It's a libertarian fantasy — a shopping mall where you can purchase anything you want. Drugs, guns, and even nuclear weapons are available to the responsible, self-determined buyer. Welcome to the world of ALONGSIDE NIGHT, a secular and decidedly PG-13 libertarian-interest film co-starring and co-produced by Christian legend Kevin Sorbo and his wife, Sam Sorbo. Kevin plays infamous economist Dr. Martin Vreeland, whose ideas are deemed threatening by the U.S. government, but the real star of the movie is his character's 16-year-old son, Elliot Vreeland (played by Christian Kramme.) Elliot has a precocious intellect and staunch right-wing economic views, so naturally women find him extremely sexy, and he carries himself with a Bond-like confidence. But can even a wunderkind such as he navigate an increasingly dangerous world, where gold is banned and armed FEMA soldiers are eager to re-educate him in a prison at the Al Gore Atmospheric Carbon Reduction Facility? It's a thrilling adventure movie featuring some of the most unsympathetic characters in cinematic history, with bizarrely grandiose DIY filmmaking techniques that make for an endlessly compelling watch. We love this film and have been waiting for years for the right time to discuss it on the pod.

Creed of Gold (2014) Sep 04, 2022

Show notes

Finally! A Christian feature that dares to ask the question — who funded the Bolsheviks? CREED OF GOLD is the rare type of movie that is both distinctly faith-based yet primarily focuses on economic concepts. If you've ever found yourself saying, "I'm enjoying this teen comedy, but I wish the protagonists spoke at length about how the Federal Reserve is a marvel of fiscal engineering that has created wealth and stability for our nation," then have we got the film for you. Protagonist Adam Smith (yes, named for Adam Smith) is a second-generation Russian immigrant who came of age in "the inner city" yet finds himself as a scholarship student at the prestigious Havenhurst University. He's randomly assigned to write a term paper with the rich and privileged Kirsten Stanford, but their assignment turns dangerous when their research begins to uncover dark secrets of corruption at the very heart of the U.S. government. They conclude that a few bad political actors have manipulated policy to suit their own greed. Who knew? At its heart, CREED OF GOLD is a thrilling celebration of universal morality, the triumph of capitalism, and how the government would be doing a swell job if everyone just followed the rules.

Gramps Goes to College (2014) TEASER Aug 28, 2022

One of the most insane films we've ever watched is this deceptively unassuming-looking flick that actually contains one of the wildest ego trips ever performed in front of the camera. GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE is the story of Ty Bounds (Donald James Parker), a man in his sixties who feels called by God to go back to college. His mission? Disrupt biology 101 class and teach his new 18-year-old friends that they must reject the teachings of evolution. Ty also decides to live in the freshmen dorms, sharing a room with a young Christian man named Brad, who Ty is constantly surveilling and humiliating by doing things such as giving him "the sex talk" at 2am when Brad tries to sneak in late after a party. But a simple school-days comedy this is not — it gets metaphysical when a girl is literally raised from the dead after dying on her feet during a binge drinking competition. Writer/star Donald James Parker sees himself as a cultural hero, and the Gramps character is dripping with the arrogance of a Christian who believes that he can fully know God. Great movie, highly recommended!

Chloe's Mountain (2021) feat. Hesse of Seeking Derangements Aug 21, 2022

Show notes

Chloe is a rebellious goth girl with an insurmountable "mountain" in her life she must climb. Faced with the sudden death of her parents, and the sudden death of her grandmother after that, she must choose between a sinful lifestyle making music with her nonbinary-coded rock band or to fulfill her grandmother's dying wish by attending Bible college. Fitting in at school isn't so easy, but Chloe soon finds a new best friend who shares her experiences — Nechelle, an immigrant from Sierra Leone who lost not only her biological parents, but ALSO her adoptive parents soon afterward. CHLOE'S MOUNTAIN has the distinction of being the Christian film we've seen with the most on or off-screen combined deaths, which is an achievement in a genre where sudden death is a frequently used trope that represents the unknowableness of God's plan. But will Chloe's college experience straighten her out, or will it expel her back into the world of smoking marijuana with tenderqueers? Hesse, co-host of the Seeking Derangements podcast, immerses herself in Chloe's world with us, and reveals her picks for the greatest Catholic films of all time. Meanwhile, Scott shocks Ash by sharing a long-held spiritual secret.

Voodoo Academy (2000) feat. Trans Regret Snoopy Aug 07, 2022

Show notes

Six strapping young male virgins enroll in a mysterious, exclusive Bible college led by the intimidating Rev. Carmichael. His sect, the "Neurocystic Christianity Church", preaches that advanced technology will bring the human race closer to God consciousness. His pièce de résistance is an electromagnetic confessional that doesn't just forgive sins — it harvests soul energy for an insidious purpose. It's a very ambitious exposition considering most of the film is just long shots of the boys writhing around in matching white designer underwear. This cinematic vision could only come from the mind of one man — director David DeCoteau, who has 177 directing credits to his name in genres such as gay softcore porn, straight softcore porn, kids' movies, and Lifetime movies. The range! Here to help us try to make sense of the theological backbone of Neurocystic Christianity is none other than Trans Regret Snoopy, a regularly appearing guest of ours who really knows her scripture and usually does not go out of her way to watch smut.

