The Penn State Nittany Lions didn't get their explosive win on Saturday, but they still got a win over Northwestern on Saturday. Join the BWI Live Postgame Show to discuss the win and the Nittany Lion's 5-0 start. We'll break down the game, what happened, and how Northwestern's defense frustrated the Penn State offense.

Despite the lack of explosive offense, the Nittany Lions scored 17 points in the third quarter to get a large enough lead to keep Northwestern at bay. Quarterback Ben Bryant also went down with an apparent shoulder injury after a third-down sack by Zane Durant that extinguished Northwestern's best chance to make the game competitive.

Penn State defense puts up another elite performance

Not only did Penn State knock out the starting quarterback for Northwestern, but they suffocated the Wildcats offense through most of the game. Penn State racked up 10 TFLs in the competitive portion of the game and corralled four sacks and five QB hits.

Once again, the defense held the line while the offense struggled to generate points in bunches. They limited Northwestern to under 200 yards of total offense and less than a yard per rush. The starting secondary still hasn't allowed a passing touchdown through five games of the year.

    Offense not stuck, but slow

Yet the story coming out of the game once again is the Penn State offense that struggled to generate explosive plays against a wounded Northwestern defense. The offense averaged 3.4 yards per carry on the day and the rushing offense failed to register a run of over 20 yards against a defense that allowed 20+ run plays of that kind through the last two games.

The passing game had more success, but Allar was once again less effective on the road, completing 55% of his passes on the day. Injuries cropped up on Saturday as well. Starting running back Kaytron Allen also missed the second half of the game, and JB Nelson left on a cart in the first half. The team was already without starting lineman Landon Tengwall with a career-ending injury during training camp.

Join the BWI Live postgame show to get your thoughts on air! We'll be taking your questions and comments about the team's win. Were you satisfied with another win that took time to develop? Or are you frustrated with the lack of big plays and dominant offense? We'll take you through the game and discuss today's key points but highlight season-long themes from the team.

    Penn State vs. Northwestern

Penn State head coach James Franklin made no secret that he thinks the lack of big energy is an advantage for Northwestern at home.

These guys are 2-0 win at home. You look at Northwestern, they've typically had good home records. Why? Because it can be challenging to play there. They're used to the environment. Other people may not be. It's going to be very different than what we played in last week. So just being transparent and honest. A we internally motivated? Or are we externally motivated?

    Big plays on the way?

Franklin hasn't shied away from the conversation around explosive plays. It's a goal of his offense and program-building philosophy. So, what's the right level of emphasis to place on big-time offensive gains? We'll discuss that and break down how likely the team is to generate those splash plays this week. Is it more likely to get big run plays or pass plays?

Defensive improvement leads to shut out

The Penn State front seven improved their gap integrity over the first month of the season, culminating in a shutout of Iowa during the 2023 White Out. How hard is it to be gap sound in Manny Diaz's defense? We'll ask Hawkins what he's seen on film from the Nittany Lions and how they're working to get better each week.

Can we expect another shutout this week? We'll discuss that in our predictions segment.

    Penn State vs. Quarters

So far this season, Penn State has played conservative defenses that want to keep a lid on big plays. We'll explain how the quarters defense affects the Nittany Lions' passing attack and their rushing efforts. Head coach Jame Franklin explained how this two-high defense differs from the rest of the coverages in the same family.

"There's a big difference between two safeties, with a cover to philosophy two safeties, with a quarter-quarter half philosophy and then two safeties, that are playing quarters, because really quarters you could really put into, you know, a totally different family because it's a way to play middle of the field open but really technically nine guys in the box," Franklin said.

We'll discuss how that's affected the Nittany Lions' passing and rushing attacks through four games this year.

Tough, but how good are they?

We'll dive into film analysis of the Northwestern defense next and discuss the nature of how this team plays defense. Are they as bad as the rushing stats would indicate? We'll highlight the strength of the Northwestern defense and how they have given up so many big plays in the run game.

