What We Learned from Buckeyes' first day of spring ball Mar 09, 2022

Spring football began on Tuesday for Ohio State and there was a cavalcade of information gleaned. Mitchell Melton has moved from linebacker to defensive end, eight scholarship players will miss all of spring -- including Harry Miller which continues to be a mystery -- and several young players are having great offseasons such as wide receiver Jayden Ballard, and cornerbacks Jakailin Johnson and Jordan Hancock.

In addition, the media interviewed head coach Ryan Day, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson following practice.

On today's show, Dave Biddle flies solo to discuss all the happenings from yesterday, what it means for the 2022 season and more.

Spring football begins tomorrow for Ohio State and a portion of practice is open to the media. We will also interview head coach Ryan Day, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles after practice. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss spring ball kicking off for the Buckeyes, plus:

* What are the main storylines for the Buckeyes this spring?

* What will fourth-year junior Cade Stover's role be this year? Many are presuming he will be the hybrid OLB/DE in Knowles' scheme. Is that a safe assumption?

* Ohio State's basketball team lost to visiting Michigan in the regular-season finale yesterday. This has been a disappointing season for Chris Holtmann's squad, especially lately. Is there any hope they can do damage in the Big Ten Tournament and then more importantly in the NCAA Tournament?

It is a jam-packed Friday version of the show as Jonah Booker drops by for his usual end-of-week visit. Most of the show is dedicated to Ohio State football and we end with a taste of Buckeye basketball. On the agenda:

* Ryan Day said this week that the Buckeyes' loss to Michigan continues to fuel his team during the offseason.

* Day also said he knew in his gut that he needed to make a change defensively after the Alabama game in the 2020 national championship contest. The Oregon game confirmed it. And now Day has his man in Jim Knowles.

* Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson are fast. Faster that most people expected when they ran the 40 at the NFL Combine yesterday.

* The up-and-down season continues for OSU's hoops team. And "big ups" to them for their 80-69 win over visiting Michigan State and the legendary Tom Izzo last night. Izzo took a shot at Ohio State's fans and the environment at the Schott after the game. He wasn't wrong, but was it his place to say it?

State of the Ohio State Basketball Program Address Mar 02, 2022

There's bad losses. And then there is ... whatever the hell happened to Ohio State's basketball team last night. The Buckeyes -- who were 15-point favorites and had a win probability of 95.5 percent -- were beaten by Big Ten cellar dweller Nebraska 78-70 at the Schott. And that came on the heels of OSU's upset loss at Maryland on Sunday when the Terrapins dominated to the tune of 75-60.

We can all be prisoners of the moment at times and overreact, especially when it involves our sports teams. However, this is year No. 5 of the Chris Holtmann era at Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 18-9 overall and 11-7 in Big Ten play, and they are a lock to make the NCAA Tournament. But should the program be further ahead at this point? It's time for the State of the Ohio State Basketball Program Address. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle for that, plus some quick thoughts on spring football opening for the Buckeyes on Tuesday.
