403. Ken Susi (As I Lay Dying / Ex Unearth / Swivel) Jun 11, 2023

Show notes

Join Ken and I as we catch up from the last time he was on the podcast. We get into how he received death threats from his last appearance on this show. How scary it's become in this day and age where people can anonymously throw accusations out there that can put your career in jeopardy without any validity to those claims.

Ken opens up about how it's been joining As I Lay Dying, how quickly all the guys have gelled both onstage and off. How it was for Ken to start to step away from Unearth a band he started 20+ years ago, and how he found it to be to start anew with AILD, and finding his place in it.

We also get into Ken's tireless work ethic, not just as a musician, but in his work with Fishman and his reality business. Not having to do anythig solely for the paycheck, and how that has allowed him the freedom to pursue anything he's passionate about and more in this 2 hour chat.

400. Vin Rock (Naughty By Nature) May 21, 2023

Show notes

Episode 400 is here and it's with Vin Rock of the legendary, Grammy winning, Naughty By Nature!!

Vinnie joins me to discuss 30 years of 19NaughtyIII, what the album did for the group. We look back on the celebration of hip hop the Grammy's had aired the night before when we recorded this, and what it was like for the group to be one of the first awarded a Grammy for hip hop, and how they shouted out their producer, DJ Kay Gee, and called him a "super producer" before the phrase would really find its prominence decade or so later.

We also get into the groups iconic logo and branding, and how that set them apart from their peers, how ahead of the times they were creating a brand and how other companies wanted to use their success for their own profit. Vin also discusses the importance of knowing your worth, and sticking to your guns, and how he has navigated the ever changing music industry.

Vin also discusses his latest project, Next By Nature, a collaboration with Next, Dj Kay Gee, and himself and more in this chat with the iconic rapper.

399. Landon Tewers (The Plot In You) May 14, 2023

Show notes

Join Landon and I as we chat before a home state show here in Michigan. We get into the bands viral moment of "Feel Nothing" blowing up on Tik

Tok. How it has been for the band to have a single from a previous record react like that, and what it's like behind the scenes from the band, label, management side of things goes when a moment like this happens.

We also get into how Landon dealt with the pandemic, and how it really afford the band some much needed time off from everything. Landon discusses how close they were to calling it a day, what he learned about himself in that time, and how it has informed how he and the band proceed with things moving forward.

Landon talks about bringing back some older songs on this tour, and how it has been to go back and look at the bands previous output and compare the inspirations for those songs to where he is now. If there is a bit more freedom with youth when it comes to expressing yourself versus getting older and realizing the weight of what you say and other musical endeavors he'd like to branch out into and more in this quick chat with The Plot In You vocalist.

398. Jyrki 69 (The 69 Eyes) May 03, 2023

Show notes

Join Jyrki 69 and I as we dive right into discussing the bands latest album, Death Of Darkness, and how this feels like a bit of a reenergized version of the band firing on all cylinders. We also talk about how rare it is to be 3 decades into the bands career and how they've had no line up changes in that time, and how that has allowed the band to grow creatively over that time.

We also touch on how Jyrki's lyrics are possibly not given their due, given the fact that he's long been talking about social/political commentary albeit through a pop culture sense and if that bothers the singer. I also share with Jyrki how he and Ville Valo's solo record were the two records that reignited my being excited about listening to new music again, and how Death Of Darkness as an idea was something we both found our ways through.

397. Jeremy Schaeffer (Earth Groans) Apr 16, 2023

Show notes

Join Jeremy and I as we catch up with each other from the last time Jeremy was on the podcast almost 6 years ago. We get into what has changed with the band, and more specifically Jeremy in that time. From being just signed to Solid State Records and looking forward to touring more full time, to now where the band has release a full length and a new EP, and what lies ahead for the band. We discuss coming to the realization that something might be reaching its end, or at the very least that you've taken it as far as it can go, finding happiness in the journey while still being motivated to create something new. We also get into Jeremy's experience during the pandemic, which saw both of his career paths come to quick halt. How made him start doing vocal covers to showcase his influences as well as his producing talents. Getting more into Tik Tok and the growth he's seen from doing that. We also get into if Jeremy ever sees himself moving away from South Dakota, the pros and cons to living somewhere remote and we tackle the biggest question.....will he ever shave the mustache and how it's become such an identifying part of the band itself and more. 396. Chase Wilson (Ov Sulfur) Apr 09, 2023

Show notes

Join Chase and I as we get kinda heavy right away as I had been informed a few moments before that my grandfather had been admitted to the hospital and prognosis didn’t look good. Chase opens up about losing a family member recently. We talk about how death has allowed us to realize we need to get more out of our day to days lives as tomorrow is not promised. On a less somber note, we talk about the success of Ov Sulfur right out the gate, how that has been for him to get used to after playing in bands for awhile and not reaching this level of success. We discuss the hot topic currently in the world of touring, merch cuts, how being in a newer band some of these things impact how the band tours and decisions they make. We get into some Vegas talk and more with the OV Sulfur guitarist. Show notes

Join Kris and I as we start out talking about our preferred brands when it comes to technology. We dive into how Kris and his bandmates almost called it a day during the pandemic, but how Kris used the time off to get centered and coming back to the band with a renewed sense of purpose, which you can hear all throughout their newest album The Seventh Sun. We also talk about Kris being an empathic person, and how he feels that effects both of his professions in music and as a barber.
