Episode 558: Tron: Ares, A House of Dynamite, Kiss of the Spider Woman Oct 08, 2025
    Show notes

October 10 is such an insanely packed week that we wanted to review a few of the new releases a little early here at Breakfast All Day:

    • TRON: ARES: The third movie in the "Tron" series has a dopey script but extremely cool visual effects and a great soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails. See it on a giant screen and pretend you're watching a two-hour music video. Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Evan Peters star. In theaters this weekend.

    • A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE: Kathryn Bigelow is back with a sharp, tense tale about what happens when an unknown country launches a nuclear strike against the United States. Rebecca Ferguson, Anthony Ramos, Tracy Letts, Gabriel Basso and Jared Harris are among the incredible ensemble cast. This is one of the year's best. In theaters this weekend before streaming on Netflix Oct. 24.

    • KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN: This splashy movie musical from "Dreamgirls" director Bill Condon features dazzling production numbers, lush production values and great performances from Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna and Tonatiuh, who is going to be a star. In theaters this weekend.

Check back with us on Friday when we'll have reviews of "Roofman" and "Urchin" as well as Movie News LIVE! Join us at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific. Thanks for being here.

Episode 557: Good Boy, Play Dirty, Are We Good? reviews Oct 04, 2025
    Show notes

We'll spin around and wag our tails for a treat -- we're kinda shameless that way here at Breakfast All Day.

October begins with reviews of three very different films:

    • GOOD BOY, a lean and clever horror movie told from a dog's perspective. Indy, who's director and co-writer Ben Leonberg's own retriever, is actually the best boy. And in case you're worried: He's OK at the end. In theaters.
    • PLAY DIRTY, a listless action comedy from director and co-writer Shane Black, who's had a much better track record with this kind of movie in the past ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "The Nice Guys"). Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield lead an ensemble cast. Streaming on Prime Video, but you should avoid it.
    • ARE WE GOOD?, an intimate documentary that looks at the life and career of comedian and "WTF Podcast" host Marc Maron. In particular, it focuses on how he's working through grief after the death of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We liked this. In theaters.

Next week is nuts, with about eight movies coming out that have awards potential, or at least year-end buzz. So keep your ears open, and we'll help guide you through this busy time. Thanks for being here.

Episode 556: The Smashing Machine, One Battle After Another LIVE Spoiler Chat Oct 01, 2025
    Show notes

We've got a mid-week Breakfast All Day drop-in for you with exactly two items:

    • An early review of "The Smashing Machine," in which Dwayne Johnson transforms himself to play MMA fighter Mark Kerr. It's in theaters Friday.
    • A lengthy, LIVE spoiler chat about Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another," which we hosted on our YouTube channel.

See you Friday for the Marc Maron documentary "Are We Good?" our weekly news livestream at Noon Pacific, and much more. Enjoy!

Episode 555: Eleanor the Great, Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror, Movie News LIVE! Sep 26, 2025
    Show notes

We're wrapping up September with a quick and random episode of Breakfast All Day so we can get out to the theater and see our people in person!

Tonight's the night for our meet-and-greet at CinemaWest Beach Cities in El Segundo. We'll be at the lobby bar before the 6pm showing of "One Battle After Another." Come say hi around 530, grab a drink and a Pink's hot dog, then check out Paul Thomas Anderson's new epic on their Giant screen. Details and tickets are available here: https://web.cinemawest.com/films/One-Battle-After-Another/HO00000209

As for new reviews, we begin with "Eleanor the Great," Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut. June Squibb stars as 94-year-old woman who moves back to New York after the loss of her best friend and tells a big lie that spirals out of control. This movie is a mess tonally, but Squibb is always a delight. In theaters.

Next up is "Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror." This is a documentary about "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," the ultimate cult movie, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary today. Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O'Brien and many more share their memories of this groundbreaking, enduring film, which is still playing in midnight showings decades later. In theaters.

Finally, it's Movie News LIVE! Jimmy Kimmel's back, trailers for "The Mandalorian and Grogu" and "The Bride," the "Weapons" spin-off movie about Aunt Gladys and much more. Join us here every Friday at Noon Pacific. We love seeing you!

Episode 554: HIM, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Movie News LIVE! Sep 20, 2025
    Show notes

September winds down in unspectacular fashion here at Breakfast All Day with two new movies you're welcome to avoid.

We begin with "HIM," a horror film set in the world of pro football. Lots of style, cool production design and some striking cinematography, but it becomes overwhelming and -- eventually -- just plain silly. Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers and Julia Fox star. In theaters.

Then we discuss "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey," which isn't much better. Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie meet cute at a wedding, then get stuck on a magical realist road trip in a rented Saturn where they must return to pivotal moments from their pasts. Kogonada ("Columbus," "After Yang") directed, and we usually love him, but this is cloying and hollow. In theaters.

Finally, we have a lengthy Movie News LIVE! for you. We spent quite a bit of time on Jimmy Kimmel and Robert Redford, but we also discussed the new Taylor Swift movie and the trailer for "Anaconda." Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. Thanks for being here!

    • Join us before a showing of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER on opening weekend. We'll be at CinemaWest Beach Cities before the 6pm showing on Friday, Sept. 26. Say hello to us in the lobby bar starting around 530pm, then head into the theater and see the movie on their GIANT screen. Find out more and get tickets here: https://web.cinemawest.com/films/One-Battle-After-Another/HO00000209

Episode 553: One Battle After Another (NO Spoilers!), Remembering Robert Redford, Megadoc, Chain Reactions, The Baltimorons Sep 17, 2025
    Show notes

It's a jam-packed, mid-week episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast.

