Stuart Lordan - The Secrets to a Good Pitch Aug 04, 2019
    Show notes

Gavin is joined by Property developer, business consultant, and host of the Executive Juice podcast, to discuss business development and pitching.

During his career, Stuart has mastered the art of the pitch and has come to realise that it all begins with a cohesive story. During this week's conversation, Stuart will share with you his formula for a successful pitch, the fundamental elements that make pitches win with clients, and the pitfalls you should avoid.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Like many who have entered the world of property investment, Stuart was driven by a desire to lead a more leveraged lifestyle, and to take control of his own future, without adhering to the natural formula of work-until-you-retire.
    • When it comes to pitching, Stuart breaks it down into two elements; to be very clear about what the client is looking for, and subsequently structuring the response around their precise requirements
    • Sometimes an ambitious pitch can involve several departments that may even be spread out across several different countries. It's vital to get everyone together around the pitch basis. Stuart always makes sure that everyone involved meets face-to-face at a single location to discuss the pitch in its component parts.
    • Once the cohesive story of the pitch has been established and perfected, the pitch must then be rehearsed several times with the whole team, perhaps even with others present so as to gain new perspectives and feedback.
    • One of the biggest mistakes in pitching is failing to engage the entire audience. Often pitchers will pitch only to the most “important” man in the room, such as a CEO, failing to realise that the group around him or her are equally as important when it comes to decision-making. We should ensure that out pitch takes everyone into account, and is presented impassively towards the company as an entity.
    • It's important to remember that most pitches and meetings are based on the objective of bettering each other or coming together to work as a whole in order to benefit each other. Power games at this juncture are a somewhat outdated method of establishing a pecking order, and should be avoided.
    • There will be occasions when a curveball is thrown, or a question is raised to which you do not have the answer. In these situations, Stuart has found that honesty has proved the most effective response. It's can be okay to say that you don't know the answer.
    • Preparations are all built on connections. One of the benefits of Stuart's experience is that he has a large network. By utilising the network effectively, you can better prepare for who will be in the room, as well as the best ways of presenting to them. Analytical minds will require data. People managers will be more open to stories. Preparation is everything.
    • The most ineffective times of day to pitch are usually after lunch or at the end of the day. Pitches in the morning tend to go better because people are sharper and minds are more active.

Hey Presto! How to Get Out of Your Own Way Aug 01, 2019
    Show notes

This week Gavin Preston introduces a new snack-sized Friday Podcast called Hey Presto! The focal point of this episode is how you can improve your life and your business by learning to get out of your own way. Gavin explains the importance of changing your mind-set & self-perception to overcome the invisible obstacles which are getting in the way of your progression.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Changing your thinking and your mind-set is the first step to getting out of your way, the changes you want to see in your life and business are your own responsibility. You need to step up and commit to the goals you want to achieve in life and accept that you are the one who is going to make it happen. Stop blaming the world around you.
    • Always look for the good in the world and the opportunities presented to you. It is necessary for you to accept situations for what they are in order for you to get up, dust yourself off and move on to the next chapter in life. Grieving a loss is normal for any human but you need to decide when you will draw the line and stop throwing your own pity party.
    • Change the story. You will always be the main character in your story that you tell others about yourself, do you really want everyone to see you as the victim? Wouldn't it be better to get admiration for your achievements? Write the story of victory.
    • Understand that you are good enough. You would not be where you are in life or hold your achievements if you were not good enough. List all of your progress and achievements you've made in your life and/or business in the last 12 months that you can be proud of and use this as evidence that you are good enough.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘What we think about in the present will shake the results we experience in the future'

‘The first thing you can do to get out of your own way is change your thinking, change your mind-set'

‘The story we tell ourselves is the story that bounds us'

‘Write the heroes journey and cast yourself the Hero'

    ‘Vividly imagine yourself winning'

‘Save yourself hours of therapy with one heartfelt statement: You are good enough.'

‘We were not born with the dream to achieve anything in life unless we had the ability to make it happen'

‘When you're climbing the mountain of success, how often do you pause, turn around and admire the view to see how far you've come?'

