Episode 618: I Want Your Sex, Sheep in the Box, Movie News LIVE! Aug 01, 2026
    Show notes

We already reviewed the big movie of the week, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," earlier this week. But other movies exist in the world, so you get Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday.

Here's what we discussed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day:

    • I WANT YOUR SEX. Between this and the Wham! in China documentary, it's an accidental George Michael theme week, but we're not complaining. Olivia Wilde stars as a caustic and quick-witted dom to Cooper Hoffman's eager and besotted sub. The latest from veteran queer filmmaker Gregg Araki takes place in the heightened world of LA's contemporary art scene. This movie is a hoot. In theaters.

    • SHEEP IN THE BOX. A rare miss from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His film explores some familiar themes about creating a family in unexpected ways, but does so in languid, superficial fashion. A couple in the near future brings a synthetic boy into their home to replace the 7-year-old son they lost. Sounds like a moving premise, but this never grabbed us. In theaters.

    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Another extra-long segment because there was so much to discuss, including the huge Thursday box office for "Spider-Man," news out of Comic-Con, Disney canceling "Wonder Man," and the tragic death os Glen Hansard. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Thanks for starting your weekend with us!

Episode 617: Spider-Man: Brand New Day (NO Spoilers!), WHAM! 10 Days in China Jul 29, 2026
    Show notes

We're swinging by with a quick, mid-week drop at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode:

    • SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY. Tom Holland thwips his way across New York City once again as Peter Parker. But in between fighting crime and taking on a powerful new foe, he also must feel his feelings about being isolated from Ned and MJ. Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Liza Colón-Zayas and Sadie Sink co-star. This is an early, non-spoiler review, but join us Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Noon Pacific for a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel.

    • WHAM! 10 DAYS IN CHINA. If you're a child of the '80s and you love Wham! like we do, you'll love this. The documentary features never-before-seen footage of the British pop duo's groundbreaking performances in China. It's only in theaters for one night -- and that happens to be tonight -- but hopefully it'll come to streaming soon. Find out more here.

Thanks for being here! See you Friday for more reviews and Movie News LIVE!

Episode 616: Her Private Hell, Hadestown: The Musical, Movie News LIVE! Jul 25, 2026
    Show notes

It's an accidental theme week here at Breakfast All Day. We love when those happen. We're in a bit of a lull for new movies between "The Odyseey" last week and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" next week, but here's what we reviewed for you.

    • HER PRIVATE HELL. The first film in a decade from Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "The Neon Demon") has lavish style but it's totally inscrutable. Go for the clothes and the production design if you must see it. Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton and Havana Rose Liu star. In theaters.

    • HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL. This is an extraordinary live capture of AnaÏs Mitchell's Tony-winning musical. All the stars from the original Broadway run are here for this London West End performance. If you've seen "Hadestown," you'll want to see it again in this thrilling, intimate form. And if you've never seen it, prepare to be dazzled. In theaters for only about a week. Find out more and get tickets here.

    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This went extra long because there was so much to discuss, including the Venice and Toronto film festival lineups, Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge, the "Avengers: Doomsday" trailer, Elon Musk's AI version of "The Odyssey," the Cinerama Dome returning and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Thanks for starting your weekend with us! Look for our "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" out of the theater reaction on Monday night.

Episode 615: The Odyssey, Heartstopper Forever, Movie News LIVE! Jul 17, 2026
    Show notes

The biggest movie of the year is here, and we're here for all of it on Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode.

    • THE ODYSSEY. You thought your commute home was brutal. Matt Damon endures an array of mythological monsters and obstacles in Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of the ancient Greek classic. Co-starring Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo and Lupita Nyong'o. In theaters everywhere.

    • HEARTSTOPPER FOREVER. Rather than produce a fourth season, the folks behind the "Heartstopper" queer romance series opted for a two-hour feature film. Can Nick and Charlie make it last? Will Isaac run out of books to read? Watch and find out. Streaming now on Netflix.

    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Alonso is out of town, so Christy did this one solo. We'd never bail on you entirely during "Odyssey" week. Among the other topics we discussed were trailers for the new Tom Cruise movie "Digger" and Tony Gilroy's "Behemoth!", Alex Gibney's Elon Musk doc, Danny Boyle's Rupert Murdoch biopic, plus we remember Sam Neill, who died this week at 78. Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific.

Episode 614: Moana (2026), The Man Who Would Be King: Was It Great or Were You 8?, Movie News LIVE! Jul 11, 2026
    Show notes

Everything old is new again this week on Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed in our latest episode:

    • MOANA (2026). If you've seen "Moana" (2016), you've seen "Moana." Disney's going back to the animation well one more time for their latest live-action remake. The songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda are the stars again, but newcomer Catherine Laga'aia has an appealing presence in the title role. Dwayne Johnson is back as the demigod Maui (of course). In theaters.
    • THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING: WAS IT GREAT OR WERE YOU 8?. This is our favorite game to play. This time, Alonso chose a film from his childhood to see how it holds up today. Sean Connery and Michael Caine co-star in this 1975 action epic from legendary director John Huston. If you've seen it, is it still great? Rentable and streaming in a variety of places.
    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Lots to talk about always including early reactions to Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" (we're seeing it Monday morning and will have an out-of-the-theater reaction), Emmy nominations, the new "Dune: Part Three" trailer, Louise Lasser and more. Join us Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Episode 613: Enola Holmes 3 review, Movie News LIVE! Jul 04, 2026
    Show notes

Happy Fourth of July, and Happy 250th, if you're in the United States. We're here to keep you company if you're traveling, heading to the beach or just staying indoors and enjoying the AC because it's too damn hot outside. And if you're joining us from elsewhere in the world, we're delighted you're here.

Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast:

    • ENOLA HOLMES 3. It's not as fun as the first two "Enola Holmes" movies, but watching Millie Bobby Brown break the fourth wall and bust out her comic chops is always a joy. This time, the young detective is preparing to marry Tewkesbury on the island of Malta, but a kidnapping derails her plans. Henry Cavill, Louis Partridge and Helena Bonham Carter co-star. Streaming on Netflix.

    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! So much to talk about as always, including Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding, the "Backrooms" extended edition, the "Werwulf" trailer, Jon Erwin's use of AI in "Young Washington," Mel Brooks' 100th birthday and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Have a blast and stay safe this holiday weekend! Thanks for sharing some of it with us.

Episode 612: Minions & Monsters, Young Washington reviews Jul 01, 2026
    Show notes

Wow, it's July! We have a quick little episode to kick off the month and the second half of the year. Here's what we reviewed on the latest Breakfast All Day podcast:

    • MINIONS & MONSTERS. The third Minion movie and the seventh film in the "Despicable Me" franchise is surprisingly hilarious, as those tiny, yellow chaos agents storm Hollywood and invent cinema as we know it. Lots of classic movie references for the adults in the audience and madcap hilarity for everyone, regardless of age. Allison Janney, Trey Parker, Christoph Waltz and Jesse Eisenberg are among the voice cast. In theaters everywhere now.
    • YOUNG WASHINGTON. Before he was the first president of the United States, George Washington was a scrappy upstart with ambitions and mistakes to make. That's the point of this Angel Studios take on the founding father, set in 1755 Virginia. Starring William Franklyn-Miller, Kelsey Grammer, Ben Kingsley and Mary-Louise Parker. Coming soon to a middle school social studies classroom near you, but playing in theaters starting July 3.

We'll be back on Friday with a review of "Enola Holmes 3," plus movie news. See you then, and thanks for sharing some of your summer with us.

Episode 611: Supergirl, Jackass: Best and Last, Movie News LIVE! Jun 27, 2026
    Show notes

Supergirl may not save humanity, but we're always here for you at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed in our latest episode:

    • SUPERGIRL. It's getting mostly mixed-negative reviews, and we're on the lower end of that scale. We enjoyed Milly Alcock as the aggressively blasé Kara Zor-El, and we really liked Jason Momoa as the imposing Lobo, but for the most part this "Superman" follow-up is a mess. Matthias Schoenaerts and Eve Ridley co-star. In theaters.
    • JACKASS: BEST AND LAST. After more than a quarter century, Johnny Knoxville and his rowdy, masochistic friends can still make you squirm and howl with laughter at their elaborate stunts. But this final "Jackass" movie is also surprisingly poignant. Kids, don't try this at home. In theaters.
    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to discuss, including "The Bear," "The Odyssey," Eddie Murphy's "Donkey" movie, Ken Russell's "The Devils," the death of music mogul Clive Davis and more. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Thanks for starting your weekend with us!

Episode 610: The Invite review, Best Movies of 2026 So Far Jun 24, 2026
    Show notes

Come on over for some charcuterie and film criticism on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day.

We have an early review of "The Invite," starring Olivia Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton. They play neighboring couples in a San Francisco apartment building who get together for a hilarious and exquisitely awkward dinner party. Wilde directs from a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, based on the Spanish film "The People Upstairs." Opening in New York and Los Angeles June 26 before expanding nationwide in upcoming weeks.

Then, we thought we'd take a moment at the halfway point of the year to highlight our favorite movies so far. We have a little bit of overlap but also some very different titles, including a couple of movies Alonso has seen that we haven't even reviewed yet. What would you put on your list? Let us know!

Check back with us on Friday for reviews of "Supergirl" and "Jackass: Best and Last," plus Movie News LIVE!

Episode 609: The Death of Robin Hood, Leviticus, Movie News LIVE! Jun 20, 2026
    Show notes

We already reviewed the big movie of the week -- that would be "Toy Story 5" -- so we wanted to tell you about a couple of cool, new indies on this Friday edition of Breakfast All Day:

    • THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD. Hugh Jackman stars in this darkly violent version of the Robin Hood legend. Specifically, he wants no part of it, and would rather live out his final days in peace. Michael Sarnoski's film is beautiful but brutal. Co-starring Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård and Murray Bartlett. In theaters.

    • LEVITICUS. Two young men (Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen) fall in love in a decaying Australian mill town. Religious leaders force them into a conversion therapy that makes them fear an enigmatic, threatening version of each other. Writer-director Adrian Chiarella executes this inspired horror concept extremely well in his feature filmmaking debut. In theaters.

    • MOVIE NEWS LIVE! This went extra long because there was so much to talk about, including the "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" trailer, Amazon dropping Luca Guadagnino's Sam Altman movie, Fox buying Roku, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at Sphere Las Vegas, and Ben Stiller's New York Knicks documentary. Join us on Fridays at Noon Pacific.

Thanks for starting your weekend with us!