As with most games, Penn State will have the advantage on passing downs with an elite pass rush that can threaten any quarterback. But where is there a distinct advantage this week? We'll look at a matchup that Penn State can exploit, especially on third down.

From there, we'll start to give predictions about how this game should go for Penn State from a game perspective. Is this the week Penn State puts explosive plays on the board? We'll explain how and why that's the case.

Finally, we'll examine the top thing we'll watch on Saturday. Tune into the show at 10 a.m. to find out what that is!

    Open practice review

The Penn State football team is doing its best to prepare for a sleepy atmosphere at Northwestern, which is, historically, a challenge for teams who play in front of large, energetic crowds. Head coach James Franklin addressed that after practice on Wednesday.

"Well, I think just being honest. Just being very honest about what it's going to be like. These guys are 2-0 win at home. You look at Northwestern; they've typically had good home records. Why? Because it can be challenging to play there. They're used to the environment. Other people may not be. It's going to be very different than what we played in last week. So, just being transparent and honest. Are we internally motivated? Are we externally motivated? But, for me to act like it's not a factor, it is; you got to get prepared for it," he said.

Bauer and Fitz will discuss what they saw from the offense and defense in the team's preparation for the road battle with Northwestern. They'll also discuss their major takeaways from Franklin's comments about the Penn State football team heading into the game.

Penn State vs. Northwestern game preview

Next, the show will focus on the upcoming game. What will the Nittany Lions do once they step foot on the field? And after a rocky 2-2 start, what sort of team is Northwestern? Fitz and Bauer will give their thoughts about how the team is faring after the firing of head coach Pat Fitzgerald before the season.

They'll also give their score predictions for the upcoming game.

    BWI Mailbag

Finally, we'll open up the BWI Mailbag and answer your questions and comments about the Penn State football team! The Nittany Lions are 4-0 heading into the soft part of their schedule, so what's on your mind as the team turns towards October? We'll take questions from the BWI Mailbag submission thread on the message board and select questions from the live chat. Join us and get your thoughts heard!

Penn State football dissected Iowa on Saturday night in the 2023 White Out Game. Today we'll take our final look at the contest and then look ahead to the rest of the season on the Keystone Kickoff Show, presented on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. We'll start by giving a full review of the Penn State offense and defense before moving on to recapping where the team stands one-third of the way through the season.

Check out the exclusive video broadcast of this regional Pennsylvania radio show on the BWI YouTube channel live at 10 a.m. or here on the site.

    Penn State vs Iowa recap

Before we fully turn the page to the next third of the season, we'll review the Penn State offense and defense and their performance during their 31-0 win over Iowa last weekend. We'll discuss Drew Allar's performance and his methodical, careful approach to the game by describing his day with several important advanced stats.

Next, we'll discuss the ground game and how the team performed by highlighting Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen's day that led to 57 total rushing attempts in the suffocating victory.

Finally, we'll review the defensive performance and explain how Iowa came out desperate and did things counter to their traditional style. We'll also explain the consequences of the fumble by Eric All in the red zone.

Nittany Lions through four games, preview of Northwestern

The Penn State offense has scored 30 points per game, yet the team still needs to completely fire on all cylinders. Where are the areas of improvement for the offense and defense? We'll discuss that and answer fans' questions. Have fans caught up to the play of Caedan Wallace? We answer a question about the long-time right tackle.

Finally, we preview the offense for Northwestern and how that side of the ball likes to play. Head coach James Franklin gave an outline in his press conference on Tuesday.

"They're a no-huddle offense that really -- they can run tempo, but they're more kind of the illusion of tempo so they can see how you line up and then get to the plays they want to run. They base mainly out of 11 personnel. They want to throw the ball. I think that's where they feel like they have the best chance to be successful."

"I do think Ben Bryant, their quarterback, is probably the best pure thrower that we've seen this year."

The Penn State coaching staff got good news on Saturday night when four-star linebacker DJ McClary committed to the program and announced his decision on Sunday afternoon. Check out our recap of that event from this weekend. Snyder will round out our coverage of McClary with the highlights of his conversation with McClary's coach, Ernest Washington.

