035 - Winter Tour '79 pt. 1 Jan 08, 2019

Show notes

It's 2019 and my Grateful Dead calendar puts us exactly 40 years out from the final tour with Keith and Donna. In this episode we take the first half of that tour into consideration and spin some jams hot enough to defrost your microbus. So stand up or sit down and enjoy.

We've got a bunch of stuff lined up for this upcoming year so please tell your friends, to get on the bus and subscribe so they don't miss a thing!

If the holidays have passed you by and you still didn't get that killer shirt from or for your loved one, Brokedown Podcast t-shirts are still available on our Redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!) Thanks.

034 - A Day Between Dec 27, 2018

Show notes

The year is rapidly closing but here's one more episode before 2019 hits. This one is a look at some of the shows played on 12/27 over the years. We've got Grateful Dead tunes from several eras of the band and some nice jams along with. So ice the bubbly, spike the last of the egg nog and get ready to boogie.

I will note, there's one song in the mix that I failed to back-announce. It was sort of a last-minute addition– a bonus track, if you will. Don't let that mix up get you down. I hope you enjoy all of this stuff and look froward to more great stuff to come in the new year.

As always, please remember that we have shirts on our redbubble page. Please consider heading over there to cop a little something with our sweet new logo. In addition to ladies and men’s shirts, we've got stickers, and things that hold coffee (or tea!)

033 - Generational Band Dec 11, 2018

Show notes

It's December and temperatures may be falling but we've still got hot jams for you. Inspired by a Bob Weir quote in this recent Rolling Stone interview, this episode digs into where Grateful Dead music goes in the next fifty years. We'll check into Dead & Company, Phil & Friends, Keller Williams, Golden Gate Wingmen, and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Then, we'll spin some terrific Grateful Dead.

032 - Dire Wolves Nov 27, 2018

Show notes

It's late November and the year is almost gone. In this episode we chat with Jeffrey Alexander of Dire Wolves. They've got a new album out called Paradisiacal Mind which you can grab from Bandcamp or on vinyl from Feeding Tube Records in the US or Cardinal Fuzz in the UK/EU. It's a great trip and worth your time.

We dig into the origins of the band and their unique sound before spinning a track from the new album. Then we tap into Jeffrey's past as a deadhead and taper. Naturally we get to talking about shows he saw and that leads us to spin some terrific Grateful Dead.

As mentioned on the show (for a change), you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site.

Don't forget to follow the @BrokedownPod twitter account for regular news, live tweetstorms of shows as I listen, and other minutiae. We also have an Instagram account with the same handle. If you like pictures of things, you can find that here: BrokedownPod Instagram. Also, if you use iTunes, please consider posting a review as it really help get the word out.

031 - JGB Fall '93 with Lenny Stubbe Nov 06, 2018

Show notes

In this episode, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the final Jerry Garcia Band East Coast Tour. In Fall of '93, the JGB played a mess of dates back East (as they say) and a whole lot of fun was had. Our guest, Lenny Stubbe was there in Buffalo (11/5/93) and reports his recollections and overall impressions of the tour. Your host attended a couple of these as well.

Naturally, talking about music leads to listening to music and some choice selections from the tour are included for your pleasure.

As mentioned on the show, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site. Order now to be ready for the holidays!

030 - One Eleven Heavy Oct 24, 2018

Show notes

Hey there, Dead Freaks! In this episode we talk to James Toth and Nick Mitchell Maiato about their new group One Eleven Heavy and their recently released album, "Everything's Better". We talk separately about their history, the formation of this group, and their Grateful Dead fandom. We also manage to spin a cut from the record and a whole mess of Grateful Dead tunes.

The band is heading out on the road next month so head over to our website, brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com to have a look at the tourdates and see if you can catch them playing near you.

029 - MSG '90 Oct 09, 2018

Show notes

Hey there, Dead Freaks! It's October and although I'm ready for cooler weather, I'm still into talking about September. Specifically, September 1990. We're looking back to that first run of shows at Madison Square Garden with Vince and Bruce joining the Grateful Dead on the keys. While this era is often maligned, there's great stuff to be heard. In fact, this run has spawned a Dick's Picks (#9) and a Road Trips release! We're combing through what's to bring you some great playing from the dawning of a new era.

I completely failed to mention the merch in this episode (AGAIN) so I'll just add here, you can still grab t-shirts, mugs (travel & otherwise), and stickers over on the Redbubble site.

We'll be doing a live HFPod event on October 20 at Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery in Hampton, VA before the Phish show. Check out the event page on Facebook for details. It's coming up soon!

028 - Blues For The World Mix Sep 25, 2018

Show notes

No guest this week, fellow Dead Freaks. Just you and me and a the good old Grateful Dead. I've got a jam-packed mix for you that I think you're gonna enjoy. I put this together over ten years ago and it's high time you got a chance to wrap your head around it.

Last episode's guest, Jerry David DeCicca's new album comes out on Friday, 9/28 so head on over to his website, jerrydaviddecicca.com where you'll find tour dates and links to purchase his records. Please do check out what he has to offer.

Once again in this episode, I put in a word for the Love Hope Strength Foundation. They're doing great helping to expand the International Bone Marrow Registry. Their current fundraiser includes a giveaway for a trip to Las Vegas to meet and to see Ozzy Osbourne. For details on the contest, go to Omaze.com/ozzy and to learn more about how you can help the Love Hope Strength Foundation, check out lovehopestrength.org.

026 - Dennis McNally Aug 28, 2018

Show notes

Greetings, Dead Freaks! Here, in the waning days of Summer, we bring you a chat with Grateful Dead publicist, biographer, and author, Dennis McNally. We discussed his books, Desolate Angel (on Jack Kerouac and the Beats), A Long Strange Trip (on The Grateful Dead, of course), and On Highway 61: Music Race and the Evolution of Cultural Freedom. Dennis also tells us about his next project before we do what we always do and dig into his history with the Grateful Dead.

You can find out more about Dennis' writing on his website DennisMcNally.com.

After the interview we spin some serious Grateful Dead music that I hope you will enjoy. Full notes for this episode are at our blog!
