S4 E4: "I'm $100k in student loan debt and I think it should be forgiven. Does this make me an entitled asshole?" Dec 06, 2022
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
I have over 100k in student loan debt, and I keep meeting other people with student loan debt that wax poetic about how they feel like “their money belongs to the department of education” and “they owe it to the country to pay that money back” “I made a commitment, I don’t want loan forgiveness” and sentiments of that nature. Am I entitled or being an asshole by feeling like: I’m paying mine back because I have to, but I don’t see anything noble about it and if I could get out of it, I would. I’m paying what I have to pay to qualify for the PSLF program and I’m not paying a penny more. Do I need to adjust my attitude?

S4 E1 "Index funds include unethical companies. Can I still invest in them, or does that make me a monster?" Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
I take it you have investments in broad-based index funds (since it's the prudent thing to do)? At the same time, many of your posts have an anti-capitalist bent.
How do you address this conflict? Mind you, I'm not pointing fingers here, because I'm in much the same situation—private equity overlords booted me out of a job, but my own capitalistic investments allowed me to walk away without any pain, so I don't know how to feel about that. A pat answer is to point towards ethical-investment funds, but while I was reading up on it, I ran across an article that mentioned Wells Fargo as one of the companies listed on some ethical index because they aren't in the sin or war industries.
It turns out, as I scrolled back up, that the article was published before the Wells' fuck-the-customer practices came to light. I'd hardly call them an ethical company today, so these indexes aren't the solution that one would hope for.

BONUS: "What can I do to prepare for life in a post-Roe world?" May 10, 2022
    Show notes

In a good timeline, no one would have to prepare for a post-Roe world. Reproductive rights would be safely enshrined in our constitution, where they belong. Plus, ice cream would never melt.

Unfortunately, last week’s news made it abundantly clear that we’re in a crappy timeline. I accepted this news with horror, but not surprise. My faith in my elected representatives is as melty as a tub of Americone Dream left on the counter overnight.

But this isn’t the time to despair. It’s time to take action. Someone gave us the incredible gift of forewarning. We have two months to prepare. And there’s a lot of steps you can take to protect yourself and others in your community from the appalling consequences of forced childbirth.

Piggy and I hopped on an impromptu recording session to help our readers and listeners steel themselves for the fall of Roe v. Wade. And I’m thrilled to say we left our aimless thrashing and redundant moralizing on the cutting room floor! (Mostly.) What remained were actionable steps to help you prepare for a post-Roe world.

S3 E12: "I'm done with evil bosses and toxic workplaces. Can I stand up without being hammered down?" Dec 30, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
I have worked at a string of less than perfect places with toxic managers and owners. As a feisty Capricorn, all I want to do in my exit interview is to read the toxic motherfuckers I work under for filth. To say “You overwork us, lean on staff to the extreme, don’t respect our personal lives, force people to come in sick, and engage in serial wage theft!” But I live in a big small town where the owners of these places all know each other.
After some serious self-reflection, I can’t really say I do anything wrong at work other than being over qualified for the job, highly competent, and sticking up for myself so I don’t work for free or let people steal my wages. I know that bosses don’t like people who know their rights. But I swear I’m otherwise a good employee.
I’m finding myself in a smaller and smaller pool of places to seek employment because every time I try somewhere new it’s the same toxic bullshit. And I am SICK of pretending that everything is fine when I inevitably quit for better wages or because I’m sick of the manager’s BS.
TLDR; how the hell do you speak your mind to a toxic boss in a small town when you quit without royally fucking your future job prospects?

S3 E11: "People treat me like a child just because I'm femme. How do I command the respect I deserve?" Dec 23, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
How do I get people to take me seriously? I (24f) have a bubbly personality. I’m kind, I do well with children and babies, and I like to have fun. I throw themed parties for special occasions. I like to bake, I like to go dancing with my friends, and I dress in a very feminine way. I don’t want to sacrifice those parts of my personality because they make me who I am, but I have a hard time getting people to listen to me and respect my opinions. I’m about to graduate from law school and I’ve done some things that I am proud of! Like drafting COVID relief legislation, winning a case against a predatory lender as a student attorney, and implementing a federal grant for disabled workers. People still don’t think of me as a serious person, or as someone worthy of their trust, time, or attention. My own dad wouldn’t take my legal advice, and instead chose to pay $19.99 for an online consult with a sketchy website (which just confirmed what I already told him). There are examples of this from all parts of my life: my roommates don’t seem to respect my boundaries when I ask, guys don’t tend to see me as someone to settle down with, my mom constantly asks me if I’m “sure” about my life decisions. What am I missing? Is there something I’m doing wrong? How can I get people to respect me?

S3 E9: "My partner and I want kids in a few years. How do we financially prepare for a baby?" Dec 09, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
I am lucky to finally be getting paid what I'm worth. I’m making progress on basic financial goals like a robust emergency fund, funding my future retirement accounts, etc, so I’m ready to start focusing my energies on some more personal goals. My husband and I are thinking about expanding our family and trying to have kids. We are thrilled but nervous! Strangely, while parenting advice is all over the place, there's not a lot of advice I can find about financial milestones to meet before having kids. What advice do y'all have from a financial standpoint for folks looking to get ready to get ready to have kids?

S3 E8: "Should I get married for tax purposes? My boyfriend swears we'd save money, but I'm not so sure..." Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

    TODAY'S QUESTION:
For long term partners, what are the financial benefits of getting married? Why not just continue to live with my significant other and not legally tie the knot? My partner seems to think that our taxes would be way lower if we were to get married, but I'm not so sure. Yes, there is the added safety net of being on your partner's health insurance if you lose your job… but I'm not sure if that is enough to outweigh the financial consequences of divorce, etc. Along the same lines...is there a simple, cheap way to get a pre-nup for two people who both have similar assets/incomes but just want to be on the safe side?
