98. Silver Diamine Fluoride: Stopping Cavities, Expanding Prevention Sep 08, 2025

This week on Brush with Britt, I’m joined by Shelley Brown, RDH, for an eye-opening conversation about silver diamine fluoride (SDF) — one of the most exciting tools we have in modern preventive dentistry.

Alana Hall, MHA, RDH, is a mission-driven dental professional with over 15 years of experience across military, academic, and civilian settings. She began her career in the U.S. Army as a Dental and Preventive Dentistry Specialist, delivering care in both stateside and deployed environments. After earning her dental hygiene degree, Alana advanced into roles as a Registered Dental Hygienist, Clinical Care Coordinator, and Adjunct Professor, where she combined clinical excellence with leadership and education.

Today, Alana practices in a private periodontal office in South Carolina, where she provides comprehensive periodontal care and patient education. I, as a 2020 graduate, completed my exam on a live patient while Marie, a 2022 graduate, took her exam on a manikin. We go in depth about our personal experiences taking the exam and what we think testing should look like in the future. We have the tough conversation about the live patient exam being unethical and how it brings students into situations that are potentially unsafe. In the episode @emmatalksteeth and I reveal the shocking truth about bacteria and virus transfer. We review the spread of herpes (cold sores), cavities, and periodontal disease. How often do we finding ourselves at events where family and friends want to kiss the baby and we find ourselves wanting to yell "NO! PLEASE DON'T KISS THE BABY!" but we don't know how to say it without being weird or awkward. Emma shares great tips for how to go about telling family and friends "No Kissing The Baby". In addition to the spread of herpes, we cover the spread of bacteria that causes cavities and periodontal disease through saliva. Emma and I share the importance of a thorough oral hygiene routine to keep your mouth happy and healthy after coming in contact with these bacterias.