We begin with a super-early, spoiler-free review of "One Battle After Another." Paul Thomas Anderson's latest epic doesn't come out until Sept. 26, but we couldn't wait to talk about it. We'll do a spoiler-free LIVE YouTube chat at Noon Pacific on Tuesday, Sept. 30, so mark your calendars for that.

And! Join us before a showing of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER on opening weekend.

Also in this episode, we have reviews of two movies about movies: the documentaries "Megadoc" (about Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis") and "Chain Reactions" (about Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre").

We catch up with the charming indie rom-com "The Baltimorons," about an unlikely relationship that develops on Christmas Eve.

And we spend some time remembering Robert Redford, who died this week at his Utah home at 89. Words like "legend" and "icon" don't feel like enough in describing Redford's life and career. He was THE movie star. We'll honor him with our Off the Menu poll on our Patreon next month, so keep an eye out for that.

    Thanks for being here!

Episode 552: The Long Walk, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Movie News LIVE! Sep 13, 2025
    Show notes

We're here to provide a little distraction -- and a positive online community during these weird times -- with the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast.

Our first movie isn't exactly escapist fun, though: "The Long Walk," which is one of the better Stephen King adaptations. It's beautifully written and acted but also harrowing to watch, especially now. This may not be the best week to see people getting shot in the head, but this movie is really good otherwise. In theaters.

Next up, it's "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," the painfully unfunny sequel to the 1984 comedy classic "This Is Spinal Tap." It would be impossible to match the brilliance of a movie that invented an entire genre, but this one really doesn't. Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer are all back, along with some major celebrity cameos. In theaters.

If you're looking for elegant pleasures, we have "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale." Everyone's lives are in flux in 1930s England, but they look great doing it. And despite their financial woes, they find time to get gussied up for the horse races at Ascot. This tidies up all the stories in satisfying fashion. In theaters.

Finally, a lengthy Movie News LIVE!: Early reactions to "One Battle After Another," Emmy Awards on Sunday, "Big Little Lies" season 3 and much more. We tried to keep the politics to a minimum but dipped into some entertainment-adjacent items toward the end. Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. Thanks for all you do for our community!

Episode 551: The History of Sound, Twinless (NO Spoilers!) Sep 09, 2025
    Show notes

It's Arthouse Tuesday! Our favorite day of the week. (Although Fridays are pretty cool, too.)

Here's what we have for you on this quick, mid-week pop-in:

    • "The History of Sound," a queer romance set during World War I. Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor co-star as students at a Boston music conservatory who travel New England recording folk songs and falling in love. It's in theaters this weekend, so this is an early review.
    • "Twinless." which we try very hard not to spoil. Writer/director/co-star James Sweeney and Dylan O'Brien play strangers who meet at a support group for twins who've lost a sibling. The less you know about this movie, the better, but trust us when we say that you should see it.

Keep an eye (and an ear) out for Friday's episode, when we'll talk about "The Long Walk," "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," and "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale." Plus Movie News LIVE! See you then.

Episode 550: The Conjuring: Last Rites, Highest 2 Lowest, High and Low (1963), Movie News LIVE! Sep 06, 2025
    Show notes

September's going to be a busy month, we can tell already. We took a week off at the end of the summer but we're coming in hot to start the fall here at Breakfast All Day.

Supposedly "The Conjuring: Last Rites" is the final film in the franchise -- it says so right there in the title! -- but nothing ever really ends. This is once again the scariest case Ed and Lorraine Warren have ever taken, something to do with a haunted mirror. You've seen it all before, but Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are committed to the bit as always. In theaters.

Then we review both Spike Lee's "Highest 2 Lowest" and Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low," the 1963 film that inspired it. The new one stars Denzel Washington as a music industry titan fighting a kidnapping scheme; Toshiro Mifune played a shoe company executive in the original. They have similar bones but are extremely different in how they tell their stories. The Kurosawa film is one of his greats, and Lee's latest is his most purely entertaining movie in a while. (At least one of us thought so.) You can catch "Highest 2 Lowest" on Apple TV+, while "High and Low" is on HBO Max and The Criterion Channel.

Finally, we did a lengthy Movie News LIVE! Lots to talk about with fall festival season beginning, plus new trailers including "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," and the gross use of AI to complete Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific at our YouTube channel.

    Thanks for being here!

Episode 549: Caught Stealing, The Roses, Lurker Sep 03, 2025
    Show notes

We're back from the Labor Day holiday and ready to take on the fall movie season here at Breakfast All Day. But first, we're playing a little catch-up with some end-of-summer movies you should know about.

First, it's "Caught Stealing," the latest from Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan," "Requiem for a Dream," "mother!") and perhaps his most accessible film yet. Austin Butler stars as a bartender who gets caught up in in a criminal scheme in late-'90s New York. It's a lark with a dark heart. Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Vincent D'Onofrio and Liev Schreiber co-star. In theaters.

Next up is another star-studded movie, "The Roses." You may remember this when it came out in 1989 and was called "The War of the Roses" starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. This time, Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch play a wealthy and successful couple whose marriage is about to collapse under the weight of their ambition and resentment. Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon and Allison Janney co-star. In theaters.

Finally, you should definitely check out "Lurker," an indie thriller that expertly explores modern celebrity. Alex Russell ("The Bear," "Beef") makes his writing-directing debut with this story of an up-and-coming pop star (Archie Madekwe) and the canny fan (Théodore Pellerin) who insinuates himself into his inner circle. Lots of twists and deeply uncomfortable moments. In theaters.
