We now have a lot of data on the 2023 Ohio State football team. Five games worth. And we're torn.

We see areas of major concern -- such as the offensive line and the running game, which go hand-in-hand -- but the Buckeyes are 5-0. And this happens to be a college football season where an elite team does not exist. We also see plenty of things that encourage us about this OSU team, such as the play of the defense.

Ohio State fell behind 10-0 against Maryland on Saturday, but rebounded from there and posted a 37-17 victory over the visiting Terrapins (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten). The No. 4 Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0) had their share of shaky moments on Saturday, but there were also a lot of positives. What exactly did we learn about the 2023 Buckeyes during this game?

They say defense wins championships. Well, Ohio State has by far its best defense since 2019. Is Jim Knowles' unit good enough to lead the Buckeyes to the national title this year? Not that the offense is bad, but we don't envision OSU putting up the kind of offensive numbers it did from 2018-22. So, the offense needs to be good for the Buckeyes to reach their goals and we think the offense is good. But can the defense be great?
