Talking 50 Years Of KISS with Author Martin Popoff [Episode 162] Nov 01, 2023
    Show notes

KISS fans, there’s a brand-new book out called KISS @ 50, and this is one you will want to get!
Part of a phenomenal @50 series from Motorbooks, this is a trip through 50 years of “The Hottest Band In The World”. It’s beautifully packaged and produced in a hardcover format, with stunning photos of the band on and off stage, much of them never before published. There are images of memorabilia, including gig posters, 7-inch picture sleeves, ticket stubs, and more. If there was ever a book that deserves something this visually stunning, it’s KISS.
To add to the experience is veteran author Martin Popoff, who pays tribute to the band by curating and examining the 50 most significant milestones. He covers all things KISS, starting with the band’s formation in the early 70s, to their meteoric rise to fame by the end of the decade, to the departure of original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, to the roller coaster ride of the 80s, the massively successful 90s reunion of the original four, right through to the band’s current “End Of The Road” tour. Martin is here to talk about all of it!

The Life & Career Of Ronnie Lane (Small Faces, Faces) with Author Caroline Stafford [Episode 161] Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

Caroline Stafford is this episode’s guest. Caroline and David Stafford are authors of the brand-new book Anymore for Anymore: The Ronnie Lane Story. This is the biography of British singer/songwriter Ronnie Lane. In the 60s he co-founded Small Faces, who recorded several hit singles including “Itchycoo Park”, “Lazy Sunday”, “All or Nothing”, and “Tin Soldier”. But before long, singer Steve Marriott left the band to form Humble Pie, and the band would morph into Faces with Rod Stewart on lead vocals. That lineup would record future classics including “Stay With Me”, “I Know I’m Losing You”, and “Ooh La La”.
Anymore for Anymore charts the fortunes of Lane throughout that period, his later work with his band Slim Chance, and his unfortunate early death. Caroline is here to share her experience in writing the book and to talk about the career of the late great Ronnie Lane.

Kevin Armstrong's brand new book is called Absolute Beginner: Memoirs of the World's Best Least-Known Guitarist.
David Bowie said of Armstrong, “Kevin does what I pretend to do. He’s gone on to carve out a career as a producer, songwriter, and guitarist, performing live and recording with Thomas Dolby, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Paul McCartney, Roy Orbison, Morrissey, Sinead O’Connor, and many, many more. In Absolute Beginner, Armstrong takes us into the backstage world of the artists he’s worked with for over 40 years, what it’s like to have a prime seat at the high table of rock and roll for over 40 years, and what it takes to survive as a self-taught musician. "Body Count's Body Count (33 1/3)"/Ben Apatoff [Episode 157] Sep 29, 2023
    Show notes

Ben Apatoff's latest book Body Count’s Body Count - part of Bloomsbury Academic's 33 1/3 series - is an exploration and look back at the 1992 self-titled debut album from Ice T’s heavy metal band Body Count.
On Ice-T's 1991 classic O.G. Original Gangster, he introduced his all-Black hardcore band Body Count with lead guitarist Ernie C, bringing them on the first-ever Lollapalooza tour that summer. The next year, Body Count's self-titled debut album, rounded out by rhythm guitarist D-Roc the Executioner, bassist Mooseman, and drummer Beatmaster V, made them the most incendiary band in the world, confronting white supremacy and police brutality with pulverizing songs that shattered musical boundaries.
The album sparked nationwide protests and boycotts, including death threats, censure from the federal government, a spot on the FBI National Threat list, and a denunciation by the President of the United States. It was removed from stores and remains banned to this day, but decades later Body Count are performing to their biggest audiences and greatest acclaim. It’s one of the most remarkable comebacks in punk or metal history and we have author Ben Apatoff here to tell us all about it.

"Accidentally Like a Martyr: The Tortured Art of Warren Zevon"/James Campion [Episode 155] Sep 21, 2023
    Show notes

James Campion is a returning guest. He’s here to talk about the life and career of the late great Warren Zevon and his 2018 book Accidentally Like a Martyr: The Tortured Art of Warren Zevon.
It’s hard to believe but it’s been 20 years since Zevon passed away. For nearly four decades, spanning 12 studio albums and 32 singles, no artist expressed the duality of life, the light and dark, the ugliness and the beauty better than Warren Zevon. As Warren’s ex-wife told James in his book: “If you’re looking at the themes through his songs and what influenced them, at the heart of everything is that Warren was an artist…first.”
