#31: “We Are The Prey” with Dr Peter Breggin Aug 05, 2021
    Show notes

Welcome back for Part 2 of our interview with Dr. Peter Breggin , the “Conscience of Psychiatry”.

We pick up from last week’s show in our discussion on the history of psychiatric treatment reform, to the parallels with public and social control during Covid.

Today we dive into the basis of his new book- Covid 19 and the Global Predators

We discuss the big picture with the events before and during the Covid 19 worldwide pandemic and the international intertwining of big power. Is the response to Covid 19 based on science and acts of goodwill towards mankind? Or is it really a responsive action by predatory capitalists not letting a black swan event go to waste? Listen to his summary and decide for yourself!

Peter R. Breggin MD is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and former Consultant at NIMH who has been called “The Conscience of Psychiatry” for his many decades of successful efforts to reform the mental health field. His work provides the foundation for modern criticism of psychiatric diagnoses and drugs, and leads the way in promoting more caring and effective therapies. His research and educational projects have brought about major changes in the FDA-approved Full Prescribing Information or labels for dozens of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. He continues to educate the public and professions about the tragic psychiatric drugging of America’s children.

As a medical-legal expert, Dr. Breggin has unprecedented and unique knowledge about how the pharmaceutical industry too often commits fraud in researching and marketing psychiatric drugs. He has testified many times in malpractice, product liability and criminal cases, often in relation to adverse drug effects and more occasionally electroshock and psychosurgery.

During the 1970s Dr. Breggin began his reform work by organizing an international campaign to stop the resurgence of lobotomy and other psychosurgery. He was a huge advocate and voice for the ending of psychosurgery which led to the creation of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology.

Dr. Breggin has authored dozens of scientific articles and more than twenty books, including medical books and the bestsellers Toxic Psychiatry and Talking Back to Prozac. Two more recent books are Medication Madness: The Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Suicide and Crime and Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal: A Guide for Prescribers, Therapists, Patients and their Families. His most recent book is Guilt, Shame and Anxiety: Understanding and Overcoming Negative Emotions.

#28: “Losing a Child” with Dr. Marcy Larson Jul 15, 2021
    Show notes

Imagine that one moment you are going about your everyday life, the next instant you experience your child’s life vanishing in front of you. This is the story and journey of grief recovery from our dear guest Dr. Marcy Larson. She graciously shares her personal story, how it affected her ability to practice Medicine and how she created a podcast to help not only her personal healing but others as well.

The loss of a child is the biggest loss one can ever suffer. Openly discussing grief is something our culture is not very adept at. Knowing what to say to those who are mourning is difficult and often we say the wrong things to people, trying to be helpful in our ignorance.

This episode is for EVERYONE. Whether you personally have experienced loss, know someone who has, or are in the Medical profession counseling a patient. Grief and life loss is something we will all face in our lifetime.

Marcy Larson is a Pediatrician, wife and mother of four children. She is passionate about caring for children and families. After losing her son Andy, she was inspired to create a weekly podcast called “Losing a Child: Always Andy’s Mom”. The show offers healing and hope to bereaved parents and those who support them. It offers helpful advice and support to make the grief journey a little bit less difficult. Find her here at andysmom.com and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

    #27: ICD WHAT??? : “A Doctales with Cocktails Episode” Jul 08, 2021
    Show notes

We know you’ve been waiting.. Yes, it's Doctales!

ICD codes are the bane of a doctor’s life. We languish in our pain with the most absurd ICD-10 codes we have heard of. If it has happened, it exists as a billing code: walked into lamp post, sucked into jet engine, attacked by orca, problem with the in-laws? Yes these make their way into the insurance companies hands to process the cause of your visit.

If you were injured at the opera house, ever had bizarre personal hygiene, had an accident with a land yacht… well it has been cataloged!

This episode has been LONG overdue! We have missed laughing on a doctales and it’s been so refreshing to let loose today. Grab a cocktail, or just laugh along on your commute. Either way, laughter is the best medicine!!

By the way, we are sipping on Ciroc! Iced Mango Ciroc with a splash of lemonade makes a great summer sipper. AAAAhhhh

#24: Drugs In my Pocket (and I don't’ know what to do with then) Jun 17, 2021
    Show notes

This week we are talking about “drugs”, specifically the world of PBMs with Dr. Lee Strandberg. Pharmacy Benefit Managers(PBM) are the middlemen between your pharmacist and your prescription and your insurance company. Yep.. more middlemen.

If you have never heard of the term PBM, well you are not alone. Most people have no clue that they exist, how they work and how the cost or medications is controlled, negotiated or paid for. They are the one paying the pharmacist for your medication! While there are approximately 60 PBS, the 3 largest ones currently control 80% of the market.

We discuss both arms of the pharmacy world- how the pharmacy acquires the medications and purchases them. Hang on as we unravel the mysterious chain of events on how the pharmacy gets paid by the PBM and how they negotiate the prices with your insurance company.

We do get a little deep in the weeds on cost control and price negotiations, so pay attention. We only WISH that getting a Zpack could be as simple as buying a head of lettuce from your local farmers market.

Dr. Lee Strandberg is our guest this week who intimately knows the ins and outs of the complex layers of the pharmacy world. He is a Professor Emeritus, Pharmacy Economics and Public Health Oregon State University and was Director, Managed Care pharmacy for SHS Plans from 2005-2011. He was appointed by Oregon Governor Kitzhaber to the OR Health Policy Board, Medicare-Medicaid Integration of Care and Services work Group which wrote part of the CCO and reporting structure. He was a committee member on the OR Evidence Based Review of Prescription Drugs Preferred Drug List. During the past 40 years he has presented papers, seminars and consulted on the impact of pharmaceutical use on health care costs and quality. He has been a consultant to governmental agencies in Australia and Canada. He currently works as a Pharmacy Director for Kannact, Inc.Don’t forget to reach out to MR Insurance Consultants where their goal is to assist physicians in obtaining the most comprehensive coverage available to fit their unique situation.