But the Nittany Lions aren't done yet. Another strong Penn State lean is three-star running back Tiqwai Hayes. Hayes plans on making his college decision on Monday afternoon. Will it be the Nittany Lions? The Aliquippa, PA native is a strong lean in the RPM calculation, and our experts will weigh in on what they think will happen this weekend.

Next, the trio will discuss the Penn State win against Iowa and break down the critical factors that led to the Nittany Lions's win in a decisive fashion. After watching the game back, Fitz and Snyder will give their Monday Morning thoughts.

    Recruiting reaction to White Out

While there aren't any other commitments on the horizon, the White Out game makes a strong impression on players who attended the event. We're discussing the reaction to the White Out in the show's final segment. Which players has Snyder talked to and gotten a response from? The Penn State Football team methodically dismantled Iowa during the 2023 White Out Game. Starting quarterback Drew Allar tossed four touchdowns in the win as the Nittany Lions snuffed out the Iowa offense.

    Allar has another methodical night

Once again, Allar's passing stats weren't explosive, with only 166 yards passing, but the sophomore quarterback tossed four touchdowns in the game. Allar completed 68% of his passes as the Nittany Lions kept things short and controlled.

The Penn State running attack wore down another opponent with 46 carries before the backups came in the game. Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 38 carries and 121 yards in the competitive portion of the game. Penn State head coach James Franklin called his shot earlier in the week about how the game would play out.

"I also think in the Big Ten you look at statistically, we play good defense around here. There's going to be games where we've got to grind it out. You guys know Iowa. This is probably going to be another one of those games where we're going to have to grind it out. It's going to be a four-quarter game," Franklin said on Tuesday.

The problem for Iowa, was that Penn State was the only team dong the grinding. The Nittany Lions had four drives of ten-plus plays and another drive of eight plays, all resulting in points. The offense was unrelenting, going 4-4 on fourth down.

Penn State defense snuffs out another opponent

Once again, the Penn State defense set the offense up for success by smothering the Iowa offense. After an opening drive of six plays for 24 yards, Iowa didn't register another first down before Iowa put in their backups in the fourth quarter. The Penn State defense five straight three-and-outs with two fumble recoveries bracketing that performance.

Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson all forced a tackle for a loss during the game, with Robinson registering his first sack of the season and Isaac putting up his second.

Penn State football takes on Iowa in the 2023 White Out game this evening in Happy Valley. Even the weather is getting in the spirits for this Big Ten clash, with rain and chilly conditions forecast for the game. But what's going to play out on the field this evening?

Join the Penn State Football Tailgate Show, presented in conjunction with Seven Mountains Media, starting at 4:30 outside the Bryce Jordan Center, across the road from Beaver Stadium. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins the show to discuss the game and give his insights into the matchup between Penn State and Iowa. Catch the show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel or locally on 99.5 The Bus in State College.

On today's show, we'll discuss Penn State's offensive plan and how they should attack Iowa and how the defense can counter the Hawkeyes ground attack.

Penn State vs Iowa has deep roots.

As Penn State head coach James Franklin noted earlier, there's a history between his team and Iowa over the years.

"First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument."

But despite Kirk Ferentz's long-standing tenure at Iowa, Franklin is quickly climbing the rankings of veteran Big Ten coaches in his tenth season at Penn State. Consistency like this could breed a great game or complacency. Franklin says that evolving is necessary, but not at the cost of your identity.

"I think that really starts with two things, and that's hiring and recruiting, making sure that you're hiring the right people in the building and recruiting the right people into the locker room, and that you're transparent with them on what they're signing up for," Franklin said earlier this week.

"Then saying, Okay, they have to understand how to blend within the culture and align kind of with the identity, but then also allow a Manny Diaz to be Manny Diaz and play to his strengths and allow his strengths and experiences to add value to our overall organization, be able to have Drew [Allar] that we talked about, bring him into our organization. Like we talked about maybe a week or two ago, not put restrictions on Drew that it limits his development and his ability to be a unique player."