‘When things look like they're falling apart, they're actually falling into place'

Carol Ann Reid Shares Her ABCDE Formula; Improving Mental Health in the Work Place, Increasing Our Awareness & Developing Our Courage Jul 28, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, Gavin Preston talks to transformational life-coach, author and speaker Carol Ann Reid, who candidly discusses mental health, brain-heart coherence, the highs and lows of social media, mindfulness and her ground-breaking ABCDE Formula designed to allow you to tap into the warrior within.

This empowering, insightful and ultimately reflective conversation will be of benefit to everyone interested in the fascinating topic of the human experience and how to improve it in small, practical ways.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We spend an average of 50% of our waking hours in the workplace. For self-employed people, that number is even higher. As a result, there has been a sharp increase in mental health issues in and around the workplace.
    • Part of Carol's message is to help people understand that no one is defined by their past, or by the mistakes they've made. These are all lessons, and should be embraced. By doing so we come to realise that there is a warrior within us all.
    • One of the main issues driving a low sense of self-worth is the constant and all-encompassing access to comparison. We may be on our own path, but one look to the left or right will show us several others who are doing it better, and are more successful. The answer to this is resilience, and an ability to keep our eyes on our own path.
    • Fitting everything into one day can sometimes seem impossible. Carol works on the principle that there are 72 x 20 minute periods in every day. If we can't take one of those 20 minutes in the morning for ourselves, and one in the afternoon, then we are a slave to the system.
    • A useful method for stamping out our personal obsessions with our lack of time or self-worth is to put a rubber band on our wrists. Each time these negative thoughts enter our head, snap the band and remind ourselves that we do have the time, that we are worthy, and that we can do this.
    • If we feel that we are becoming overwhelmed with internal chaos, we can usually discern the main problems by “brain-dumping” or journalling our thoughts. By doing this, it often becomes clear that this mess of a million problems is actually a small handful that once identified can be ordered and tackled.
    • Carol's Warrior Code System, built on ABCDE is:
      • A - Awareness - An awareness of what's going on around us as well as self-awareness (emotionally and physically)
      • B - Belief - Belief in one's self and belief in the process.
      • C - Courage - The courage to stand in the face of fear and become
      • D - Discipline - The discipline of honouring ourselves. With discipline comes results.
      • E - Evolve - Evolution is the cumulative result of these steps. Trust that it will come.
    • Change is always better and easier to maintain if we take it in small increments. Changes need to fit into our lives, not the other way around. This is a practice that should be applied to business as well as life. And give yourselves credit for these small changes.
    • We have to give ourselves permission to be kind to ourselves. There's a constant urging for us to do more, be more, achieve more. Remember that we are only here once, and it's our duty to enjoy life. Recognise how far you've come.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You can change aesthetically, you can change your appearance, your environment, but wow does it come down to what's going on internally'

‘I'm going to do whatever it takes to help as many people as I can'

‘Your past doesn't have to be your future'

‘It's like trying to ride a bike but looking to the left and right. We get wobbly'

    ‘Our health is our priority'

‘I've got this. I've got this is such a key one'

‘Be a victor rather than a victim of the circumstance'

‘We are human beings, not human doings'

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Having worked on restructuring and turning around a number of businesses I started to look for a business that I could invest in and develop.
    • What grabbed your attention about the company, Boadicea the Victorious?

I liked the shape and look of the bottle. Significantly it had gone bust, was trading in administration and despite this Harrods and Selfridges were still buying it, proving the demand for the product.

    • Was there a ‘what have I done' moment?

We bought a business that had gone bust and owed a significant amount to its suppliers.

I made deals for continued supply based on the bills initially being paid prior to shipping to demonstrate our commitment.

    • Were you concerned about your personal credibility in the beginning?

My credibility was only on my own shoulders and at the start, I didn't know where the business sat in the market.

I found that being honest with people and delivering what you said you were going to deliver earnt peoples trust.

    • When was your first step into international sales?

We initially signed an international distribution agreement that gave them most of the world. We re-negotiated in the following 2 years which resulted in us having ten countries to work in. We have worked to make those countries very strong.

    • What's your view on being lucky in business?

I sincerely believe luck is a part of any business, you can have good luck or bad luck, but the luck is what you make i.t

Everyone has the ability to have luck, but you can influence it becoming luckier by meeting more people and being in more places, but you have to recognise when that luck comes and stares you in the face.

    • How do you talk to strangers?

