    025 - Matt Valentine Aug 14, 2018
    Show notes

We're back with an in depth conversation with Matt Valentine, guitar player and one half of the heavy vibe duo that is Wet Tuna. Matt's been cooking up serious soundwaves for some time and we dip into the story of who he is and what he's after in our chat. There's a few stops along the way as we discuss his influences, past work, Wet Tuna, and, of course, Grateful Dead.

After or as you listen, be sure to check out the Wet Tuna website https://wettuna.blogspot.com and grip a copy of their album "Livin' The Die" or the very limited live release "Great Wet Wonder". They've added a bunch of tour dates to the ones mentioned on the show so check out their website!

Let me remind you that the Brokedown Podcast is part of the Osiris Podcast Network. Show notes

In this episode we have Grateful Dead keyboardist, Tom Constanten, on to talk about the upcoming tour from Live Dead '69. Then Will Soll of Prana Crafter joins us to discuss his new album and, of course, some good old Grateful Dead.

As mentioned in the episode intro, we still have shirts that are on our redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something with our sweet new logo. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!)

    023 - Summer Tour Sampler Jul 10, 2018
    Show notes

It's July, the Summer heat is here to stay and there's no better time to be on the road. In this episode, we head out on the road to check in with Dead & Company and Phil Lesh. Both bands are doing some great things on stages all over the place so I've pulled a couple great jams to either cool down or heat up your listening space. These jams can do both. After that, we reach into the vault for some good old Grateful Dead.

    We even take a request!

    022 - Summer Jams Jun 26, 2018
    Show notes

Hey there, Dead Freaks! It's summer time and the time is right for long, sick jams. This episode finds me digging into a serious dose of those along with some other great tunes. No guest, not a lotta nonsense, just good old Grateful Dead. I sat down on a rainy afternoon at the beach and sifted through shows to find this for you. I hope you dig this stuff as much as I.

    Selections in this episode:

Hiss Golden Messenger: 2016-11-15 Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - Brown Eyed Women (Thanks to EricPH & NYCTaper. Find the whole show here.)

Grateful Dead: 1974-07-25 International Amphitheater, Chicago, IL

Excerpts from Set One & Two -

Black Throated Wind, Row Jimmy , Weather Report Suite > Let It Grow, Scarlet Begonias

It Must Have Been The Roses, Jack Straw, Dark Star > Stella Blue

    021 - Featuring Phil Cook Jun 05, 2018
    Show notes

Hey there, Dead Freaks! This go-round I fill you in on how things went down when Osiris went to Delfest and have a great conversation with Phil Cook. Then, of course, we get into some Grateful Dead.

Phil shares details on his new album, People Are My Drug, and his band, The Guitarheels. We also talk about his work with Hiss Golden Messenger and covering the Grateful Dead. We’ve included a great new track, “Steam Powered Blues”, from the new record. You can order the record (in whatever format suits you) from Phil's website: PhilCookMusic.com

As for the Grateful Dead music in this episode, the show was released as Dave's Pick's 20 but, we're listening to a fine Jim Wise audience recording. As always, details are in the shownotes: https://brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com/2018/06/021-featuring-phil-cook.html

020 - Back To Oregon with Jeff Conklin May 22, 2018
    Show notes

This week we resume our trek up the Oregon trail with WFMU host, fellow Dead Freak, and walking musical compendium, Jeff Conklin. As before, Jeff has selected a few more great tracks from the Grateful Dead's many visits to Oregon. We listen to and discuss those along with some other great stuff including the magic of audience tapes, and the fabulously deep catalog of fellow traveler Matt Valentine.

Please consider heading over the WFMU.org to check out Jeff's show, The Avant Ghetto- which mixes all manner of deep psych, folk, and Grateful Dead- along with a mess of other great programs. WFMU is listener-supported free-form radio based in Jersey City but those of us outside their range can spin shows from their online archive. If you dig what you hear, please consider donating. If you use the twitter, you can follow Jeff @avantghettonyc.

We've gotten some terrific and kind feedback on the new logo and, as of now, you can cop a t-shirt (men's and women's available) and represent the BrokedownPod everywhere you go. You can also get stickers and mugs if you are into sticking or drinking things. Head over to our redbubble shop and grip one today.

Don't forget to follow the @BrokedownPod twitter account for regular news, live tweetstorms of shows as I listen, and other minutiae. We also have an Instagram account. 019 - On The Oregon Trail with Jeff Conklin May 08, 2018
    Show notes

Listeners and Dead Freaks, this episode features a terrific chat with WFMU host, Deadhead, and encyclopedia on far-out music of all kinds, Jeff Conklin. Jeff's show on WFMU is The Avant Ghetto and there he spins all manner of psychedelic and experimental tunes including some terrific selections by our beloved Grateful Dead. We talk about his development as a Deadhead and then dug into studying the vast riches resulting from the Dead's many visits to the great state of Oregon.

You can check out playlists and stream archived editions of Jeff's WFMU show here and, if you like what you hear, please consider becoming a supporter of WFMU's mission to keep freeform radio alive by donating. If you use the twitter, you can follow Jeff @avantghettonyc.

We had no choice but to spread this out into two episodes so there is more music and conversation coming up in a couple weeks. So please do enjoy this and come back for more!

Also, please admire our new logo and watch this space as well as the BrokedownPod twitter account for t-shirts and other merch. A percentage of the proceeds will go to Sean, who did the amazing design work. The rest will be invested in hosting and equipment needs.

So please consider spending a few minutes to take the survey here.

    018 - 50, 40, & 30 Years Ago Apr 17, 2018
    Show notes

Coast, at least) the trees are blooming and the coldest days seem like they might be behind us. As such, I thought I might put together something to accompany the gradual warming, a little mix to go along with the first open-window days of the season. Plus, I did promise you kind and patient listeners a shot of good old Grateful Dead.

    Wait no more.

This mix reaches back 50, 40, and 30 years to 1968, '78, and '88 for material. The tracks range from jams to cowboy songs and it hangs together despite the disparate eras represented. After the music, I do spend a few minutes detailing where the cuts come from so as to provide a little bit of context. So pull back the curtains, throw up the sash, crank the stereo and get on down.

We'll be back in May with a guest some more Grateful Dead. In the meantime, please, don't forget to follow the @BrokedownPod twitter account for regular news, live tweetstorms of shows as I listen, and other minutiae. We also now have an Instagram account. If you like pictures of things, you can find that here: BrokedownPod Instagram. Also, if you use iTunes, please consider posting a review as it really help get the word out.

    017 - Golden Gate Wingmen Apr 03, 2018
    Show notes

We've got a special and unusual episode for you this time around. I had the great fortune to join my good friend and head of Osiris, RJ Bee, at a Golden Gate Wingmen show late last month. The show, at The Hamilton Live, was the kick-off for a short tour and it was a blast. To make things even more exciting, we got to meet and interview the band. Jeff Chimenti (keys, vocals), John Kadlecik (guitar, vocals), Jay Lane (drums, vocals), and Reed Mathis (bass, vocals) were friendly, forthcoming, and entertaining.

You'll hear our interview with the band and about an hour's worth of tunes from the show in this episode. Thanks to RJ Bee for making the interview happen. Thanks also to DC Music Review for allowing me to share a couple of Jason Herman's beautifulphotos from the night.

Thanks as well to taper Alex Leary for making and sharing his excellent recording with us.

RJ is the founder of the Helping Friendly Podcast as well as the Osiris Podcast Network and an all around great guy so please take a minute or two to check those sites out.
