Billy Joel Drummer Liberty DeVitto ("LIBERTY: Life, Billy, and the Pursuit of Happiness) [Episode 149] Aug 24, 2023
    Show notes

Legendary Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto is this episode’s guest. In 2020 he wrote his memoir titled Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness. We get into Liberty’s 30 year career with Billy Joel and the stories behind the endless stream of hits from Billy.
Liberty’s grooves are heard on 13 platinum Billy Joel albums that have sold over 150 million copies. He wrote and performed the drum parts on 22 of Billy’s 23 top-40 hits and all six Grammy-award winning recordings. In 2006, after 30 years as Billy’s drummer, he was let go from the band’s tour, ending the longest running tenure in Billy’s band beginning with the 1976 album Turnstiles. There was an eventual lawsuit over royalty payments. They eventually settled out of court and have since reconciled and reclaimed their friendship. Billy would write the forward to Liberty’s book. Liberty talks about that, how he pulled himself out of the depression that followed and what he’s up to now.

"The Jive 95: An Oral History of America’s Greatest Underground Rock Radio Station, KSAN San Francisco"/Hank Rosenfeld [Episode 147] Aug 09, 2023
    Show notes

Hank Rosenfeld's book The Jive 95: An Oral History of America’s Greatest Underground Rock Radio Station, KSAN San Francisco is an oral history of KSAN in San Francisco, America’s first hippie underground FM station. Rock gods, political stars, and literary celebrities, including Jerry Garcia, Ken Kesey, Sly Stone, and John Lennon were all interviewed by founder Tom Donahue and his cohorts, whose listeners “tuned in and turned on” to bands like Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, Hot Tuna, The Beatles and Santana, among others. Hank Rosenfeld was there during those final years writing, producing, and announcing. He's on the podcast to talk about the station known as "Jive 95", and how it went from a liberating voice to a corporate cliché. Along the way, you’ll hear audio from KSAN including interviews with Jerry Garcia and John Lennon, protest announcements, and station IDs.

"Touring and Mental Health: The Music Industry Manual"/Tamsin Embleton [Episode 145] Jul 27, 2023
    Show notes

Tamsin Embleton is the author and editor of the book Touring and Mental Health: The Music Industry Manual. This book is a must-have for anyone who works in or around the live music business. It’s also a fascinating read for those who want to know what life really is like on the road. It’s not all glamorous. The grueling life on the road can take its toll. Often times musicians find themselves without the knowledge to handle the physical and psychological stresses that can mount over time.
This book offers an in-depth insight into how to manage all of it. Written by experienced healthcare and performance experts, it gives real-life advice, the latest research, and helpful tactics for addressing mental health, performance anxiety, addiction, relationships, physical well-being, diversity, and more. Adding their personal experiences to the book are musicians including Nile Rodgers and Justin Hawkins along with prominent touring personnel.
Touring and Mental Health is designed to be read on the road. Pick it up, pick a section, and put it down after, or read it at length. When you’re done, you’ll want to pass it around the tour bus. I’m really looking forward to talking to Tamsin about this book, how it all came about, and how it was all put together.