I have no fear of speaking to anyone along the way because I have a powerful story, a story that people like to hear.

If you get to know people in a social setting they always want to help you there is a ‘can do' attitude.

I absolutely love my journey; I get up every day with a smile on my face because even though there may be some difficulties to overcome most of it is going to be fun and joyful.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘Harrods is my marketing department'

‘I know my industry really well and what my competitors are doing'

‘I will role-play it, over and over in my mind, until I overcome it'

‘If I don't learn something new I have had a boring day'

‘I have an interest in my people and building them and taking them as far as they want to go and think they can go'

The Forumula for Guaranteed Success With David Taylor Jul 14, 2019
    Show notes

‘As an individual, you always have more choices than you think, it's about getting up and trying again'

Gavin is in conversation with David Taylor, Author of 5 books and best known for his brand and books – The Naked Leader

The models he works with simplify concepts making them highly accessible and one of his key models is the ‘Guaranteed Success Model' which they discuss in detail.

The Guaranteed Success Model' was developed by asking ‘Is it possible that we as individuals in teams and organisations do something different when we achieve success from when we don't ?‘

If you want to understand how the model works and why it can work for you, listen in now.

    Sign Up Here: https://bit.ly/biz-pod

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    The Guaranteed Success Model;

    • Know where you want to go
    • Know where you are now
    • Know what you have to do to get to where you want to go, then do it

How do you implement the formula for guaranteed success how is it applied?

    • We make it personal to people, so it's relevant to their lives and its implemented in stages
    • We separate the ‘when' from the ‘how.'
    • We look at the strengths people have and how they can be used.
    • We are changing all the time and when people talk about change they can all mean different things.
    • If you are serious about change then introduce choice
    • Take action stop talking about it and do something. The only way to know if something will work is to do it and this is how we learn
    • If you are prepared to adore, love and celebrate when you are rejected then you are bound to succeed its guaranteed.
    • The choices we make come down to our level of self-esteem at that time which in turn determines the number of choices we have.
    • Most businesses wrap the person around the organisation, we wrap the organisation around the person.
    • If all you do as an organisation is unlock the potential, strengths, talents and genius of the people you've already got then you will achieve success.
    • People are not an asset in your organisation they are the only asset in your organisation.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It's about doing something falling over and getting up again and again and doing something different'

‘Are we brave enough to realise we are all amazing unique individuals with unlimited passion potential and energy'

‘We are on a new mission to unlock the potential of everyone on earth'

‘The difference when we focus on what people can do instead of what they can't is enormous'

‘We live in a world where people are scrolling past content all the time so you need to stand out, create a ‘thumb stopping moment'

Gavin is speaking with Tim Jarvis, Founder of the F&C group and a specialist in how we can use video online.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Marketers focus on the beauty of the content but when it comes to the activation and a strategy for getting it to do what they want it to do they are overwhelmed because there is so much going on in the video content world.
    • In our role as video strategists, we go in and help map out everything needed from the content through to the production, activation and engagement.
    • Whatever marketing you are doing it's to a person with real feelings and who has real passions.
    • They don't want to just click through they want to engage.
    • Conversational marketing must involve interaction with another person at some point who then takes the conversation forward.
    • Video has an incredibly large reach and you might not think what you are producing is  doing any damage but it is if you are not focusing on key things
    • Put thought into what you are creating by ensuring you have got the basics right – the lighting, the audio and how you are presenting yourself.
    • You need to tell a story, answer a question or resonate in some way.
    • If you provide a service you need to understand what pain points your customers are experiencing and then get on camera and talk about those because that is valuable content that will stir a reaction.
    • The majority of online video is watched in silence so captions and subtitles are vital and increase accessibility.
    • Be really clear about what you want people to do when they have watched your video ‘the call to action'
    • To understand the impact of your video, use;
    • Awareness and reach metrics -  views, play rates, shares and impressions
    • Engagement metrics  - likes and dislikes, positive and negative reactions, comments and watch time
    • Conversion metrics - click-through rate
    • Audience behaviour - traffic sources and viewer demographics
    • Typically your audience will spend a lot of time in one place so it's about creating content that engages and interests them and will resonant with them.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Pay attention to quality,  this can be improved instantly through specifically focusing on audio, lighting and your appearance'

‘They don't want to just click through they want to engage'

