Cornered market | QB shuffle coming? Feb 16, 2023
    Show notes

Luck comes in many forms. For Ohio State, there is some of it involved with recruiting.

Given the Buckeyes' stellar track record for securing commitments from elite Ohioans, what the state has to offer in a particular recruiting cycle can be impactfully lucky.

In Ohio's Class of 2024, there are two clearly impactful cornerbacks boasting Buckeye offers: Glenville's Bryce West and Springfield's Aaron Scott.

Our Bill Kurelic - who just lobbed a Crystal Ball pick for an Arizona defensive back that we discuss - and Mark Porter join for a deep dive on package deals, QBs to watch, huge visit weekends ahead and even a little MACtion.

Beating Michigan = Successful season? | Bax defends Holtmann take Feb 15, 2023
    Show notes

After asking the question, we have the consensus answer. On Monday's show, we asked what would make Ohio State's 2023 football season a success in your book. Most fans said beat Michigan, win the Big Ten and see where the chips fall from there. Matt Baxendell basically agrees with the consensus, but he just wants a win over the Wolverines to consider 2023 a success. Bax joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, talk about the Buckeyes' offensive line this season and more football topics.

And we close the show with Bax defending his controversial take on Chris Holtmann from last Sunday's Bucket. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish.

    Marshall's plan? | Bolden beautiful? Feb 14, 2023
    Show notes

    The Fong is back.

247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong returns to the show with verve and energy. Ohio State has shifted recruiting focus to the Class of 2024 and so have we.

It's an impressive list of names we focus on today.

K.J. Bolden: Georgia native with ties to Ohio State's staff?

Jordan Marshall: Will the 'state of Cincinnati' strike again?

Elijah Rushing: Love for Larry Johnson?

Sammy Brown: Can OSU outdo Clemson and Georgia for SECish prospect?

We also offer the latest on Miles Lockhart, Ify Obidegwu and Steve shared his scouting report on transfer cornerback Davison Igbinosun.

What are your expectations for Buckeyes' 2023 football season? | The 'beats' go on for hoops squad Feb 13, 2023
    Show notes

What are your personal expectations for Ohio State's 2023 football season? What would make the season a sure-fire success in your book? Is it still "national championship or bust" as many felt in 2022? Would the Buckeyes defeating Michigan and winning the Big Ten make the season a success in your mind, regardless of what happened from that point on? Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss that, a rare Buckeye-less Super Bowl, and the "beat" going on for OSU's basketball team (or should we say beats, plural, since the Buckeyes are now mired in their longest losing streak in 25 years (6 games) and are just 1-10 in their last 11 contests. They reached a new low -- literally -- by scoring just 41 points in their 21-point loss to visiting Michigan State yesterday. And somehow the Buckeyes were favored in that game! It is embarrassing and unacceptable for this to happen in the sixth year of Chris Holtmann's tenure, but as we've pointed out on the show many times recently, there are $20 million reasons why Holtmann won't be going anywhere after this year. Right or wrong (we're leaning heavy toward the latter) that is the reality of the situation. The other reality to the situation is OSU's hoops squad has become unwatchable and the excuse-making for Holtmann needs to stop.

But we'll mostly talk about Ohio State football. Don't worry.

All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish.

How much will Buckeyes' defense improve in 2nd year under Knowles (and with Laurinaitis around)? Feb 10, 2023
    Show notes

How much will Ohio State's defense improve in Jim Knowles' second season as coordinator, and with James Laurinaitis now on board to help with the linebackers? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, the latest on the NIL collective front for Ohio State, another bad loss for the Buckeyes' men's basketball team and more.

All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish.

Bucknuts Happy Hour: Talking new roles for Buckeye football coaches Feb 09, 2023
    Show notes

Patrick Murphy is back with another edition of the Bucknuts Happy Hour and the main focus is on the Buckeyes' football coaching staff.

    In-state optimism | 'Animal' instincts Feb 09, 2023
    Show notes

How does a program craft an elite recruiting class?

It helps to be located in a state replete with elite football players.

    Welcome to Ohio.

The Class of 2024 has a chance to foster a special in-state haul for the Buckeyes.

Our Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to discuss that and get into which linebackers new coach James Laurinaitis is targeting on the trail.

Also: Sam Hubbard ... what can't he do?

    Mailbag Wednesday Feb 08, 2023
    Show notes

It is Mailbag Wednesday as Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show and answers questions from Bucknuts subscribers.

    * Will Ohio State have a 1,000-yard rusher in 2023? How many Buckeyes will reach 500 rushing yards this year?

    * Larry Johnson is a great man and has had a great career. But has OSU's D-line coach "lost his spark"?

    * What percentage of plays do we expect will be run plays versus pass plays this season? Did Kevin Wilson "remind" Ryan Day to run the ball at times? Who will do that now? Justin Frye?

    * Why is Lathan Ransom not in consideration to be benched? Shouldn't the starting safeties be Sonny Styles, Ja'Had Carter and Kye Stokes?

All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish.

Offseason Olympics | Hardwood hope? Feb 07, 2023
    Show notes

    Quarterback? Tackle? Running back?

Who starts for Ohio State this fall? Who backs them up? Who decides to boogie?

Good questions ... and we try to answer.

Pat Murphy joins for a spirited chat on who can move into the offensive spotlight during the offseason.

We dive deep on that vibe before talking spring transfers, basketball tomfoolery and much more.

Should football early signing period be in July? | Hoop nightmares Feb 06, 2023
    Show notes

Should the early signing period in college football be in late July instead of December? We have thought so ever since the early signing period was implemented. Apparently, Mark Pantoni agrees wholeheartedly. Will the rule be changed?

Also on the Ohio State football front, will Brian Hartline be the main playcaller for the Buckeyes in 2023? It will undoubtedly be a collaborative effort. But will Hartline be the main guy calling the plays? Or will it still mostly be Ryan Day?

Hoop dreams? More like hoop nightmares for Ohio State fans. The Buckeyes lost at Michigan yesterday and are now an embarrassing 1-9 in their last 10 games. But there are likely $20 million reasons why Chris Holtmann is not going anywhere after this season.

Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss those topics and more on the Monday 5ish.
