41: The Homicide Prosecutor 📜 Apr 11, 2023

This week we welcome Matt Murphy, former homicide prosecutor. In 2002 Matt worked the homicide unit in Orange County, where he was assigned the cities of Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, and Irvine. Although murders in those cities are relatively rare, when they do happen, they tend to be twisted and newsworthy. Unlike many other agencies, Orange County homicide prosecutors attend the crime scenes, observe the autopsies, and their own filing decisions.

Matt is a sought-after speaker regarding complex murder trials, the tactics of cross examination, and effective closing arguments. Mr. Murphy has tried 0ver 200 criminal cases to verdict, including well over 100 jury trials.

Derrick is a decorated police sergeant from Rhode Island. Hired at only twenty years old, he was one of the youngest officers in the department’s history. Derrick worked in both the Patrol Division and the Detective Division. And was later assigned to the Special Investigations Unit as an undercover detective, where he had the opportunity to work with the ATF, DEA, FBI, and US Secret Service, resulting in numerous arrests and seizures.

This week we welcome Mark McClish. Mark is a retired Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal with 26 years of federal law enforcement experience. Mark spent nine years teaching interview techniques, and during this time, he conducted research on deceptive language. He would later develop processes that determine if a person is lying or telling the truth by analyzing their language, which he refers to as Statement Analysis.

Mark explains that while there are several ways to phrase a statement, people will always word it based on all their knowledge. Therefore, their statement may contain information they did not intend to share. Even though people may want to withhold information, they inevitably give more information than they realize.

This week we welcome Dr. Yvette Ghannam, and she is introducing us to the world of Microbial Forensics and biothreats.

Microbial forensics is the scientific discipline that analyzes evidence from a bioterrorism act, biocrime, hoax, or inadvertent microorganism/toxin release for attribution purposes. Microbial forensics combines the practices of epidemiology with the characterization of microbial and microbial-related evidence to assist in determining the specific source of the sample, as well as locations involved to determine the identity of the perpetrator(s) of an attack.

Microbial forensics is a layered field that includes several disciplines, from scientists, public health, law enforcement, the intelligence community, and policy and decision-makers. This interconnected system of diverse individuals helps protect us from naturally occurring disease outbreaks, like Monkey Pox, and acts of biological terrorism and bio crimes like Anthrax.

30: The FBI Forensic Artist ✍️ Jan 17, 2023

This week we welcome retired FBI forensic artist Lisa Bailey. Lisa is a highly skilled and professionally trained individual who works alongside crime-solving teams to create visual reconstructions of suspects and victims.

And today, she guides us through creating these visual aids – the method commonly referred to as “Facial approximation” attempts to recreate a likeness of a person’s face from the features and shape of their skull. These are usually done as a ‘last ditch’ effort to develop leads to a person’s identity after traditional methods like DNA or dental records haven’t provided an identification.

Lisa’s skillset makes her an instrumental asset in helping law enforcement agents connect the dots that ultimately lead to resolutions and convictions.

02: The Criminal Profiler & Linguist ✉️ Jun 27, 2022

This week we welcome James R. Fitzgerald, an American criminal profiler and forensic linguist. James is a retired FBI agent and is best known for his role in the UNABOM investigation, which resulted in the arrest and conviction of Ted Kaczynski. He designed and developed the FBI’s Communicated Threat Assessment Database (CTAD), a first-of-its-kind, fully searchable repository for all threatening and criminally oriented communications. And for his magnum opus, James authored three books in a memoir series, A Journey to the Center of the Mind.

01: The FBI Hostage Negotiator 📞 Jun 21, 2022

We welcome our very first guest, retired Chief, FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit, Gary Noesner.

Noesner worked for the FBI for more than 30 years as an investigator and instructor. As a hostage negotiator, he defused prison riots, government standoffs with right-wing militias, overseas kidnappings, and terrorist embassy takeovers. His career trajectory coincided with many significant events in the evolution of hostage negotiation at the FBI.

In 2010, Noesner released Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator, detailing his time working at the bureau. In the memoir, he wrote about the various standoffs he has been involved in, including Waco – his involvement as a negotiator in this crisis would change the FBI forever.

The art of stalling for time and the importance of voice, "I would ask, what did we say that made you come out? Because we try to learn from these cases. And the answer was always the same.