‘Its about taking marketing and working out how you can  boost it with video'

In part 2 we talked about steps 3 and 4, getting the outcome, being clear about the goal and strategy (how to view it through the lens of values discipline) and the ‘how ‘

Now we are clear about where we are going, have the right mindset and are clear on the bigger ‘why ‘and purpose and have a strategy about how to get there we need to build the capability to scale the business using step 5, capability and step 6 action and accountability from The Strategy Compass business model.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Step 5 - Capability to scale

Using the ‘scale' system will help you build

    Systems

    Cash

    Advance/innovate

    Leadership and culture

    Effectiveness

    Systems

To scale you need to leverage people and systems, spending time on systemisation will help to optimise the process. Always be improving your systems for efficiency and quality and ensure that you have access to a specialist if this is not your area of expertise.

    Cash

Growth is cash hungry. Cash flow is particularly important when you are scaling a business. Plan ahead and you will be able to see potential challenges and take action. Problems in business rarely arise from nowhere, you need to be planning 3, 6, 2 months ahead.

    Advance

You've always got to be advancing or innovating. In business, everything is always changing

Impacting on your business and the relevance of your service or product.

To remain relevant and demand you need to be continually solving a problem or helping your customers to achieve a goal or aspiration.

    Leadership and culture

Your culture is a combination of the values, beliefs, standards and behaviours

Customer service and the quality of the product are indicative of the culture of an organisation.

Culture is set from the top of a business through the actions and behaviours of senior leaders do they inspire, engage and empower?

    Effectiveness

How you can improve personally should be a constant priority.

Blocking time and working on the things that really make a difference is key in the journey to improvement and growth.

Looking at an overview of your business and planning strategically enables you to map out the key things that will shift and move the business forward.

Step 6 - Action and accountability

    Action

If you take action on the things that are going to make a difference everyday it will have a compounding effect. Focus each day on taking the actions that will move you further forward

What one move would have maximum leverage, maximum impact, maximum value?

    Accountability

Find a mentor or someone who is going to hold you to account and agree on a timescale for achieving your goals.

Accountability increases the chance others can count on you to deliver and it also increases the chance for you to count on yourself and that alone brings confidence, courage and commitment.

Roland Frasier Pt.2 First Principles Reasoning, Inversion Thinking & Selling The Eggs Not The Goose Jun 16, 2019
    Show notes

‘Not only are they profitcentres they are cross-selling opportunities'

They discuss in detail with pertinent examples of how to identify the areas for change and the strategies and questions to ask to enable transformation. Listen in to hear how you can make effective changes in your business and convert your cost centres into profit centres.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The 1kx matrix identifies valuation, revenue and profits as areas that should be carefully reviewed. The process begins by looking at revenue and the sources (see the previous episode) followed by the profits and valuation.
    • Profits

E2P for profit involves looking at your biggest cost centres and asking – how can I convert these into profit centres? Your stock could be wholesale to someone else and identifying how you can convert your cost centres into profit centres is key.

    • How can people following the E2P strategy avoid it being a distraction?

You have to have a champion; you have to make it a subsidiary business of the core business with a dedicated general manager who is its champion.

    • Valuation

People should look at monthly recurring revenue, If you have monthly recurring revenue then the risk of you having to go out and find new customers is much less increasing the valuation. Ask the question – How can we turn static income into monthly recurring revenue (MRR) or (ARR) annual recurring revenue.

    • First principles reasoning, tell me about that?

‘We need to take all of our assumptions about something and re-examine them from the ground up' It's about going back to the core.

Inversion thinking is about looking at all the things we don't want to happen so we can be sure we don't get to that place.

The combination of the first principles thinking and the inversion thinking brings a complete approach to any situation or challenge.

    • ‘Sell the eggs and keep the geese'

If you can sell profit centres that don't sacrifice your momentum you can have an unlimited amount of exits because you have an exit building machine, you figurately have a goose that is laying golden eggs, so why lose the momentum have multiple companies and continue to move forward successfully.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Looking at one time sales and focusing on how to make them into recurring revenue increases the valuation'

‘If they can do it with those completely non-recurring  type businesses then you can do it for your business'

‘Not only are they profit centres they are cross-selling opportunities'

‘Your inventory could be wholesale to someone else'
