Sovereign borrowing rates are surging around the world, with yields on 30-year US Treasuries rising to the highest since 2007. Plus, a selloff in chipmakers sent stocks lower, with the market also falling over inflation angst and rising government debt. Questions remain over what it all might mean for the Fed, and how economic pressures may sway President Trump's relationship with China ahead of a meeting with Xi Jinping next month.

Young Americans are reacting to economic pressure by building their own businesses and creating multiple income streams, with some investing in speculative investments or obsessively saving for retirement. Micah Stanley, a 24-year-old who never finished high school, has built a successful business with vending machines that dispense flavored vape pens and nicotine pouches, and now drives a Lamborghini and coaches others on how to start their own vending machine businesses. Gen Z is increasingly turning to entrepreneurship as a way to build wealth, with applications to form new businesses increasing by 66% in the past year, and many younger people saying they want to be their own boss and have multiple sources of income to achieve financial security.

President Donald Trump said he’s not interested in extending the expiring agreement with Iran. The price of Brent crude climbed above $90 a barrel as fresh concerns about an escalation of the war jolted global energy markets. Tensions in the Middle East were already on the rise over the weekend, with Israel’s military saying it killed senior Hezbollah commander Abu Hassan Alaa in southern Lebanon.

Hollywood Box Offices Are Back Aug 17, 2026
    Show notes

Hollywood has once again cheated death. The first seven-plus months of 2026 have revived the industry’s faith — not just in movies but in the act of going to the theater. Global ticket sales have increased 15% from a year earlier and are on pace for their best annual total since 2019. Five movies have eclipsed $1 billion, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day almost clearing that on opening weekend. With new installments of Dune and Avengers coming, that group could swell to seven — the second-most on record. Bloomberg News Media & Entertainment Managing Editor Lucas Shaw brings us the latest from Hollywood.

OpenAI’s Revenue Run Rate Tops $40 Billion Ahead of IPO Aug 14, 2026

Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF

OpenAI is on track to generate annualized revenue of more than $40 billion based on its current performance, according to people familiar with the matter, roughly doubling its run rate from the end of 2025 and bolstering the company’s plans for a Wall Street debut. The ChatGPT maker’s revenue has accelerated in recent months, driven in part by the growth of its AI coding software, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the information is not public. The gains also reflect momentum from subscription sales and its nascent advertising business. Its core consumer business continues to grow, too. OpenAI declined to comment.

    • Chris Kennedy, Economic Statecraft Lead for Bloomberg Economics

What Happened to Liberal Democracy?' Aug 14, 2026

Liberal democracy has failed its supporters on several key promises: when it stopped delivering shared prosperity; elevated a new college-educated elite; and drifted away from free expression and democratic self-government. In his new book, Nobel Laureate in Economics Daron Acemoglu argues that repairing liberal democracy is not the answer and offers a new framework: Working-Class Liberalism.

‘SaaSpocalypse’ Risk From AI Reaches Beyond Private Equity Aug 13, 2026
    Show notes

The people, companies and trends shaping the global economy. Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF
“SaaSpocalypse” was the buzzword in markets in the early months of the year, as new AI tools emerged to threaten the business models of software-as-a-service providers. A massive software selloff ensued in public markets and quickly spread to the world of private capital, where firms had spent billions upon billions of dollars stacking their portfolios with SaaS companies when interest rates were low.Suddenly those investments — built on the assumption that subscription revenue from software companies was ever-steady — looked like castles built on sand. fears that rapidly developing AI tools could replace existing tech products still have investors worried that a swathe of SaaS wagers could go sideways all at once. That could bring some nasty consequences for private equity firms, private credit lenders and also retail investors who have built exposure to software loans.
    On today's episode:

    • Paula Seligson, Bloomberg News Senior Reporter
    • Lipi Sternheim, CEO of REalloys
    • Rudina Seseri, Founder and Managing Partner of Glasswing Ventures

The people, companies and trends shaping the global economy. Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF.
The market and tech sector are looking more signs of monetization in the AI Revolution to drive tech stocks further. There will be a waiting period until Nvidia earnings at end of month, but chip activity out of Asia has accelerated over the last month. Overall, it’s crystal clear AI models and data infrastructure heading into next phase of the buildout which is very important for tech sector. And software companies now should start to better participate.

CPI Data Supports Bonds as Rate-Hike Bets Wane Aug 12, 2026
    Show notes

The people, companies and trends shaping the global economy. Watch Carol and Tim LIVE every day on YouTube: http://bit.ly/3vTiACF
In-line July CPI readings gave US equities and Treasuries room to rise as markets relaxed after the data, even as Middle East uncertainty keeps energy shock tail risks alive. Core CPI rose 0.2% on the month, moving the annual rate to 2.5%, matching the slowest annual pace since March 2021. Combined with last week’s weak jobs report that pushed September hike odds to about 40% from roughly 50% before Wednesday’s release.
