Neil Giraldo | Living a Life of Expression, Innovation, & Creativity Mar 07, 2022
    Show notes

Neil Giraldo was born in 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio. Immersed in the culture of his beloved Sicilian ancestry, his parents Anthony and Angela Giraldo instilled the love of music at a young age, giving Neil his first guitar at the age of six, with the hopes that he and his sister, Priscilla, who played the accordion, could entertain family and friends with songs from the old country after church on Sundays. As Neil got older, his mentor, Uncle Tim, introduced him to revolutionary bands like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and all the other great guitar-driven rock 'n' roll bands of the 1960s. Finding new and innovative ways to shadow path his way into songs, Neil developed a discipline early on of not just playing along to his favorite artists but creating different parts for himself within those tracks. At the same time, the budding guitar artist also became proficient on piano by continuously practicing along to Chuck Berry (Johnnie Johnson), Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis records. His interest in percussion instruments soon followed, practicing the drums to Simon & Garfunkel albums he explored how different rhythms could alter the complexion of songs. These practices and disciplines created the foundation for his future success as an innovative record producer and musician.

Giraldo began his professional career in 1978 as a key member of the Rick Derringer band after competing against 200 other guitarists for the position. It wasn't long before Rick discovered Giraldo's piano playing prowess and quickly put those skills to work in the studio for the recording Guitars and Women. In the spring of 1979, Mike Chapman introduced Giraldo to an up-and-coming singer named Pat Benatar who had recently signed to Chrysalis Records. While impressed with the young vocalist, Chapman felt she needed a musical partner who could facilitate the creation of a sound both identifiable and powerful. Over the years Neil has produced some of their biggest hits including "Love is a Battlefield" and "We Belong."

With a back catalog of more than 100 songs written and more than 45 million records sold, Giraldo has written, produced, arranged, and recorded for Pat Benatar, John Waite, Rick Springfield, Kenny Loggins, Steve Forbert, The Del Lords, Beth Hart, The Coors, and others, which include many Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning hits.

Today, Giraldo's career is as dynamic and diverse as ever. He is in the process of completing two books – one an autobiographical novel, one a motivational book on the psychology of creating. He is further expanding his Bel Chiasso entertainment company, which is developing a variety of television, film and Broadway theater projects.

On May 16th 2016 Neil founded Three Chord Bourbon to celebrate creativity, community, and tradition by bringing together the award-winning musician and producer's love of whiskey and music with his passion for conversations with family and friends. Inspired by the simplicity yet infinite expressions of the three chord progression — the foundation of the blues — Neil collaborated with master blender and distiller, Ari Sussman, to bring together notes of a variety of bourbons and create a distinctive taste in whiskey that balances simplicity and complexity in perfect harmony.

Neil has utilized this new platform to assist emerging musicians via Three Chord Musical Ambassador program. Learn more at ThreeChordBourbon.com

MicroDose of Candor | Revisiting a Conversation With Amy Edmonson Mar 04, 2022

The best leaders make it a point to create cultures in which everyone is empowered to speak openly and candidly. We need to have a mindset where everyone knows that its not their right to challenge each other - its their obligation.

In the Marine Corps is was called Speaking Truth to Power. All Marines, at every level are encouraged to speak out to leaders who are willing to listen.

As a professional aviator, the ability to speak openly without fear of reprisal or admonishment is an absolute requirement for safe and effective operations. There are many an accident that is directly connected with a pilot's inability or refusal to speak out with candor.

In this episode we also re-visit my April 2020 conversation with Amy Edmonson, Harvard Professor and author of The Fearless Organization, that drives home the power of being Respectfully Candid.

Micro Dose of Intuition Feb 11, 2022
    Show notes

Intuition in leadership and life is critical. It's a topic that is often overlooked and not easily understood. We don't give intuition the credit it's due. Yes, we must analyze our situation with our head. Yes, we must listen to our heart to be an empathetic and servant leader. But we must also listen to our gut and trust our "inner knowing" if we want to be effective in leadership. In this episode we explore the power of intuition and revisit Episode 462 with IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Kern Lima and why intution is a key towards her success. This episode is sponsored by MetPro.

Oliver Stone | Revisiting the JFK Assassination Jan 31, 2022
    Show notes

Oliver Stone has become known as a master of controversial subjects and a legendary film maker. His films are filled with a variety of film angles and styles, he pushes his actors to give Oscar-worthy performances, and despite any setbacks or critiques, his tenacious nature has always returned him back to success. He's a three-time Oscar winner, and although he has mostly been stung by critics of his films, he remains a well-known name today in the film industry. The films he directed have been nominated for 31 Academy Awards, including eight for acting, six for screen writing, and three for directing. There is no denying that Stone has cemented himself a position among the legends of Hollywood. Thirty years after acclaimed director Oliver Stone's first examination of JFK's assassination, Stone reassesses the horrific event that shaped a generation in his new documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass. Using newly declassified and reexamined footage, Stone presents a case that conspiracy theories about the president's death are actually "conspiracy facts."

Stuart Scheller | A Lesson in Moral Courage & Accountability Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller has served the US Marine Corps Infantry for 17 years. Scheller was relieved of his command for publicly demanding senior US military brass take "accountability" for overseeing the execution of the pullout from Afghanistan after 13 troops died in the suicide bombing of August 26, 2021.

An infantry officer with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Scheller crashed into the national dialogue following a now-viral Aug. 26 social media video of him speaking out in uniform. His demands for accountability from military and political leadership, both current and past, for the conduct of the war in Afghanistan eventually saw him jailed and court-martialed.