Both Diaz and Allar will be central figures in today's show. Join us live and in person or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel in the live stream!

Penn state faces another tough challenge in Big Ten play to start the 2023 season when the Iowa Hawkeyes come to Happy Valley. It's the 2023 White Out Game and we're here to break down the matchup with five things to watch during the game.

Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube to get a preview of which players, schemes and situations will dictate the matchup between Penn State and its next opponent. We'll be taking your questions and comments on the show, so jump in the live chat to discuss the game.

Also, don't forget to join the Penn State Football Tailgate Show at tomorrow at 4:30, live outside the Bryce Jordan Center. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins us to break down the game and give his thoughts on the upcoming matchup.

Five Things to Watch: Penn State vs. Iowa

Once again, Penn State faces Iowa in a pivotal game early in the season. Head coach James Franklin has gotten used to it over the years.

"First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument.

Again, we love that. We're appreciative of the Big Ten for that. I know it's random - random."

Like many other Iowa teams, this group will represent a challenge in the running game. The team is strong up the middle with stout defensive tackles and physical linebackers. Is this another opportunity for the Penn State offensive line to prove themselves? Or is it another chance for the offensive scheme to pivot? We'll examine this topic from both angles and try to determine how Penn State will play with its ground game.

On the flip side, is this the same old Iowa team? The Hawkeyes have struggled to score points and run the ball up the middle. We'll examine the opponent's success running in the A and B gaps and give film-level clues as to why.

Next, we'll spotlight Drew Allar and the Penn State passing attack. How will the Nittany Lion's first-year starter handle the disciplined and tenacious coverage unit for Iowa in the White Out? We'll discuss the keys to keeping him upright.

Biggest threat for Iowa out for the season

Tight end Luke Lachey's injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Iowa. We'll explain how important he was to the Iowa passing attack. Can the Hawkeyes pivot in one week?

Finally, we'll get to the number-one wrinkle in the game that we find the most interesting. How will Allar fare against one specific coverage? We'll discuss those topics and your thoughts today on the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m.!

The Penn State football team hosts the 2023 White Out game on Saturday. Not only is it an important game where the Nittany Lions host the Iowa Hawkeyes, but it's also the biggest recruiting day of the year. The Nittany Lions will host the top quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class this weekend too. Find out more on the BWI Live Recruiting Show, which airs at 10 a.m. on YouTube.

White Out meaning for Penn State

The White Out has become the landmark college football experience over the last 20 years and has made an impact socially, and strategically for Penn State. It's not just the football team that benefits from the weekend, says head coach James Franklin.

"No, I didn't have an understanding or an appreciation of the White Out. But now, obviously, not only is it impactful for us. You think about how many of our guys talk about their recruiting process and how the White out had a big impact on that. You think about when we got here, a lot of the good players that were on the team, talking about that five-overtime win with Michigan, it was a ton of guys on our roster that had experienced that. So it's meaningful. It's not just meaningful for our football program. This is a huge recruiting weekend for the other 30 sports as well. It'll be in some ways a zoo this weekend."

On today's show, we'll discuss that zoo and outline just how many players will be on campus for the football recruiting weekend. Recruiting insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will share some select names from the list of players planning to attend and highlight names you should know. One public announcement so far is that the top quarterback in the Class of 2025, Bryce Underwood, plans to attend the game. Snyder and Fitz will talk about the impact of Underwood choosing to visit Penn State over other top games this weekend.

But the upcoming recruits are the only players that are making moves this week. The updated On300 for 2024 came out on Monday and Penn State is well represented among the top 300 players nationally. Snyder and Fitz will discuss the players that moved up and down the ranking for the class that signs in December and Januar.

    Open practice report

Penn State held open practice yesterday as well. We'll give you our looks and insights into what went on with the Nittany Lions on Wednesday night. Want to get your thoughts on the show? Join the BWI Live Recruiting Show at 10 a.m. on YouTube so you be a part of the action!
