Buckeye Talk Legacy Pod: Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud Jan 31, 2023
    Show notes

Buckeye Talk unveils a new podcast form with this first episode in what is hoped to be a series of Buckeye Talk Legacy pods looking back on the careers of recent Ohio State stars.

First up is quarterback C.J. Stroud, as Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means talk through Stroud's arrival in Columbus and his three years in the program and two years as a starter.

To help tell that story are clips from two Stroud interviews, one from February 2020 when he was an early enrollee freshman looking forward to his OSU career, and another from November 2022 when he was looking back and knowing that he was nearing the end of his OSU career.

Along the way, Doug, Nathan and Stephen discuss these aspects of Stroud's career:

    • How he got here
    • Year 1 as a Buckeye
    • Low Point
    • High Point
    • Turning Point
    • What if he hadn't been a Buckeye
    • Describe him in one word
    • Did he exceed, meet or not quite reach expectations?
    • Where he fits in Ohio State history

We hope you enjoy our first Buckeye Talk Legacy attempt. Thanks as always for listening.

Should Ezekiel Elliott have a Heisman Trophy? Jan 26, 2023
    Show notes

On this Thursday episode of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises wants to know -- Have you ever ridden a horse?

But mostly Doug takes a long look at the 2014 Heisman Trophy race and what would have happened for Ezekiel Elliott if the voting was after the playoff, which it what Doug thinks should happen when the playoff moves to 12 teams in 2024.

Would Elliott have won the 2014 Heisman if it was a postseason award, instead of voted on in December? As it happened, Elliott didn't even finish in the top 10.

This episode is playing off the latest College Football Survivor Show, where Doug and and Shehan Jeyarajah debated this strenuously in a larger, general context. Check out that show wherever you listen to Buckeye Talk.

    Thanks for listening.

On this Wednesday episode of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means are breaking down Ohio State's defensive depth chart after doing the offensive depth chart on the Tuesday podcast. Once again, they reference their July 2021 podcast that predicted how good this 2023 team might be.

First (0:30), they look at the defensive line.

Then (26:43) it's time for the safeties, and then the cornerbacks.

Finally (1:01:00) they get to the linebackers.

To do that, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means look at the offensive depth chart for the fall. They also reference their July 2021 podcast that potentially projected the 2023 Buckeyes as a college football powerhouse. How much was right and wrong?

First up (0:35) they look at the quarterback battle with Kyle McCord and Devin Brown and what might be happening if Quinn Ewers was still in Columbus.

Then (30:25), they talk about what another year of C.J. Stroud would have been like, and then they move on to the offensive line for next season, where the Buckeyes have some holes to fill.

Finally (1:20:12), it's time to talk tight end, receiver and running back.

It's good to be back, and thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk.

How we did on our Mark It Down Monday statistical predictions for Ohio State's 2022 season Jan 16, 2023
    Show notes

Ohio State football ended up right where it expected to be at the end of the season -- back in the College Football Playoff and going toe to toe with Georgia for a shot at the national championship.

The route the Buckeyes took to the get there, especially as it pertained to offensive production, deviated from our expectations. Nathan, Doug and Stephen revisit their Mark It Down Monday statistical leaders prediction episode from last summer.

Injuries derailed some predictions. Others were thrown off when new stars emerged. What did the final stat leaders tell us about what the Buckeyes will look like in 2023?

Brian Hartline named Ohio State's offensive coordinator, plus OSU Rants Jan 13, 2023

On this Friday Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com, Doug Lesmerises opens with a discussion of Brian Hartline's promotion to offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

    After that, it's rants.

Ohio State's 2023 QB season: Kyle McCord, Devin Brown and the better-than-usual quarterbacks they'll face Jan 12, 2023
    Show notes

On this Thursday Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means are talking all about Ohio State quarterbacks in 2023 and the quarterbacks the Buckeyes will face in 2023.

    That includes:

    * Well, it’s not actually all quarterbacks, because the pod starts with OSU center Luke Wypler heading to the NFL Draft and Matthew Jones likely moving from right guard to center.

    * The recent history of Ohio State quarterbacks earning first-team Big Ten honors and a look at whether Kyle McCord or Devin Brown should do that again in 2023.

    * The rash of transfer quarterbacks in the Big Ten West and how good they might be.

    * The two five-star recruits expected to start for Michigan and Penn State in the Big Ten East.

    * The veteran quarterbacks at Notre Dame and Western Kentucky who could challenge Ohio State in non-conference play.

It’s (almost) all 2023 quarterback talk, and thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk.
