S3 E7: "I'm finished with the basic shit! What're the advanced financial steps that only rich people know?" Nov 19, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
What do you do when you finally have money for the first time?

I don't have consumer debt, I’ve paid off my student loans, I have an emergency fund, I’m maxing out my 401K... so now what? So many blogs on money stop at this point. But for real, what do "rich" people do with their money once the basics are covered?

Is it worth it to have a financial advisor? What percentage of your money should be kept in savings versus investments? What kind of investments are smart? How much should you be giving to nonprofits anyway? What else can you do with money other than save for retirementand invest in the stock market? Should I bethinking about rental properties, partially investing in a business, starting a business, or whatever? How does money make more money? What do you do when you've "made it"?

S3 E6: "I'm going through a long hiring process. Is it a red flag when an employer demands too many interviews?" Nov 11, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
My dream organization recently posted an open position. I knew I had to apply or I'd regret it and to my delight, I've now done a phone interview and a Zoom interview with the supervisor and President of the organization. I haven't heard back yet (it's only been 48 hours since the second interview), but I do know they are doing "multiple rounds" of interviews. So I have at least one more round before they make a decision. My problem is, if I do get to advance to the next interview, I'm not sure how to prepare and what else to say about myself. I'm used to a couple interviews and then a decision being made. What is this third interview all about?

S3 E5: “I really hate one of my tasks at work. Is there a way to escape it without quitting my job?” Nov 04, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
I'm a project manager for a dumpster fire of a project. Our contract is only $70K but they give our company $50M of work, so we're stuck with them. We are almost done with a "Phase 1" of our project and will soon be starting a "Phase 2." I legit don't have time with my other work to continue to be PM for this client, but I also just don't want to. Should I try to get out of being the PM and take whatever "hit" by "quitting" this client, or should I figure out how to stick it out (at the cost of my own mental health tbh)?

S3 E4: “The more money I save, the more I’m scared to lose it. Can I break the cycle of financial anxiety?” Oct 28, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
How do I stop feeling scared about money all the time? I'm objectively in a great financial situation. Despite that, every time I hit a new financial milestone, the goalpost just moves. It went from "I'll feel less worried about money with a 3-month emergency fund" to 6 months to 9 months to 12 months to 12 months assuming my expenses were higher than they currently are. I feel like a dragon compulsively trying to build a pile of gold that will never be enough. I never feel comfortable. I never feel secure. I'm hyper aware that one medical emergency could drain that emergency fund and put me right back where I started.

I know this is a privileged problem to have when so many people are in such bad financial situations, but it's a problem nonetheless. Since I've gotten my finances under control, I feel like I should be able to relax a little bit and leave things on autopilot and just... enjoy being alive and able to pay my rent? But instead I constantly feel anxious about money and I don't know how to break out of the cycle. Do you have any advice?

S3 E3: “I want to hire a financial advisor. Can they be trusted, or are they full of shit?” Oct 22, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
Do you have any advice for little boos about what to look for in a financial advisor, what to expect from one, when and if it makes sense to hire one? I’m in nursing school right now, but once I start my new career, is it worthwhile for me to see an advisor early on? Or is it too expensive to be worth it until you have at least a couple of stacks?

S3 E2: "I inherited money. Should I pay off debt, invest it, or blow it all on a car?" Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
I’m about to turn 18 and I’ve really appreciated seeing all your advice and resources. I was unlucky enough to have a family member die a few years back, and they left me a good amount of money, reassuring but not life-changing. I won’t have access to it until I’m 21, so this is by no means urgent, but with all my preparing for independence I’ve started thinking about what to do when I can access it. I’ve looked at a couple of options: buy a car, pay rent for a while, set it aside for emergency funds, start my retirement account, and maybe enjoy some of it then. If I am thrifty, I could maybe do multiple of these, but certainly not all. With the caveat that I’m not sure what my situation re: debt and financial security will be in 3 years, what would you recommend?

S3 E1: "I worry paying for my kids' college will spoil them. Don't student loans build character?" Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
My spouse and I are disagreeing about paying for college for our children, ages 4 and 1. I paid my own way through college and scraped by without loans through scholarships, choosing an affordable institution, working countless part-time jobs, and eating a lot of Kraft mac & cheese. My partner's college and housing expenses were paid for by his parents entirely. I know that I worked harder in college because I was paying for it, more than I would have if my parents were footing the bill. As such, I don't want to pay for my kids' expenses. My partner vehemently disagrees and says we would be cruel not to, especially since we're in a financial position to do so and still fully fund our retirement accounts and live a comfortable lifestyle. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

BONUS: "I can’t stand another day at my toxic workplace! Can I walk away without a new job lined up?" with Special Guest Diania Merriam Sep 01, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
"I work in an extremely toxic work environment. My boss is disrespectful, the whole company culture is abusive, and HR has been utterly dismissive of my issues. Walking in the door every morning feels like I’m entering Shawshank Penitentiary. I’m at the end of my rope and I know I have to leave to save myself. But I haven’t been able to land a new job yet. I have some savings, but I’m definitely not financially independent. I’d describe it as a small amount of ‘Fuck You Money,’ but not enough to live on for more than maybe 4-6 months. Should I quit? Even before I have a new job lined up?"

S2 E12: "I work for everything while my peers lead carefree lives. How do I control my raging resentment?" Sep 25, 2020
    Show notes

    Today's Question
How do you guys keep from getting discouraged?

One of my coworkers has a daughter my age, and he's always talking about how she's going to Germany again, or on a cruise, or she's got some big trip planned. It just really gets me down. I'm trying to save for school but if I save up for school then I won't have money to travel, and if I travel then I'll have to work minimum wage until I die.

I just hate feeling like I don't have a choice. But it's not like money just grows on trees...
