Penn State searching for a new defensive line coach

What's the situation with Penn State's search for a defensive line coach? Should fans be concerned about the lateness of John Scott Jr's departure to the NFL? Fitz will discuss his thoughts on the program's latest hiring search and what to expect in the coming days and weeks. They'll also look back on Scott's time and resume that he compiled at Penn State to determine if the team can upgrade the position or if they'll look to replicate what Scott brought to the room.

Of course, they'll also dive into the idea of elevating Deion Barnes to the role of defensive line coach from his current analyst role.

Next, T-Frank and Fitz will recap Jackson, Penn State's newest commitment in the Class of 2024. What does Fitz see in the 6-1 linebacker? How did his relationship with the staff develop? They'll also discuss the relationship between Penn State's perceived weaknesses and the team's acquisition of two middle linebackers in this class.

Finally, T-Frank will give you his list of players that could vault their way into superstardom next fall for the Nittany Lions. He has a list of five offensive and defensive players from his recent articles on the same subject that he'll share with viewers.

Join the BWI Daily Edition at 7 pm on YouTube to discuss which players you think have superstar potential. Also, coming up tomorrow on the BWI Daily Editon, Max Chadwick of PFF will preview the 2023 NFL Combine with T-Frank and discuss Penn State's roster for next fall.

Hoops Show: Penn State Hoops falls silent in second half against Rutgers | Season on the brink Feb 28, 2023
    Show notes

Penn State basketball raced out to a 19-point lead against Rutgers on Sunday night in a pivotal game to keep its NCAA tournament hopes alive. Despite that, the team suffered an epic collapse, failing to register a field goal in the game's final nine minutes. That epic power outage led to a 59-56 loss at home in front of a White Out crowd at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Now, with two games left on the schedule, the season is on the brink for the Nittany Lions, who face must-win games for the rest of the regular season and beyond. Today on the BWI Penn State Hoops show, basketball insider Nate Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the game and how Penn State can quickly pick up the pieces after the loss. They'll be live at noon on YouTube to take your thoughts and feelings about the team's latest loss and the road ahead.

While T-Frank will focus on the game's final nine minutes, Bauer wants to point to the seeds sewn in the first half that ultimately became the issue late. They'll discuss the undercurrent of Penn State's big lead, a strong performance by Cam Wynter, and the shooting struggles for the Nittany Lions...at home?

For his part, Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry thinks that his team stopped doing the little things with such a large lead, and it became a ball game thanks to a lack of focus.

"We came out and started the half great. But then we let our foot off the gas; we let go of the rope, and we didn't do the things that got us that lead. Little plays that don't seem that they were big, but we give them a bucket, and then they get a free throw rebound. We gave them more chances," he said after the game.

"Maybe you foul, and they shoot a free throw and miss it, and that helps close the door. We left the door open too many times. Even when we weren't scoring the basketball, we couldn't come up with timely stops; they would get long offensive rebounds. They hit every timely basket that they needed to make, and we missed a lot of them. But it was because of the things that we did early in the game."

Check out the show at noon to hear more from the head coach who blamed himself for the loss in the postgame press conference. You'll hear comments from Sunday night, and his availability on Monday to help narrate the show.

BWI Daily: Discussion about Penn State's plan to renovate Beaver Stadium Feb 22, 2023
    Show notes

Penn State released a statement last Friday that the university has decided on the future of Beaver Stadium. The program intends to renovate the historic stadium instead of building a new facility on a new footprint.

    That’s big news, right?

Today, the BWI Daily Edition digs into the “if” “and” and “buts” of the statement to parse through the words and explain to fans what the real news was last Friday. Then, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss what the program can do, and what they must do in order to renovate Beaver Stadium and launch Penn State fans into the future of college football.

    Penn State isn’t renovating anything

So instead of building new, the program wants to renovate the existing structure. But that doesn’t mean what you think it means; according to Bauer,

“A renovation is not a renovation, okay? In this context of what Beaver Stadium is, they will tear down what exists in phases so that they can continue to play football in Beaver Stadium while handling it piece by piece, by piece, by piece by piece.”

Next, he and T-Frank discuss what that will do to seat capacity and the badge of honor that Penn State fans have about the 107,000-seat capacity of the stadium.

They also discuss financing and how the athletic department and the university must tackle a project that will likely cost more than half a billion dollars. Bauer doesn’t see this coming off without someone getting upset about where the money comes from.

“What is the appetite going to be if this major project, Beaver Stadium project, demands ticket increases? Right. And not just like five, ten bucks a pop, but doubles ticket costs, doubles seat, licensing costs. What will the appetite be for that ten years from now? I have no idea. I just it’s very fascinating to me for Penn State to be in this position right now because this is all happening currently.”

So what is the landing position, then? What are you aiming for if you’re at Penn State and you imagine a new stadium? The trend nationally is to build smaller stadiums and charge a higher entry price. Is that in the DNA of the program?

“Okay, So I think that there is a middle ground. Look, you’re not going to sell 100,000 seats at Beaver Stadium to just the upper class. It’s not going to happen. But you cannot build an experience that is ultra-elite and only provides a premium experience. It’s just you cannot have that type of capacity. And I don’t think that that’s what they want.”
