griffith, and Sofia live in Portland, Oregon.

During our conversation, Bobby shares his infamous bus story and why that day at 17 years old, his life changed. Bobby talked about his days in the military, being the son of a bracero and how he reframed what happened to him into leadership lessons.

Being The Strong One with Angie Sanchez Jun 07, 2020
    Show notes

Listeners, this week we're back with Angie Sanchez' story.

Angie was born and raised in Sonoma Valley as the oldest of 7 children and proud daughter of Mexican immigrants. Coming from a low income, mixed immigration status household she experienced firsthand the struggles and inequalities that many Latino families continue to live with today. At a young age, she understood that to overcome discrimination and inequalities we needed to ensure that Latinos have a place and a voice. That experience led to her commitment to non-profit work for more than twelve years focusing on enhancing the Latino economic, cultural, and civic leadership that reflects the population of the Latino community in Sonoma County. Most recently Angie was awarded the 2019 North Bay Business Journal Latino Leadership Award and North Bay Young Professionals 'Ones to Watch' for 2020.

Currently, Angie has been working on building a foundation to amplify and deepen the voice of Latinos through civic engagement. With the support of the Latino Community Foundation, she created a game called Censotería which is based on the popular Mexican game Lotería. The game was designed as a creative initiative to teach about the upcoming census in an educational, fun, and culturally relevant way. The game is now being used as part of the outreach strategy by other Latino led organizations all over California and other states to educate predominantly Latino immigrant communities about the importance of participating in the 2020 Census.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, attending live music concerts, and BBQing with family and friends.

This episode was recorded as the pandemic began. I want to thank you for supporting the previous episode for non-Black Latinx and how to talk about race with your kids and family. I am continuing to educate myself to continue to show up with content that can help us dismantle our own racial biases. I want to do it with respect to our Black brothers and sisters and our Afrolatinx community also.

Dismantling our own racial bias will take work and I understand one episode is not enough to complete our work. The work must continue on and offline, when the protests are happening on the street and when people decide to go home. At Cafe con Pam we are committed to standing by our core values: Community, Freedom, Curiosity, Impact, and Integrity. This show began with the purpose to amplify Latinx and People of Color.

Below are new resources we have found to help you with your unlearning process towards ending systemic racism in the U.S. and the world.

While EFT and its various applications have produced remarkable results, practitioners and members of the public must take complete responsibility for their use of it. Individuals need to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. EFT is not a substitute for competent consultations with medical doctors, psychologists or psychiatrists. As EFT is not meant to replace qualified medical advice, please consult medical professionals regarding your health. If using EFT while you are taking medication for conditions such as diabetes, high or low blood pressure, thyroid conditions or heart conditions it is advisable that you be closely monitored by your doctor. Do not alter your medication dosage without consulting your doctor. EFT can have an effect on you that may require adjustments to your medication on medical advice. Living In Flow With Cindy Rodriguez Apr 26, 2020
    Show notes

Listeners, this week we're back with Cindy Rodriguez.

Cindy has worked in journalism for over 10 years for companies like NBC, CNN, Latina magazine, and Vivala.com, which she co-launched. One of her greatest successes was assisting in the launch of HuffPost’s LatinoVoices. In 2015, she and her childhood friend co-founded the award-nominated feminist podcast Morado Lens where she and her cohost discuss sex, culture, and embracing intuition as a form of empowerment, all from a Latina’s perspective. She loves creating impactful and diverse content for English-dominant Latinos. Recently, she’s collaborated with two women to launch Only in NoHu, a community project bringing together locals and highlighting North Jersey’s best local events, eats, and more. When she’s not at her 9-5 at PBS as a digital producer, she’s working on Reclama’s spiritual hikes and retreats for women of color. Cindy was born and raised in New Jersey by her immigrant Peruvian parents and identifies as indigenous.

We had so much fun talking, manis. During our conversation Cindy and I talk about:

    • Living in the U.S. as a woman of color.
    • Becoming a journalist and a professor.
    • The beginning and ending of her podcast Morado Lens.
    • Collaboration over competition.
    • Embracing spirituality.
    • Living in flow.

    Show notes

Listeners, we're back this week with Vivian AKA Lori Nava-Schellinger!

During our conversation, Vivian shares her story of assuming a caregiving role, living with people with chronic illness and the importance of having access.

Lori, as her family and friends call her leaves us with lots of wisdom and perspective on living a life filled with purpose and authenticity.

Vivian Nava-Schellinger, leads the National Council on Aging’s ecosystem of national and community partnerships, external engagement of NCOA’s policy priorities, and programs focused on vulnerable populations of older adults. For over a decade, Nava-Schellinger has used equity as a baseline principle when working on large scale reimbursement programs in the private sector, securing funding for health literacy programs in vulnerable communities, and advocating for greater health and economic security across the lifespan for underrepresented populations.

A proud Tejana, born and raised along the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, Vivian has utilized her cultural assets and legal training to efficiently and successfully merge business strategy, development, organizational management, and health policy to ensure that all communities have access to the information they need to make informed decisions about their healthcare and financial well-being.

Before her tenure at the National Council on Aging (NCOA), Nava-Schellinger worked in partnership and fund development within the non-profit sector for an organization aimed at reaching the hard-to-reach and connecting them to health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Vivian resides in Washington, DC, with her husband Jake, and their two rescue dogs (Fernando and Phil-Chepito).

Listeners, we're finally back this week with a new episode with Dr Lydiana Garcia.

Dr. Lydiana Garcia is a Boricua licensed psychologist in LA that specializes in facilitating healing trauma and overcoming life’s adversities via her private practice, The Beyond Resilience Life podcast (bilingual En/Sp), and through her digital program The Healing Village. She is also a wife and a mom of a 4.5 energetic son, and a soon-to-be daughter (due in May 2020). On her free time, she enjoys reading and learning about spirituality, somatic approaches to healing trauma, dancing, traveling and acting.

During our conversation, Dr Lydiana shares her experience of growing up in Puerto Rico, moving to Los Angeles and how she ended up specializing in the area of trauma.

I asked Dr Lydiana her thoughts about trigger warnings because they could sometimes isolate people rather than integrate them.