A Man Called Jon (2015) TEASER Jul 31, 2022

Jon is a pastor whose spiritual outbursts during church, such as shouting and running around the aisles, have made him the outcast of his congregation. After mass complaints, he is reassigned to shepherd a new flock. But imagine Jon's surprise when he (a white man) gets to his new assignment only to learn he'll be leading a historically black church. Members of his new congregation are either bemused or outright concerned by the cultural difference, but Jon quickly earns their trust through his open displays of spiritual ecstasy, which allow him to fit right in to a community where "shoutin'" is the norm when the spirit moves you. What follows is a fascinating and honestly quite wholesome story about culture shock that turns into mutual cultural appreciation. Of course we went into it with the worst of expectations for how this type of story would be handled, given the usual tenor of the mostly white and conservative films that tend to find us in our quest to watch every Christian film ever made. The perspective of black filmmakers and actors lent depth and sincerity to this story that could have gone very badly in the wrong hands. It was still pretty hilarious that Jon's original church basically kicked him out for being "too black" for them. However, sometimes a fun fish-out-of-water story can just be a charming and silly film without having to ruin it by overthinking.

Christmas Zombies (2020) Jul 24, 2022

Show notes

Merry Christmas in July! There's a war on Christmas in this country. The two sides? Santa vs. the undead. Our favorite homeschool family The Wrights simply cannot stop churning out hits. They made 12 films in 2020 alone, so obviously we've barely scratched the surface, despite watching HALLOWEEN CANDYMARE on this podcast just two weeks ago. CHRISTMAS ZOMBIES is a zany action comedy featuring ambitious green screen editing and multiple original rap songs. The Wrights are serious about their Christian message — despite a plot focusing on Santa, elves, and zombies, they make several attempts to remind us that Jesus is the reason for the season. Ash and Scott use the opportunity of this discussion to dig into the ethos of DIY cinema and to defend the Wrights AT ALL COSTS against their nasty 1-star letterboxd reviewers. Names for the naughty list, we're sure!

Resurrection (1999) TEASER Jul 17, 2022

This Bible fanfiction film borrows elements from police procedurals and film noir in the way it depicts Roman centurions in Bible times as fast talking cops. Claudius was assigned to guard Jesus's crucifixion and then later his tomb, but what should have been an easy assignment turns bizarre when he sees a bright flash of light and awakens to find the tomb is empty. His superiors at the centurion academy, and the high priests, want to silence him from revealing evidence that Jesus could really be the Messiah. Christian filmmakers are obsessed with finding novel ways to reframe stories we've heard a million times — RESURRECTION is genuinely one of the better and sillier examples of this type of story in the way the centurions are supposed to mirror police media tropes of today. The Boys enjoy a loose and comfy bonus episode where our ideas for centurion adaptations of modern cop movies takes us down a million stupid rabbit holes.

Halloween Candymare (2019) Jul 10, 2022

Show notes

Happy Halloween in July! We've chosen to abstain from celebrating Halloween due to the fact that it was invented by witches to talk to the dead. Still, we have a job to do. Inspiring us to remain true to our convictions regarding the shadow realm is our favorite homeschool family, the Wrights. Led by parents Ashley Hays Wright and David Owen Wright, the Wrights and their three daughters function as an accomplished low budget Christian film production company. From what we can assume about them based on the details we learn from their films and social media, the Wrights homeschool their daughters, and use this instructional time to work together to create family friendly films with a uniquely Christian message. The Wrights stand out within the Christian film scene for their apparent love of horror — creepy themes such as ghosts or bigfoot seem to be a common theme throughout their body of work. The involvement of their young daughters also makes the Wright films very unique. The Wright sisters' childlike sense of storytelling creates genuinely surprising and delightful moments. David Lynch famously invokes Transcendental Meditation to dive deep within his subconscious to invoke the signs and symbols that make his films powerful — the Wright sisters are inherently able to do this via their precociously limitless imaginations. Making the godly choice to boycott Halloween candy has never seemed so fun!

All For Liberty (2009) TEASER Jul 03, 2022

Happy 4th of July to all with fear of God in their hearts and red blood pumping through their veins. Ash and Julian celebrate by taking in a Revolutionary War era historical drama that reinforces the popular Christian cultural message that America is a country explicitly founded on Christian principles. The costuming in ALL FOR LIBERTY is genuinely impressive — the cast is clearly plucked from a historical reenactment troupe, and it's pretty amazing to see a low budget film with such a huge cast, all of whom are wearing expensive, period accurate clothing. The film is based on a true story of Swiss-German colonist Henry Felder, who was instrumental to fighting for independence in the colony of South Carolina. Seeing the action unfold, one cannot help but feel that God dealt America a major W in 1776. Even though we've been taking L's ever since, we're still #1.
